Spontaneous Registration of Sub-10 nm Features Based on Subzero Celsius Spin-Casting of Self-Assembling Building Blocks Directed by Chemically Encoded Surfaces

For low-cost and facile fabrication of innovative nanoscale devices with outstanding functionality and performance, it is critical to develop more practical patterning solutions that are applicable to a wide range of materials and feature sizes while minimizing detrimental effects by processing conditions. In this study, we report that area-selective sub-10 nm pattern formation can be realized by temperature-controlled spin-casting of block copolymers (BCPs) combined with submicron-scale-patterned chemical surfaces. Compared to conventional room-temperature spin-casting, the low temperature ( e.g., -5 °C) casting of the BCP solution on the patterned self-assembled monolayer achieved substantially improved area selectivity and uniformity, which can be explained by optimized solvent evaporation kinetics during the last stage of film formation. Moreover, the application of cold spin-casting can also provide high-yield in situ patterning of light-emitting CdSe/ZnS quantum dot thin films, indicating that this temperature-optimized spin-casting strategy would be highly effective for tailored patterning of diverse organic and hybrid materials in solution phase.

3D superstructures with an orthorhombic lattice assembled by colloidal PbS quantum dots

We report a new type of metamaterial comprising a highly ordered 3D network of 3-7 nm lead sulfide quantum dots self-assembled in an organic matrix formed by amphiphilic ligands (oleic acid molecules). The obtained 3D superstructures possess an orthorhombic lattice with the distance between the nanocrystals as large as 10-40 nm. Analysis of self-assembly and destruction of the superstructures in time performed by a SAXS technique shows that their morphology depends on the quantity of amphiphilic ligands and width of the quantum dot size and its distribution. Formation of the superstructures is discussed in terms of a model describing the lyotropic crystal formation by micelles from three-phase mixtures. The results show that the organic molecules possessing surfactant properties and capable of forming micelles with nanoparticles as a micelle core can be utilized as building blocks for the creation of novel metamaterials based on a highly ordered 3D network of semiconductors, metals or magnetic nanoparticles.

Fabrication of Photoluminescent Quantum Dot Thiol-yne Nanocomposites via Thermal Curing or Photopolymerization

Strong, flexible, and transparent materials have garnered tremendous interest in recent years as materials and electronics manufacturers pursue devices that are bright, flexible, durable, tailorable, and lightweight. Depending on the starting components, polymers fabricated using thiol-yne chemistry have been shown to be exceptionally strong and/or flexible, while also being amenable to modification by the incorporation of nanoparticles. In the present work, novel ligands were synthesized and used to functionalize quantum dots (QDs) of various diameters. The functionalized QDs were then incorporated into thiol-yne prepolymer matrices. These matrices were subsequently polymerized to form QD thiol-yne nanocomposite polymers. To demonstrate the versatility of the fabrication process, the prepolymers were either thermally cured or photopolymerized. The resulting transparent nanocomposites expressed the size-specific color of the QDs within them when exposed to ultraviolet irradiation, demonstrating that QDs can be incorporated into thiol-yne polymers without significantly altering QD expression. With the inclusion of QDs, thiol-yne nanocomposite polymers are promising candidates for use in numerous applications including as device display materials, optical lens materials, and/or sensor materials.

Reusable Xerogel Containing Quantum Dots with High Fluorescence Retention

Although various analytical methods have been established based on quantum dots (QDs), most were conducted in solution, which is inadequate for storage/transportation and rapid analysis. Moreover, the potential environmental problems caused by abandoned QDs cannot be ignored. In this paper, a reusable xerogel containing CdTe with strong emission is established by introducing host–guest interactions between QDs and polymer matrix. This xerogel shows high QDs loading capacity without decrease or redshift in fluorescence (the maximum of loading is 50 wt % of the final xerogel), which benefits from the steric hindrance of β-cyclodextrin (βCD) molecules. Host–guest interactions immobilize QDs firmly, resulting in the excellent fluorescence retention of the xerogel. The good detecting performance and reusability mean this xerogel could be employed as a versatile analysis platform (for quantitative and qualitative analyses). In addition, the xerogel can be self-healed by the aid of water.

Oxygen insensitive thiol–ene photo-click chemistry for direct imprint lithography of oxides

UV-nanoimprint lithography (UV-NIL) is a promising technique for direct fabrication of functional oxide nanostructures. Since it is mostly carried out in aerobic conditions, the free radical polymerization during imprinting is retarded due to the radical scavenging ability of oxygen. Therefore, it is highly desirable to have an oxygen-insensitive photo-curable resin that not only alleviates the requirement of inert conditions but also enables patterning without making substantial changes in the process. Here we demonstrate the formulation of metal-containing resins that employ oxygen-insensitive thiol–ene photo-click chemistry. Allyl acetoacetate (AAAc) has been used as a bifunctional monomer that, on one hand, chelates with the metal ion, and on the other hand, offers a reactive alkene group for polymerization. Pentaerythritol tetrakis(3-mercaptopropionate) (PETMP), a four-arm thiol derivative, is used as a crosslinker as well as an active component in the thiol–ene photo-click chemistry. The FT-IR analyses on the metal-free and metal-containing resin formulations revealed that the optimum ratio of alkene to thiol is 1 : 0.5 for an efficient photo-click chemistry. The thiol–ene photo-click chemistry has been successfully demonstrated for direct imprinting of oxides by employing TiO₂ and Ta₂O₅ as candidate systems. The imprinted films of metal-containing resins were subjected to calcination to obtain the corresponding patterned metal oxides. This technique can potentially be expanded to other oxide systems as well.

Metal-containing oxygen-insensitive photocurable resin formulations are designed based on thiol–ene click chemistry that are suitable for UV nanoimprinting to directly pattern oxides.

Modulatory Functionalization of Gold Nanorods Using Supramolecular Assemblies

Supramolecular-assembly-mediated functionalization of gold nanorods (GNRs) has been developed by reversible phase transfer between water and oils, which offers a facile method for fabricating robust GNRs with surface-charge tunability. In this regard, trimethylammonium (TMA) GNRs were initially prepared from conventional cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) GNRs by means of a ligand-exchange reaction in the presence of an excess amount of TMA ligands. To further expand their functionality and potential applications, electrostatic assemblies of positively charged TMA-GNRs with negatively charged oleate ions were prepared. These assemblies (OA-GNRs) can undergo facile phase transfer from water to hexane. Interestingly, the reversible electrostatic assembly between the TMA and OA ions fabricated onto GNRs can be easily disrupted by treatment with HCl, which removes the OA ions from the GNRs to re-form the TMA-GNRs, which can be made soluble in aqueous media again. In addition, OA-GNRs can be further used for the synthesis of negatively charged GNRs such as 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid (MUA) GNRs, which are hard to prepare directly from CTAB-GNRs. This versatile method for phase transfer and functionalization on GNRs is expected to broaden the scope of their applications in sensing, biomedical imaging, photothermal therapies, and drug delivery systems.

Robust, Uniform, and Highly Emissive Quantum Dot-Polymer Films and Patterns Using Thiol-Ene Chemistry

This work demonstrates a facile and versatile method for generating low scattering cross-linked quantum dot (QD)-polymer composite films and patterned highly emissive structures with ultrahigh QD loading, minimal phase separation, and tunable mechanical properties. Uniform QD-polymer films are fabricated using thiol-ene chemistry, in which cross-linked polymer networks are rapidly produced in ambient conditions via fast UV polymerization in bulk to suppress QD aggregation. UV-controlled thiol-ene chemistry limits phase separation through producing highly QD loaded cross-linked composites with loadings above majority of those reported in the literature (<1%) and approaching 30%. As the QD loading is increased, the thiol and ene conversion decreases, resulting in nanocomposites with widely variable and tailorable mechanical properties as a function of UV irradiation time with an elastic modulus decreasing to 1 GPa being characteristic of reinforced elastomeric materials, in contrast to usually observed stiff and brittle materials under these loading conditions. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the thiol-ene chemistry is compatible with soft-imprint lithography, making it possible to pattern highly loaded QD films while preserving the optical properties essential for high gain and low optical loss devices. The versatility of thiol-ene chemistry to produce high-dense QD-polymer films potentially makes it an important technique for polymer-based elastomeric optical metamaterials, where efficient light propagation is critical, like peculiar waveguides, sensors, and optical gain films.
