Functional Materials for Water Restoration: A "Fish Cage" for Efficient Capture of Pb(II) Ions

In this work, a "fish cage" material for trapping Pb(II) ions has been successfully obtained, which is a novel clathrate functionalized metal-oganic framework (Cage-MOF) by introducing free adsorption sites (SO42-). The three-dimensional (3D) cage structure of Cage-MOF gives it a larger contact area and can capture "swimming fish" (Pb(II)) like a "fishing cage" in a water solution. This is the first high-efficiency adsorption material obtained by introducing free coordination groups. Cage-MOF not only has excellent water stability but also improves the selectivity and affinity for Pb(II) ions in water because of the presence of sulfate adsorption sites, and its adsorption capacity is as high as 806 mg/g. This work shows a novel and effective idea for the synthesis of water restoration materials.

Preparation and characterization of cellulose nanocrystals from corncob via ionic liquid [Bmim][HSO4] hydrolysis: effects of major process conditions on dimensions of the product

In this study, cellulose nanocrystals were prepared via the hydrolysis of corncob (CC) biomass using Brønsted acid ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hydrogen sulfate [Bmim][HSO₄]. The corncob was subjected to alkaline pretreatment, and was then hydrolysed by [Bmim][HSO₄], which acted as both solvent and catalyst. The effects of process conditions, including mass percent of CC (1.0-10.0%), reaction temperature (46-110 °C), and reaction time (1.2-2.8 h) on the size of cellulose nanocrystals (IL-CCCNC) were investigated by response surface methodology-central composite design. The obtained IL-CCCNC was characterized by Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy, zeta sizer, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetry. The results showed that the dimensions of the nanocellulose products were affected by the mass percent of CC and the reaction temperature, but were not significantly influenced by the reaction time under the studied conditions. The optimal conditions, estimated by the developed model, were a mass percent of 2.49%, reaction temperature of 100 °C, and reaction time of 1.5 h. The process successfully produced IL-CCCNC with a yield of 40.13%, average size of 166 nm, and crystallinity index (CrI) of 62.5%. The morphology, chemical fingerprints, and thermal properties of the obtained IL-CCCNC were comparable to those extracted by alkaline and acid hydrolysis. After the reaction, [Bmim][HSO₄] could be recovered with a yield of 88.32%, making it a viable green catalyst for the hydrolysis of CC cellulose. The findings are of direct industrial relevance as optimal processes can be developed to produce nanocellulose crystals with desirable size and physicochemical characteristics.

Study on the Adsorption Performance and Adsorption Mechanism of Graphene Oxide by Red Sandstone in Aqueous Solution

In order to deal with the increasingly serious pollution of graphene oxide (GO) to the environment. In this paper, the use of red sandstone to treat GO-contaminated aqueous solution is proposed for the first time, and the adsorption capacity and adsorption mechanism of red sandstone to GO are discussed. The controlled variable method was used to explore the optimal pH, concentration, and quality of red sandstone for GO aqueous solution. The adsorption isotherm, thermodynamics, and adsorption kinetics were fitted. Adsorption characterization tests were performed using XRD, AFM, XPS, FT-IR, SAP, TEM, SAP, laser particle size analyzer, and SEM. The results show that when $T=303\text{K}$ , the optimum adsorption condition of red sandstone for GO is $\text{pH}=4$ , the mass of the adsorbent is 40 mg, and when the concentration of GO is 80 mg/L, the adsorption capacity is 90 mg/g. The adsorption isotherm model fits the Langmuir model. The adsorption thermodynamic experiments and fitting results show that the reaction is endothermic. XRD and FT-IR tests showed that CaCO3 in red sandstone was involved in the adsorption of GO. SEM, TEM, and AFM microscopic results showed that GO was adsorbed on the surface of red sandstone particles. The XPS test showed that Ca2+ in red sandstone and C=O bond in GO undergo ionic or coordination reaction. The adsorption kinetics fit a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. This study will provide some references for the removal of GO in the environment and the interaction mechanism with natural minerals.

Recent advances of ordered mesoporous silica materials for solid-phase extraction

This review mainly focuses on the development and application of ordered mesoporous silica materials for solid-phase extraction in recent years. It overviews not only bare mesoporous silica but also the functionalized mesoporous silica with organic groups, molecularly imprinted polymers, and magnetic materials. These mesoporous silica materials were used as the extraction adsorbents in cartridge solid-phase extraction, dispersive solid-phase extraction, magnetic solid-phase extraction, micro-solid-phase extraction and matrix solid phase dispersion. Coupled with atomic emission spectrometry, chromatography or other detection methods, these techniques efficiently extracted and sensitively determined various targets, such as metal ions, perfluorocarboxylic acids, pesticides, drugs, endocrine disruptors, phenols, flavanones, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, parabens and so on. Based on unique advantages of mesoporous silica materials, the developed analytical method successfully analyzed different matrix samples, like environmental water samples, soil samples, food samples, biological samples and cosmetics. In addition, the prospects of these materials in solid-phase extraction are presented, which can offer an outlook for the further development and applications.

A Novel Coordination Polymer as Adsorbent Used to Remove Hg(II) and Pb(II) from Water with Different Adsorption Mechanisms

Under the hydrothermal condition, a new type of two-dimensional coordination polymer ([Cd(D-Cam)(3-bpdb)]_n, Cd-CP) has been constructed. It is composed of D-(+)-Camphoric-Cd(II) (D-cam-Cd(II)) one-dimensional chain and bridging 1,4-bis(3-pyridyl)-2,3-diaza-1,3-butadiene (3-bpdb) ligands. Cd-CP has a good removal effect for Hg(II) and Pb(II), and the maximum adsorption capacity is 545 and 450 mg/g, respectively. Interestingly, thermodynamic studies have shown that the adsorption processes of Hg(II) and Pb(II) on Cd-CP use completely different thermodynamic mechanisms, in which the adsorption of Hg(II) is due to a strong electrostatic interaction with Cd-CP, while that of Pb(II) is through a weak coordination with Cd-CP. Moreover, Cd-CP has a higher affinity for Hg(II), and when Hg(II) and Pb(II) coexist, Cd-CP preferentially adsorbs Hg(II).

Optimization of Congo red dye adsorption from wastewater by a modified commercial zeolite catalyst using response surface modeling approach

In the present work, Zeolite A was modified by using hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (HDTMABr) for adsorption of the Congo red (CR) dye from synthetic aqueous solutions. The Modified Zeolite A (MZA) was characterized by XRD, SEM, and FTIR. The influence of solution pH (in the 4-12 range), ionic strength (0.1-1 M), contact time (180 min), initial CR concentration (20-60 mg/L), temperature (24-36 °C), and an adsorbent dose (1-3 g m/L) on the % dye removal and adsorbent capacity were studied. A combined effect of the initial CR concentration and temperature on the CR removal % by MZA was also studied by applying response surface methodology (RSM). Experimental values were in a good agreement with those predicated by a second-order quartic model. A maximum of 99.24% dye removal and adsorbent capacity of 21.11 mg/g was achieved under the following conditions: pH = 7, initial CR concentration = 60 mg/L, temperature = 24 °C, ionic strength = 0.1 M, adsorbent dose = 3 g/L and 90 min contact time. The equilibrium data were subjected to the Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin isotherms, with the latter providing the best fit while kinetic adsorption studies were conducted by applying three models. The results indicated that the removal process was best described by the pseudo-second-order model. The present study demonstrates that modified MZA can be utilized for the highly efficient CR dye removal.

Synthesis of Core-Shell Magnetic Supramolecular Nanocatalysts based on Amino-Functionalized Calix[4]arenes for the Synthesis of 4H-Chromenes by Ultrasonic Waves

One of the most common phenol-formaldehyde cyclic oligomers from hydroxyalkylation reactions that exhibit supramolecular chemistry are calixarenes. These macrocyclic compounds are qualified to act as synthetic catalysts due to their specific features including being able to form host-guest complexes, having unique structural scaffolds and their relative ease of chemical modifications with a variety of functions on their upper rim and lower rim. Here, a functional magnetic nanocatalyst was designed and synthesized by using a synthetic amino-functionalized calix[4]arene. Its catalytic activity was evaluated in a one-pot synthesis of 2-amino-4H-chromene derivatives. Besides, this novel magnetic nanocatalyst was characterized by spectroscopic and analytical techniques such as FT-IR, EDX, FE-SEM, TEM VSM, XRD analysis.

Ultrasound wave assisted adsorption of congo red using gold-magnetic nanocomposite loaded on activated carbon: Optimization of process parameters

In this study, gold-magnetic nanocomposite in the presence of ultrasound wave assisted was synthesized and loaded on activated carbon (Au-Fe₃O₄-NCs-AC) by simple, fast and low-cost process. This novel material was applied for ultrasound assisted adsorption of congo red (CR) as model of toxic and even carcinogenic substance from aqueous solution. The detail of morphology and identity of Au-Fe₃O₄-AC was characterized by SEM and TEM techniques and correlation among response to variables such as pH (2-10), adsorbent mass (0.005-0.025 g), initial CR concentration (10-30 mg L^-1) and ultrasound time (2-6 min) was investigated by response surface methodology (RSM) under central composite design (CCD). Analysis of variance (ANOVA) exhibit a high R² value of 0.999 and confirm suitability of constructed second-order regression model for excellent evaluation and prediction of the experimental data. The interaction and main factor and optimum conditions of the under study process were determined from response surface plots based on desirability function. The maximum CR adsorption were achieved at pH of 4, 15 mg L^-1 of CR, 0.017 g of Au-Fe₃O₄-AC and 5 min sonication which owing to 99.49% removal efficiency is highly recommended for future CR removal from different matrixes. Adsorption kinetic follow second-order rate expression in combination to inter particle diffusion and equilibrium adsorption data best represented by the Langmuir isotherm with maximum mono-layer adsorption capacity of 43.88 mg g^-1.

Insight into the Synergistic Effect on Selective Adsorption for Heavy Metal Ions by a Polypyrrole/TiO2 Composite

Polymer/metal oxide composites are promising candidates for the treatment of water pollution. Adsorption selectivity as well as a large adsorption capacity are two key factors for treating wastewater containing multiple ions. Herein, a PPy⁺/TiO₂(O^-) composite with a heterojunction structure was first discovered to have novel selectivity toward heavy metal ions. An interesting self-doping nature of TiO₂(O^-) together with SO₄^2- for PPy⁺ was reported. This interesting structure contributed to an impressive selective adsorption capability with an ascending order of Zn²⁺ > Pb²⁺ ≫ Cu²⁺ in a ternary ion system, where the adsorption for Cu²⁺ could be almost suppressed. Through the designed adsorption experiments and characterization techniques including Fourier transform infrared, thermogravimetric analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, a universal synergistic mechanism for PPy⁺/TiO₂(O^-) composite was first proposed and confirmed. The doping and dedoping of metal oxide (dopant) from the polymer dictates the adsorption selectivity, where the selectivity is determined by the interaction between TiO₂ and heavy metal ions. This work may provide some useful guidelines for designing adsorbents with selectivity toward specific heavy metal ions.

Silver-choline chloride modified graphene oxide: Novel nano-bioelectrochemical sensor for celecoxib detection and CCD-RSM model

In this study, silver nanoparticles modified choline chloride functionalized graphene oxide (AgNPs-ChCl-GO) was synthesized using sonochemical method and utilized as a bioelectrochemical sensor for detection of celecoxib (CEL). The characterization studies were ultimately performed in order to acheive a more complete understanding of the morphological and structural features of the AgNPs-ChCl-GO using different techniques including FT-IR, AFM, FE-SEM, EDX, and XRD. AgNPs-ChCl-GO demonstrated a significant improvement in the reduction activity of CEL due to the enhancement in the current response compared to the bare carbon paste electrode (CPE). The optimum experimental conditions, were optimized using central composite design (CCD) methodology. The differential pulse voltammetry (DPVs) showed an expanded linear dynamic ranges of 9.6 × 10^-9-7.4 × 10^-7 M for celecoxib in Britton-Robinson buffer in pH 5.0 with. LOD (S/N = 3) and LOQ (S/N = 10) were obtained 2.51 × 10^-9 M and 6.58 × 10^-9 M respectively. AgNPs-ChCl-GO-carbon paste electrode exhibited suitable properties and high accuracy determination of celecoxib in the human plasma sample.

Ultrasound assisted phytosynthesis of iron oxide nanoparticle

The present work deals with the ultrasound assisted green synthesis of iron oxide nano particle using Coriandrum sativum leaf extract as a reducing agent. The synthesized iron oxide nanoparticle was confirmed by UV spectra. The characterization was done to know more about morphology and size of the particle by SEM analysis which shows spherical particles with size ranging from 20 to 90nm. The antimicrobial activity of the leaf extract and the synthesized nanoparticles was studied against the pathogens Micrococcus luteus, Staphylococcus aureus and Aspergillus niger. The ultrasound assisted iron oxide nanoparticle shows higher scavenging activity and antimicrobial activity compared with iron oxide nanoparticle synthesized by magnetic stirrer and Coriandrum sativum leaf extract.
