Polysaccharide/mesoporous silica nanoparticle-based drug delivery systems: A review

Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) have been well-researched in the design and fabrication of advanced drug delivery systems (DDSs) due to their advantages such as good biocompatibility, large specific surface area and pore volume for drug loading, easily surface modification, adjusted size and good thermal/chemical stability. For MSN-based DDSs, gate materials are also necessary. And natural polysaccharides, one kind of the most abundant natural resource, have been widely applied as the "gatekeepers" in MSN-based DDSs. Polysaccharides are cheap and rich in sources with good biocompatibility, and some of them have important biological functions. In this review article, polysaccharides including chitosan, hyaluronic acid, sodium alginate and dextran, et al. are briefly introduced. And the preparation processes and properties such as controlled drug release, cancer targeting and disease diagnosis of functional polysaccharide/MSN-based DDSs are discussed.

Recent nanotheranostics applications for cancer therapy and diagnosis: A review

Nanotheranostics has attracted much attention due to its widespread application in molecular imaging and cancer therapy. Molecular imaging using nanoparticles has attracted special attention in the diagnosis of cancer at early stages. With the progress made in nanotheranostics, studying drug release, accumulation in the target tissue, biodistribution, and treatment effectiveness are other important factors. However, according to the studies conducted in this regard, each nanoparticle has some advantages and limitations that should be examined and then used in clinical applications. The main goal of this review is to explore the recent advancements in nanotheranostics for cancer therapy and diagnosis. Then, it is attempted to present recent studies on nanotheranostics used as a contrast agent in various imaging modalities and a platform for cancer therapy.

Anti-escaping of incident laser in rare-earth doped fluoride ceramics with glass forming layer

Adaptive fluoride ceramic with glass forming layer (GC_ZBL-Er) used in laser anti-escaping has been prepared by one-step synthesis, and the thickness of glass layer is identified as ~0.41 mm. Blue, green and red emissions of Er³⁺/Yb³⁺ codoped fluoride ceramic (C_ZBL-Er) and glass layer (G_ZBL-Er) have been investigated under ~980 nm laser pumping. With the forming of thin glass layer on ceramic surface, the absorption intensities on diffuse reflection of GC_ZBL-Er at 974 nm and 1.53 μm increase by 48% and 53% than those of C_ZBL-Er. Excited by a 979 nm laser, the presence of the glass layer increases the absolute absorption rate in spectral power from 75% in C_ZBL-Er to 83% in GC_ZBL-Er, which is consistent with the improvement in the absorbed photon number. In addition, the quantum yield of GC_ZBL-Er complex is raised by 28.4% compared to the case of ceramic substrate by photon quantification. Intense absorption-conversion ability and efficient macroscopical anti-escaping effect confirm the superiority of ingenious structure in the fluoride ceramics with glass forming layer, which provides a new approach for developing the absorption-conversion materials of anti-NIR laser detection.
