A Comprehensive Review on Processing, Development and Applications of Organofunctional Silanes and Silane-Based Hyperbranched Polymers

Since the last decade, hyperbranched polymers (HBPs) have gained wider theoretical interest and practical applications in sensor technology due to their ease of synthesis, highly branched structure but dimensions within nanoscale, a larger number of modified terminal groups and lowering of viscosity in polymer blends even at higher HBP concentrations. Many researchers have reported the synthesis of HBPs using different organic-based core-shell moieties. Interestingly, silanes, as organic-inorganic hybrid modifiers of HBP, are of great interest as they resulted in a tremendous improvement in HBP properties like increasing thermal, mechanical and electrical properties compared to that of organic-only moieties. This review focuses on the research progress in organofunctional silanes, silane-based HBPs and their applications since the last decade. The effect of silane type, its bi-functional nature, its influence on the final HBP structure and the resultant properties are covered in detail. Methods to enhance the HBP properties and challenges that need to be overcome in the near future are also discussed.

Efficient N-formylation of primary aromatic amines using novel solid acid magnetic nanocatalyst

Sulfonic acid functionalized over biguanidine fabricated silica-coated heterogeneous magnetic nanoparticles (NP@SO₃H) have been synthesized, well characterized and explored for the first time, as an efficient and recyclable catalyst for N-formylation of primary amines under mild reaction conditions. Exploiting the magnetic nature of Fe₃O₄, the prepared catalyst was readily recovered from the reaction mixture via an external magnet. The catalyst can be reused for up to six cycles without any substantial loss of catalytic activity. The cost effectiveness, simple methodology, wide substrate tolerance, excellent yield and easy work-up are the additional advantages of present catalytic system.

A decennary update on applications of metal nanoparticles (MNPs) in the synthesis of nitrogen- and oxygen-containing heterocyclic scaffolds

Heterocycles have been found to be of much importance as several nitrogen- and oxygen-containing heterocycle compounds exist amongst the various USFDA-approved drugs. Because of the advancement of nanotechnology, nanocatalysis has found abundant applications in the synthesis of heterocyclic compounds. Numerous nanoparticles (NPs) have been utilized for several organic transformations, which led us to make dedicated efforts for the complete coverage of applications of metal nanoparticles (MNPs) in the synthesis of heterocyclic scaffolds reported from 2010 to 2019. Our emphasize during the coverage of catalyzed reactions of the various MNPs such as Ag, Au, Co, Cu, Fe, Ni, Pd, Pt, Rh, Ru, Si, Ti, and Zn has not only been on nanoparticles catalyzed synthetic transformations for the synthesis of heterocyclic scaffolds, but also provide an inherent framework for the reader to select a suitable catalytic system of interest for the synthesis of desired heterocyclic scaffold.

Synthesis of 2-deoxy-d-glucose coated Fe3O4 nanoparticles for application in targeted delivery of the Pt(iv) prodrug of cisplatin – a novel approach in chemotherapy

Pt(IV) prodrug of cisplatin was loaded on 2DG functionalized silica coated Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles. The formulation alone exhibited biocompatibility whereas Pt(IV) loaded formulation exhibited cytotoxicity comparable with cisplatin.

Propylsulfonic acid-anchored isocyanurate-based periodic mesoporous organosilica (PMO-ICS-Pr-SO3H): A new and highly efficient recoverable nanoporous catalyst for the one-pot synthesis of bis(indolyl)methane derivatives

A new propylsulfonic acid-anchored isocyanurate bridging periodic mesoporous organosilica (PMO-ICS-Pr-SO₃H) was prepared and shown to be a highly efficient recyclable nanoporous catalyst for the one-pot synthesis of bis(indolyl)methane derivatives in good to excellent yields from indole and different aldehydes in EtOH under mild reaction conditions in short reaction times. Moreover, the nanoporous catalyst was recovered and reused at least four times without significant decrease in its catalytic activity. The PMO-ICS-Pr-SO₃H catalyst was characterizred by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetry analysis (TGA) and N₂ adsorption-desorption isotherms techniques as well as field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy. Compared to the classical methodologies, this method illustrated significant advantages including low loading of the catalyst, high to excellent yields, short reaction times, avoiding the use of toxic transition metals or reactive reagents for modification of the catalytic activity, easy separation and purification of the products, and reusability of the catalyst.
