Catalytic Reduction of Environmental Pollutants with Biopolymer Hydrogel Cross-Linked Gelatin Conjugated Tin-Doped Gadolinium Oxide Nanocomposites

In the present study, a biopolymer nanocomposite hydrogel based on gelatin and tin-doped gadolinium oxide (Sn-Gd₂O₃@GH) was prepared for the efficient reduction of water pollutants. The method of Sn-Gd₂O₃@GH preparation consisted of two steps. A Sn-Gd₂O₃ nanomaterial was synthesized by a hydrothermal method and mixed with a hot aqueous solution (T > 60 °C) of gelatin polymer, followed by cross-linking. Due to the presence of abundant functional groups on the skeleton of gelatin, such as carboxylic acid (–COOH) and hydroxyl (–OH), it was easily cross-linked with formaldehyde. The structure, morphology, and composition of Sn-Gd₂O₃@GH were further characterized by the FESEM, XRD, EDX, and FTIR techniques. The FESEM images located the distribution of the Sn-Gd₂O₃ nanomaterial in a GH matrix of 30.06 nm. The XRD patterns confirmed the cubic crystalline structure of Gd₂O₃ in a nanocomposite hydrogel, while EDS elucidated the elemental composition of pure Sn-Gd₂O₃ powder and cross-linked the Sn-Gd₂O₃@GH samples. The synthesized Sn-Gd₂O₃@GH nanocomposite was used for the removal of different azo dyes and nitrophenols (NPs). It exhibited an efficient catalytic reduction of Congo red (CR) with a reaction rate of 9.15 × 10⁻¹ min⁻¹ with a strong NaBH₄-reducing agent. Moreover, the Sn-Gd₂O₃@GH could be easily recovered by discharging the reduced (colourless) dye, and it could be reused for a fresh cycle.

Fabrication of Novel and Potential Selective 4-Cyanophenol Chemical Sensor Probe Based on Cu-Doped Gd2O3 Nanofiber Materials Modified PEDOT:PSS Polymer Mixtures with Au/µ-Chip for Effective Monitoring of Environmental Contaminants from Various Water Samples

Herein, a novel copper-doped gadolinium oxide (Cu-doped Gd2O3; CGO) nanofiber was synthesized by a simple solution method in the basic phase and successfully characterized. We have used Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM) and Energy-Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) techniques for characterization of the CGO nanofiber. The CGO nanofiber was used later to modify Au-coated μ-Chips with poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) polymer mixtures (coating binder) to selectively detect 4-cyanophenol (4-CP) in an aqueous medium. Notable sensing performance was achieved with excellent sensitivity (2.4214 µAµM-1 cm-2), fast response time (~12 s), wide linear dynamic range (LDR = 1.0 nM-1.0 mM: R2 = 0.9992), ultra-low detection limit (LoD; 1.3 ± 0.1 pM at S/N = 3), limit of quantification (LoQ; 4.33 pM), and excellent reproducibility and repeatability for CGO/Au/μ-Chip sensor. This CGO modified Au/μ-chip was further applied with appropriate quantification and determination results in real environmental sample analyses.

Experimental and DFT studies of gadolinium decorated graphene oxide materials for their redox properties and as a corrosion inhibition barrier layer on Mg AZ13 alloy in a 3.5% NaCl environment

Magnesium alloys are broadly used worldwide in various applications; however, the serious disadvantage of these alloys are subject to corrosion and in aggressive/corrosive environments. A coating containing gadolinium-based composite materials can increase the alloy protection by strong electron transfer between the host alloy and the lanthanide-containing protective layer. This investigation aims to develop a Gd nanorod functionalised graphene oxide material as a corrosion inhibition barrier on the Mg alloy surface. The obtained functional materials were characterised by various spectroscopy techniques. The corrosion inhibition and composite material stability were studied by the electrochemical methods. The electrochemical stability was shown to increase with the applied current. The hydrogen evolution constantly increased and the corrosion inhibition significantly improved. Also, the computational studies of the material were performed, and their results support the experimental findings. Overall, the resultant composite material's corrosion resistance and cyclic stability are improved, and it could be used as a sodium-ion battery cathode material due to its high reversibility.

Gadolinium electrostatically interacts with the epoxy group of graphene oxide. Non-bonding electrons of graphene oxide enhance electron transfer between the polarized metal alloy surface and product alloy surface from the corrosive medium.

Lanthanide-Doped Photoluminescence Hollow Structures: Recent Advances and Applications

Lanthanide-doped nanomaterials have attracted significant attention for their preeminent properties and widespread applications. Due to the unique characteristic, the lanthanide-doped photoluminescence materials with hollow structures may provide advantages including enhanced light harvesting, intensified electric field density, improved luminescent property, and larger drug loading capacity. Herein, the synthesis, properties, and applications of lanthanide-doped photoluminescence hollow structures (LPHSs) are comprehensively reviewed. First, different strategies for the engineered synthesis of LPHSs are described in detail, which contain hard, soft, self-templating methods and other techniques. Thereafter, the relationship between their structure features and photoluminescence properties is discussed. Then, niche applications including biomedicines, bioimaging, therapy, and energy storage/conversion are focused on and superiorities of LPHSs for these applications are particularly highlighted. Finally, keen insights into the challenges and personal prospects for the future development of the LPHSs are provided.
