Abstract
Due to its low carbon footprint and environmental friendliness, polylactic acid (PLA) is one of the most widely produced bioplastics in the world. Manufacturing attempts to partially replace petrochemical plastics with PLA are growing year over year. Although this polymer is typically used in high-end applications, its use will increase only if it can be produced at the lowest cost. As a result, food wastes rich in carbohydrates can be used as the primary raw material for the production of PLA. Lactic acid (LA) is typically produced through biological fermentation, but a suitable downstream separation process with low production costs and high product purity is also essential. The global PLA market has been steadily expanding with the increased demand, and PLA has now become the most widely used biopolymer across a range of industries, including packaging, agriculture, and transportation. Therefore, the necessity for an efficient manufacturing method with reduced production costs and a vital separation method is paramount. The primary goal of this study is to examine the various methods of lactic acid synthesis, together with their characteristics and the metabolic processes involved in producing lactic acid from food waste. In addition, the synthesis of PLA, possible difficulties in its biodegradation, and its application in diverse industries have also been discussed.

Abstract
The valorization of organic solid waste to lactic acid (LA) in open fermentation systems has attracted tremendous interest in recent years. In this study, a highly efficient oriented LA bioconversion system from food waste (FW) in open mode was established. The maximum LA production was 115 g/L, with a high yield of 0.97 g-LA/g-total sugar. FW is a low-cost feedstock for LA production, containing indigenous hydrolysis and LA-producing bacteria (LAB). Saccharification and real-time pH control were found to be essential for maintaining LAB dominantly in open systems. Furthermore, microbial community analysis revealed that Enterococcus mundtii adapted to complex FW substrates and dominated the subsequent bioconversion process. The oriented LA bioconversion exhibited the capacity for biological carbon fixation by reducing CO2 emissions by at least 21 kg per ton of FW under anaerobic conditions.

Abstract
Municipal organic waste (biowaste) consists of food derived starch, protein and sugars, and lignocellulose derived cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin and pectin. Proper management enables nutrient recycling and sustainable production of platform chemicals such as lactic acid (LA). This review gathers the most important information regarding use of biowaste for LA fermentation covering pre-treatment, enzymatic hydrolysis, fermentation and downstream processing to achieve high purity LA. The optimal approach was found to treat the two biowaste fractions separately due to different pre-treatment and enzyme needs for achieving enzymatic hydrolysis and to do continues fermentation to achieve high cell density and high LA productivity up to 12 g/L/h for production of both L and D isomers. The specific productivity was 0.4 to 0.5 h-1 but with recalcitrant biomass, the enzymatic hydrolysis was rate limiting. Novel purification approaches included reactive distillation and emulsion liquid membrane separation yielding purities sufficient for polylactic acid production.

Abstract
This study was aimed at the exploration of high-efficiency and low-cost technique for glucoamylase (GA) production from food waste; moreover, the produced GA could be directly used in the hydrolysis of food waste. A mixture of food waste, rice waste and cake waste as a sole feedstock was investigated for the production of GA via solid-state fermentation. The highest GA activity of 458.3 U g-1 was obtained from the rice waste after 9 days of incubation. The cake waste also demonstrated a high GA production, achieving 406.5 U g-1 dry substrate. However, the most practical substrate for GA production that could be integrated in the food waste treatment was the mixed food waste, which could effectively produce GA without any additives or adjustments using the technique developed in this study. The optimum conditions for GA production from the mixed food waste were determined through a response surface methodology: the temperature of 31.16 °C, the inoculum amount of 1.54 mL, and the time of fermentation of 7.81 days. The maximum GA activity of 180.59 U g-1 could be achieved under these optimum conditions, which was actually much higher than those reported in the literature. This study showed that the mixed food waste could be an ideal feedstock for the on-site production of high-activity GA, and the produced GA could be directly applied in food waste hydrolysis, which significantly reduced the process cost.

Abstract
At present, diminishing oil resources and increasing environmental concerns have led to a shift toward the production of alternative biofuels. In the last few decades, butanol, as liquid biofuel, has received considerable research attention due to its advantages over ethanol. Several studies have focused on the production of butanol through the fermentation from raw renewable biomass, such as lignocellulosic materials. However, the low concentration and productivity of butanol production and the price of raw materials are limitations for butanol fermentation. Moreover, these limitations are the main causes of industrial decline in butanol production. This study reviews butanol fermentation, including the metabolism and characteristics of acetone-butanol-ethanol (ABE) producing clostridia. Furthermore, types of butanol production from biomass feedstock are detailed in this study. Specifically, this study introduces the recent progress on the efficient butanol production of "designed" and modified biomass. Additionally, the recent advances in the butanol fermentation process, such as multistage continuous fermentation, metabolic flow change of the electron carrier supplement, continuous fermentation with immobilization and recycling of cell, and the recent technical separation of the products from the fermentation broth, are described in this study.

Abstract
To maximize the final lactic acid productivity and concentration, temperature control was optimized using a mathematical modelling approach. A kinetic model, including cell growth, product formation and substrate consumption equations, was proposed to describe the lactic acid production process by Escherichia coli AC-521 with glycerol as the substrate. By constructing four functions, the temperature effect was introduced on the fermentation process, where four parameters (Xmax, μmax, Yps and β) were observed to be significantly affected by the temperature. For the convenience of application, the temperature control strategies were simplified by dividing the whole fermentation process into several units. In each unit, the temperature was controlled constantly. Based on the model, the optimal temperature for each unit was determined to maximize the final lactate productivity. This temperature control strategy can be effectively applied in batch and fed-batch cultures, and the verified experimental evaluation showed a good correlation with the model data. Under improved temperature control conditions, a maximal lactic acid concentration of 90.4 g L−1 was obtained after 80 h of fed-batch fermentation, giving a productivity of 1.13 g L−1 h−1, which is 1.2 times more than that in the conventional constant temperature during the cultivation course. With model-based temperature control, yield of lactic acid obtained was higher than that obtained in the conventional process with a constant temperature.![]()

Abstract
Food waste generation and disposal have led to several environmental problems, especially in developing countries. This phenomenon is partly because most cities rapidly urbanize, which results in population increase, urban settlement and waste generation. Improper management of waste has continued to create environmental problems. These problems have indeed interfered with the inadequate measures in managing other organic waste such as food waste. Food waste can be fermented and used for pathogen inactivation in fecal sludge (FS). The continual decrease in global crop production due to soil erosion, nutrient runoff and loss of organic matter has generated interest in using FS for soil amendment. However, due to the high number of pathogens in FS that are harmful to humans, FS must be treated before being used in agriculture. Thus, given the high amounts of food waste generated globally and the lactic acid potential of fermented food waste, several researchers have recently proposed the use of fermented food waste to suppress pathogens in FS. This review presents the various approaches in pathogen inactivation in FS using different types of food waste. On the basis of the literature review, the major problems associated with the generation, collection and application of food waste in pathogen inactivation in FS are discussed. Moreover, the trends and challenges that concern the applicability of each method are critically reviewed.
