New Quinoid Bio-Inspired Materials Using Para-Azaquinodimethane Moiety

Quinoid single molecules are regarded as promising materials for electronic applications due to their tunable chemical structure-driven properties. A series of three single bio-inspired quinoid materials containing para-azaquinodimethane (p-AQM) moiety were designed, synthesized and characterized. AQM1, AQM2 and AQM3, prepared using aldehydes derived from almonds, corncobs and cinnamon, respectively, were studied as promising quinoid materials for optoelectronic applications. The significance of facile synthetic procedures is highlighted through a straightforward two-step synthesis, using Knoevenagel condensation. The synthesized molecules showed molar extinction coefficients of 22,000, 32,000 and 61,000 L mol-1 cm-1, respectively, for AQM1, AQM2 and AQM3. The HOMO-LUMO energy gaps were calculated experimentally, theoretically showing the same trends: AQM3 < AQM2 < AQM1. The role of the aryl substituent was studied and showed an impact on the electronic properties. DFT calculations show planar structures with quinoidal bond length alternation, in agreement with the experimental results. Finally, these bio-based materials showed high thermal stabilities between 290 °C and 340 °C and a glassy behavior after the first heating-cooling scan. These results highlight these bio-based single molecules as potential candidates for electronic or biomedical applications.

Zn3Sb4O6F6 and KI-Doped Zn3Sb4O6F6: A Metal Oxyfluoride System for Photocatalytic Activity, Knoevenagel Condensation, and Bacterial Disinfection

Zn₃Sb₄O₆F₆ crystallites were synthesized by a pH-regulated hydrothermal synthetic approach, while doping on Zn₃Sb₄O₆F₆ by KI was performed by the "incipient wetness impregnation technique." The effect of KI in Zn₃Sb₄O₆F₆ is found with the changes in morphology in the doped compound, i.e., needle-shaped particles with respect to the irregular cuboid and granular shaped in the pure compound. Closer inspection of the powder diffraction pattern of doped compounds also reveals the shifting of Braggs' peaks toward a lower angle and the difference in cell parameters compared to the pure compound. Both metal oxyfluoride comprising lone pair elements and their doped compounds have been successfully applied as photocatalysts for methylene blue dye degradation. Knoevenagel condensation reactions were performed using Zn₃Sb₄O₆F₆ as the catalyst and confirmed 99% yield even at 60 °C temperature under solvent-free conditions. Both pure and KI-doped compounds were tested against several standard bacterial strains, i.e., Enterobacter sp., Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus sp., Salmonella sp., Bacillus sp., Proteous sp., Pseudomonas sp., and Klebsiella sp. by the "disk diffusion method" and their antimicrobial activities were confirmed.

A review of the recent progress on heterogeneous catalysts for Knoevenagel condensation

One of the most crucial attributes of synthetic organic chemistry is to design organic reactions under the facets of green chemistry for the sustainable production of chemicals. Thus, due to the intensified environmental and safety concern, the need for new technologies for conducting chemical transformation has grown. In this regard, there is enormous interest in the use of heterogeneous catalysts as they generally avoid the generation of waste, require fewer toxic reagents, as well as entail easier separation and recycling of the catalyst. α,β-Unsaturated acids have been widely used in various industrial applications and have been identified as one of the most promising chemicals obtained via the Knoevenagel condensation reaction. This review aims to discuss the most pertinent heterogeneous catalytic systems such as zeolites, mesoporous silica, ionic liquids, metal oxides, and graphitic carbon nitride-based catalysts in the Knoevenagel reaction. Ultimately, this review focuses not only on the catalyst but also provides an overall idea and guide for the preparation of new catalysts with outstanding properties by looking at the chemical and engineering aspects such as the reaction conditions and the mechanisms.

Hydroquinone and benzoquinone-catalyzed aqueous Knoevenagel condensation

A Knoevenagel condensation of various aldehydes with malononitrile effectively proceeded in the presence of hydroquinone/benzoquinone mixed catalysts at room temperature in H₂O. Furthermore, γ-deuterium-labeled α,β-unsaturated nitrile derivatives were also constructed via a deuteration of an aliphatic aldehyde in D₂O using a basic resin and the subsequent Knoevenagel condensation.

Synthesis and investigation of physico-chemical properties of dicationic ionic liquids

A series of dicationic ionic liquids (ILs) including [C4(MIM)2][PF6]2, [C5(MIM)2][PF6]2, [C6(MIM)2][PF6]2 and [C4(PYR)2][PF6]2 were synthesized. Their thermal stability and melting points were analysed. It was found that dicationic ILs presented important implications in the design of homogeneous and heterogeneous system with water. A homogeneous system of dicationic ILs with water could be formed at a relatively high temperature and then a heterogeneous system was formed when the solution was cooled to a low temperature. The ILs recovered by altering the temperature were obtained in high percentage yields of [C4(MIM)2][PF6]2 (97.6%), [C5(MIM)2][PF6]2 (97.3%), [C6(MIM)2][PF6]2 (98.0%) and [C4(PYR)2][PF6]2 (94.2%). On the other hand, [C4(MIM)2][PF6]2 and [C5(MIM)2][PF6]2 exhibited good solubility in acetonitrile and acetone. A homogeneous system could be achieved with imidazolium-based ILs with a relatively low amount of water and acetonitrile at room temperature. All of the properties of dicationic ILs have a strong correlation with the nature of dications, the linkage chain and the symmetry of dications. Dicationic ILs may provide a new opportunity for some specific applications in order to enable the effective separation and isolation of products.

DABCO-catalyzed Knoevenagel condensation of aldehydes with ethyl cyanoacetate using hydroxy ionic liquid as a promoter

N-(2-Hydroxy-ethyl)-pyridinium chloride ([HyEtPy]Cl) was synthesized and explored as a novel promoter for 1,4-diazabicyclo [2.2.2] octane (DABCO)-catalyzed Knoevenagel condensation reactions, which showed better catalytic activity compared to other ionic liquid (IL) that had no hydroxyl group attached to the IL scaffold. The effect of hydrogen bond formation between the hydroxyl group of [HyEtPy]Cl and the carbonyl group of aldehyde played an important role in the Knoevenagel condensation reaction. In the [HyEtPy]Cl–H₂O–DABCO composite system, Knoevenagel condensation reactions proceeded smoothly and cleanly, and the corresponding Knoevenagel condensation products were obtained in good to excellent yields in all cases examined. This protocol provides a versatile solvent–catalyst system, which has notable advantages such as being eco-friendly, ease of work-up and convenient reuse of the ionic liquid.
