Cu(ii)-assisted self-assembly of dicyandiamide-derived carbon dots: construction inspired from chemical evolution and its H2O2 sensing application

In the rapid development of artificial nanomaterials comparable to biological enzymes, we propose herein a novel concept for the construction of functional materials inspired from chemical evolution.

An ultrasensitive electrochemical aptasensor based on a single-stranded aptamer-Au@Fe-MIL-88 complex using methylene blue as an electrochemical probe for insulin detection

This work introduces an electrochemical aptasensor based on a single-stranded aptamer-Au@Fe-MIL-88 complex for sensitive and selective determination of insulin using differential pulls voltammetry. Au@Fe-MIL-88 with a large surface area was synthesized and employed as a suitable substrate for immobilization of the aptamer (APT-Au@Fe-MIL-88). Methylene blue (MB), as an electrochemical probe, was intercalated into the aptamer. Graphene oxide (GO) and zinc sulfide (ZnS) were placed on the Au electrode to amplify the MB current. Also, ZnS improves the immobilization of APT-Au@Fe-MIL-88 into the aptasensor through the strong interaction of Au-S. In the presence of the insulin, MB is released from the aptamer due to DNA conformational change, and as a result, the peak intensity of the intercalated MB was decreased. Under optimal conditions, the change in the current of MB was proportional to the insulin concentration in the range of 5.0 × 10^-16-5.0 × 10^-11 mol L^-1, with a superior ultra-low detection limit of 1.3 × 10^-16 mol L^-1. It was observed that the aptasensor is suitable for determining insulin in serum samples with good sensitivity and reproducibility and with recoveries ranging from 96.4 to 102.0%. The relative standard deviations (RSD) were lower than 3.8% (n = 3).

Detection Technologies for Reactive Oxygen Species: Fluorescence and Electrochemical Methods and Their Applications

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) have been found in plants, mammals, and natural environmental processes. The presence of ROS in mammals has been linked to the development of severe diseases, such as diabetes, cancer, tumors, and several neurodegenerative conditions. The most common ROS involved in human health are superoxide (O2•-), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and hydroxyl radicals (•OH). Organic and inorganic molecules have been integrated with various methods to detect and monitor ROS for understanding the effect of their presence and concentration on diseases caused by oxidative stress. Among several techniques, fluorescence and electrochemical methods have been recently developed and employed for the detection of ROS. This literature review intends to critically discuss the development of these techniques to date, as well as their application for in vitro and in vivo ROS detection regarding free-radical-related diseases. Moreover, important insights into and further steps for using fluorescence and electrochemical methods in the detection of ROS are presented.

Mesoporous NiO nanosphere: a sensitive strain sensor for determination of hydrogen peroxide

Exploring the sensitive and reliable methods for the determination of hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) is a crucial issue for the health and environmental challenges. Herein, we demonstrate a facile, but rational and effective solvothermal approach to the synthesis of hierarchical NiO mesoporous nanospheres (NiO-MNS) as an effective non-enzymatic sensor towards the H₂O₂ detection. Owing to the intercalation and stabilization effect of polyethylene glycol for the Ni(OH)₂ intermediate, the NiO mesoporous nanosphere (NiO-MNS) product is consistent with the low-dimensional nanostructured NiO blocks with large surface area and plentiful mesopores after the calcination treatment. The obtained NiO-MNS sensor presents superior electrochemical performance with a high sensitivity (236.7 μA mM⁻¹ cm⁻²) and low limit of detection (0.62 μM), as well as the good selectivity and reliability for the further application of H₂O₂ detection. In addition, the unraveling mechanism of the mesopores formation derived from the in situ measurements also offers the valuable guidance for the future design of porous materials for electrochemical devices and other applications.

The NiO mesoporous nanosphere constructing from the low-dimensional nanostructured NiO blocks presents the excellent electrochemical activity for H₂O₂ detection.
