Aggregation induced emission and volatile acid vapour sensing in acridine appended poly (aryl ether) based low molecular weight organogelator

Considerable research attention has been devoted to the development of portable and rapid fluorescence sensors that can selectively detect volatile acids, due to the harmful effects of acid vapour on the environment and human health. Although various types of fluorophores have been reported for sensing volatile acid vapours, regulation of the sensory response using aggregation induced emissive (AIE) based gelators has rarely been reported. In this study, we present the design and synthesis of a novel organogelator that is capable of sensing volatile acids through AIE. An acridine-attached poly(aryl ether) dendron molecular system is synthesized through an aldimine coupling reaction, which self-assembles and forms a gel, exhibiting AIE behavior. The synthesized molecule and prepared gel were characterized using NMR, MASS, XRD, HRSEM and rheology techniques. The AIE property of APD was investigated using steady-state absorption and emission spectroscopic techniques. The sensory response of the APD gelator was tested with various analytes, and the results indicated that APD shows rapid response, particularly to acid vapours, where the detection limits (DL) of trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), hydrochloric acid (HCl) and nitric acid (HNO3) vapor were as low as 0.22, 0.9 and 0.30 ppm, respectively. An APD solid film in filter paper shows a visual color change from yellow to red in an aqueous acidic medium, and the effect is reversed in an alkaline medium. These findings suggest that an APD gelator could potentially be utilized to generate a portable acid vapor sensor kit due to its low detection limit and rapid response time, and it could be also be used as a substitute for existing acid indicators.

Recent Trends in the Design, Synthesis, Spectroscopic Behavior, and Applications of Benzazole-Based Molecules with Solid-State Luminescence Enhancement Properties

Molecules that exhibit solid-state luminescence enhancement, i.e. the rare property to be more strongly emissive in the solid state than in solution, find an increasing number of applications in the fields of optoelectronic and nanophotonic devices, sensors, security papers, imaging, and theranostics. Benzazole (BZ) heterocycles are of particular value in this context. The simple enlargement of their π-electron system using a -C=C-Ar or -N=C-Ar moiety is enough for intrinsic solid-state luminescence enhancement (SLE) properties to appear. Their association with a variety of polyaromatic motifs leads to SLE-active molecules that frequently display attractive electroluminescent properties and are sensitive to mechanical stimuli. The excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process that takes place in some hydroxy derivatives reinforces the SLE effect and enables the development of new sensors based on a protection/deprotection strategy. BZ may also be incorporated into frameworks that are prototypical aggregation-induced enhancement (AIE) luminogens, such as the popular tetraphenylethene (TPE), leading to materials with excellent optical and electroluminescent performance. This review encompasses the various ways to use BZ units in SLE systems. It underlines the significant progresses recently made in the understanding of the photophysical mechanisms involved. A brief overview of the synthesis shows that BZ units are robust building blocks, easily incorporated into a variety of structures. Generally speaking, we try to show how these small heterocycles may offer advantages for the design of increasingly efficient luminescent materials.

Synergistic Tricolor Emission-Based White Light from Supramolecular Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Gel

The development of engineered hybrid systems by encapsulating nanoparticles in gel scaffolds and their synergistic effects are highly crucial for the fabrication of advanced functional materials. Herein, a series of dipeptides containing an aromatic amino acid at the N-terminal and an aliphatic amino acid at the C-terminal were synthesized and studied. Among them, only the dipeptide l-Phe-l-Val can form both hydro- and organogelator, depending on the N- and C-terminal protecting groups. The organogel shows bright blue emission under 366 nm UV irradiation; however, the hydrogel does not show such blue emission. Such kind of emission may be due to the self-assembly and high degree of aggregation in the gel state of the phenyl ring. The blue-emitting organogel efficiently encapsulates green emission source CdSe quantum dots and red emission source LD 700 perchlorate dye. The resulting organic-inorganic hybrid gel exhibits white light emission due to the synergistic effect under 366 nm UV irradiation.

Two novel AIEE-active imidazole/ α-cyanostilbene derivatives: photophysical properties, reversible fluorescence switching, and detection of explosives

Novel imidazole derivatives containing the α-cyanostilbene unit can act as reversible acid/base stimulated fluorescence switches in the solid state, as chemosensors for explosives detection in aqueous systems, and as test strip detectors.

Role of Voluminous Substituents in Controlling the Optical Properties of Disc/Planar-Like Small Organic Molecules: Toward Molecular Emission in Solid State

Inspired by the role of coadsorbents in dye-sensitized solar cells, a pathway to disfavor aggregation in disclike luminophores was studied to enhance solid-state emission. By restricting the intense π-π stacking using a multicyclic aliphatic ring system, we brought the lithocholic ring system as bulky side substitution into the fluorophore design. Compared to the small-size cyclohexyl substitution in BC-CY6, which exhibited a bathochromic shift in solid-state emission owing to the intermolecular interactions, lithocholic-substituted BC-LTH had reduced intense intermolecular interactions. This very bulky/voluminous side substitution (lithocholic unit) helped us extract intermolecular interaction-free molecular emission in solid state. The cyclohexyl substitution provided solid-state emission, and the broad and high Stokes shift provided an insight into stacking interactions. Face-to-face stacking-originated dimerlike species was observed in the crystal packing, which was studied by theoretical geometry optimization. The dimer species exhibited an intermolecular distance of 3.5 Å. The molecular sizes of the developed chromophores were estimated by geometry optimization, and it was concluded that the dimeric interactions in BC-LTH may not be formed owing to the voluminous nature of the side substitution present. Hence, we have been able to successfully establish through molecular level understanding the role of lithocholic functionality in tuning the optoelectronic properties of various emissive materials for different applications.
