Sodium alginate/ager colourimetric film on porous substrate layer: Potential in intelligent food packaging

Colourimetric indicators have potential applications in monitoring food freshness and offer a simple, rapid, effective, and economical approach. Blending sodium alginate (SA) with agar (AG), an ideal choice for solid substrates in colourimetric indicators, can modify mechanical compliance and optical properties. However, the limitations in the water-sustaining capacity and dye migration of hydrogel substrates significantly impede the scalability and commercial application of these indicators. In this study, we designed and prepared a bilayer-structured indicator featuring an SA/AG colourimetric film on a porous Polypropylene fluoride (PVDF)/SiO2 encapsulation film. This design aims to enhance the water-sustaining capacity and reduce dye migration from the SA/AG colourimetric film. The PVDF/SiO2 composite film was prepared using a peeling-assisted phase-conversion process, which enabled the indicator to selectively allow gas, but not water, to pass through its porous substrate. Furthermore, we tested the layered indicator film by monitoring changes in shrimp freshness. The results revealed significant and distinguishable colour changes in the indicators corresponding to the freshness and spoilage of the shrimp.

Woven fabric-based separators with low tortuosity for sodium-ion batteries

In order to achieve high-performance and stable sodium-ion batteries, numerous attempts have been made to construct continuous ion transport pathways, in which a separator is one of the key components that affects the battery performance. In this study, a novel low-tortuosity woven fabric separator is fabricated by combining a weaving technique with a cellulose-solution method, followed by an infusion of a TEMPO-oxidized bacterial cellulose slurry into woven fabric substrates. The macropores in the fabric combine with the micropores in the oxidized bacterial cellulose to form a separator with a suitable pore structure and low tortuosity, forming a continuous sodium ion transport channel within the sodium-ion battery and effectively enhancing ion transport dynamics. The results show that, compared with a commercial polypropylene separator, the TEMPO-oxidized bacterial cellulose-woven fabric separator has a special weaving structure and lower tortuosity (0.77), as well as significant advantages in tensile strength (3.07 MPa), ionic conductivity (1.15 mS c), ionic transfer number (0.75), thermal stability, and electrochemical stability. This novel and simple preparation method provides new possibilities for achieving high-performance separators of sodium-ion batteries through rational structural design by textile technology.

Recent Development in Separators for High-Temperature Lithium-Ion Batteries

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are promising energy storage devices for integrating renewable resources and high power applications, owing to their high energy density, light weight, high flexibility, slow self-discharge rate, high rate charging capability, and long battery life. LIBs work efficiently at ambient temperatures, however, at high-temperatures, they cause serious issues due to the thermal fluctuation inside batteries during operation. The separator is a key component of batteries and is crucial for the sustainability of LIBs at high-temperatures. The high thermal stability with minimum thermal shrinkage and robust mechanical strength are the prime requirements along with high porosity, ionic conductivity, and electrolyte uptake for highly efficient high-temperature LIBs. This Review deals with the recent studies and developments in separator technologies for high-temperature LIBs with respect to their structural layered formation. The recent progress in monolayer and multilayer separators along with the developed preparation methodologies is discussed in detail. Future challenges and directions toward the advancement in separator technology are also discussed for achieving remarkable performance of separators in a high-temperature environment.

Recent Advances in Poly(vinylidene fluoride) and Its Copolymers for Lithium-Ion Battery Separators

The separator membrane is an essential component of lithium-ion batteries, separating the anode and cathode, and controlling the number and mobility of the lithium ions. Among the polymer matrices most commonly investigated for battery separators are poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and its copolymers poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-trifluoroethylene) (PVDF-TrFE), poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP), and poly(vinylidene fluoride-cochlorotrifluoroethylene) (PVDF-CTFE), due to their excellent properties such as high polarity and the possibility of controlling the porosity of the materials through binary and ternary polymer/solvent systems, among others. This review presents the recent advances on battery separators based on PVDF and its copolymers for lithium-ion batteries. It is divided into the following sections: single polymer and co-polymers, surface modification, composites, and polymer blends. Further, a critical comparison between those membranes and other separator membranes is presented, as well as the future trends on this area.

Analysis of the Separator Thickness and Porosity on the Performance of Lithium-Ion Batteries

In this paper, investigation on the effect of separator thickness and porosity on the performance of Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries are analyzed. In recent years there have been intensive efforts to improve the performance of the lithium-ion batteries. Separators are important component of lithium-ion batteries since they isolate the electrodes and prevent electrical short-circuits. Separators are also used as an electrolyte reservoir which is used as a medium for ions transfer during charge and discharge. Electrochemical performance of the batteries is highly dependent on the material, structure, and separators used. This paper compares the effects of material properties and the porosity of the separator on the performance of lithium-ion batteries. Four different separators, polypropylene (PP) monolayer and polypropylene/polyethylene/polypropylene (PP/PE/PP) trilayer, with the thickness of 20 μm and 25 μm and porosities of 41%, 45%, 48%, and 50% were used for testing. It was found that PP separator with porosity of 41% and PP/PE/PP separator of 45% porosity perform better compared to other separators.

Recent advances in functional modification of separators in lithium-sulfur batteries

Practical applications of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are greatly limited by rapid capacity attenuation caused by polysulfide shuttling. Functional modification of separators has been proved to be an efficient strategy to restrain the polysulfide shuttling. Herein, we present a short overview of the recent advances in the development of multi-functional separators, and provide an outlook on the promising approaches for the construction of reliable Li-S batteries.

Separators with Biomineralized Zirconia Coatings for Enhanced Thermo- and Electro-Performance of Lithium-Ion Batteries

Porous separators are key components for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and they have drawn considerable attention because of their vital role in governing battery cost and performance (e.g., power density, safety, and longevity). Here, zirconia-coated separators were fabricated via a facile biomineralization process with the aim to improve the performance of commercialized polypropylene separators. The as-prepared organic-inorganic composite separators show excellent thermal stability, even at the melting temperature (160 °C) of polypropylene. This is due to the well-distributed zirconia coatings on the separator surfaces. Furthermore, the interfacial impedance of the composite separators is only 343.8 Ω, which is four times lower than the pristine polypropylene ones. The results demonstrate an attractive method to prepare organic-inorganic composite separators with outstanding properties, which makes them promising candidates for high-performance LIBs.
