Abstract
Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) gas plays a significant role in biological regulation. With advancements in technology, H2S has been discovered across diverse fields, necessitating a comprehensive understanding of its physiological functions through monitoring changes in H2S within complex environments and physiological processes. In this study, we designed a phosphofluorene-based conjugate probe PPF-CDNB with an asymmetric π-conjugated phosphine structure and utilized dinitrophenyl ether as the recognition site for H2S. PPF-CDNB exhibited exceptional resistance to interference and demonstrated stability over a broad pH range (3.0-10.0), making it suitable for various environmental conditions. Intracellular experiments revealed that PPF-CDNB effectively monitored both endogenous and exogenous levels of H2S.

Abstract
Four hemicyanine probes for selectively detecting sulfites (HSO3−/SO32−) have been constructed by the condensation reaction of 7-substituted (CN, Br, H and OH) phenothiazine aldehyde with 1-ethyl-2,3,3-trimethylindolium iodide. All four probes show a fast and sensitive response to HSO3−/SO32−via a Michael addition, with a detection limit lower than 40 nM based on monitoring their UV/vis absorption changes. Although all four probes display an increase in fluorescence when responding to HSO3−/SO32−, the increment is larger for the probe with an electron-withdrawing group than the probe with an electron-donating group, except for Br. Thus, among four probes the 7-cyano probe (PI-CN) possesses the largest fluorescent response to HSO3−/SO32−, and the lowest detection limit (7.5 nM). More expediently and easily, a film and a test paper with PI-CN have been prepared to detect HSO3−/SO32− in a sample aqueous solution selectively. Finally, the detection of HSO3−/SO32− by PI-CN in biological environments has been demonstrated by cell imaging. Four 7-substituted phenothiazine hemicyanines display a substituent effect on the fluorescence response toward sulfites. The CN-substituted probe exhibits the best sensing behavior.![]()

Abstract
Hydrosulphite (HSO3 - ), as a common and important chemical reagent, is widely used in everyday life, however excessive use and abuse of HSO3 - can cause potential harmful effects on the environment and in biological health. In this paper, we describe the design and preparation of a colorimetric and ratiometric fluorescence probe for the visual detection of HSO3 - (excitation wavelengths were, respectively, 336 nm and 520 nm). This method showed some advantages including simple preparation, high selectivity, fast response, and significant colour and fluorescence ratio (F450 /F594 ) changes in the presence of HSO3 - . In addition, this probe was used successfully for the detection of HSO3 - in real water samples and showed a good recovery rate range.

Abstract
RSSs (reactive sulfur species) and their metabolites, such as H2S, Sn2-, SO32-/HSO3-, S2O42- and S2O52- (Reactive Inorganic Sulfur Species, RISSs), play a crucial role in the cushion against oxidative stress and the other physiological events. The molecular mechanisms how they affect cellular signaling and other physiological events remain largely unknown. To address their physiological functions, the techniques that can track their levels should be invaluable. Herein, six coumarin hemicyanine scaffolds (CH-RISSs) were synthesized and their fast and strong responses upon H2S, Sn2-, SO32-, HSO3-, S2O42- and S2O52- (Reactive Inorganic Sulfur Species, RISSs) were clarified in the absorption (colorimetric) and fluorescence (ratiometric) spectra, which showed good stability in the physiological pH (7.4). Upon the analytes, the maxima absorption of CH-RISSs switched from ~580 nm to ~400 nm in the absorption spectra. The fluorescence of CH-RISSs depleted at 650-660 nm and increased at 480-505 nm upon the RISSs. Both of coumarin hemicyanine structures with C12 alkyl chain (CH-RISS-3 and CH-RISS-6) showed quick and robust ratiometric fluorescence switch in the living cell imaging. Access to the fluorescent probes for RISSs sets the stage for applying the developing technologies to probe reactive sulfur biology in living systems.

Abstract
Key roles of bisulfite (HSO3 -) in food quality assurance and human health necessitate a reliable analytical method for rapid, sensitive, and selective detection of HSO3 -. Herein, a new red-emitting ratiometric fluorescence probe, BIQ, is reported for sensitive and selective detection of HSO3 - in food samples and live animals. Probe BIQ recognizes HSO3 - via a 1,4-nucleophilic addition reaction. As a result of this specific reaction, emission intensities at 625 and 475 nm are dramatically changed, allowing the detection of HSO3 - in a ratiometric fluorescence model in an aqueous solution. The obvious changes of solution color from pink to transparent and fluorescence color from rose-red to cyan allow the detection of HSO3 - by naked eyes. Furthermore, probe BIQ has fast response in color and fluorescence (<2 min), excellent selectivity, and a low detection limit (0.29 μM), which enables its application in HSO3 - detection in food samples and live organisms. The practical applications of probe BIQ are then demonstrated by the visualization of HSO3 - in live animals (zebrafish and nude mouse) as well as the determination of HSO3 - in white wine and sugar.

Abstract
Metal cations and anions are essential for versatile physiological processes. Dysregulation of specific ion levels in living organisms is known to have an adverse effect on normal biological events. Owing to the pathophysiological significance of ions, sensitive and selective methods to detect these species in biological systems are in high demand. Because they can be used in methods for precise and quantitative analysis of ions, organic dye-based ratiometric fluorescent probes have been extensively explored in recent years. In this review, recent advances (2015-2019) made in the development and biological applications of synthetic ratiometric fluorescent probes are described. Particular emphasis is given to organic dye-based ratiometric fluorescent probes that are designed to detect biologically important and relevant ions in cells and living organisms. Also, the fundamental principles associated with the design of ratiometric fluorescent probes and perspectives about how to expand their biological applications are discussed.

Abstract
The content of sulfur dioxide derivatives in cells is closely related to life and health. Therefore, it is essential to detect the content of sulfur dioxide derivatives in cells under physiological conditions to ensure life and health. In this paper, a novel sulfur dioxide derivative fluorescent water-soluble probe ((E)-1,1,3-trimethyl-2-(2-(naphthalen-1-yl)vinyl)-1H-3λ4-benzo[e]indole, TNB) was synthesized by using naphthalene formaldehyde (1) and 1,1,2,3-tetramethyl-1H-3λ4-benzo[e]indole (2) as raw materials. Based on the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) mechanism of the naphthalene ring to benzoindole, TNB exhibits very weak fluorescence emission in PBS buffer (pH 7.4). The olefin unit of TNB can be combined with HSO3-/SO32- with high selectivity to make the π-π conjugate interrupt. ICT is blocked, TNB produces a strong fluorescence emission, and the color visible to the naked eye changes from yellow to colorless. The effect of TNB on HSO3-/SO32- can be completed in 40 s, the fluorescence intensity is increased by 91 times, and the detection limit is as low as 0.089 μM. It is expected to be able to rapidly detect low levels of sulfur dioxide derivatives in cells, which has important application prospects in maintaining life and health.

Abstract
The development of new methods for rapid and effective detection of bisulfite (HSO3-) in food samples and imaging of HSO3- intake in animals is of significant importance due to the key roles of HSO3- in food quality assurance and community health. In this work, a new responsive fluorescence probe, EQC, is reported for the quantitative detection of HSO3- in food samples and visualization of HSO3- intake in animals. Upon addition of HSO3-, the UV-vis absorption and red emission of EQC were significantly decreased within 120 s. The changes in absorption and emission spectra of EQC were rationalized by theoretical computations. The proposed reaction mechanism of EQC with HSO3- was confirmed by high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) and spectroscopic titration measurements. EQC has the advantages of high sensitivity, selectivity (a detection limit of 18.1 nM), and fast response toward HSO3-, which enable rapid and effective HSO3- detection in buffer solution. The practical applications of EQC were demonstrated by the detection of HSO3- in food samples and the imaging of HSO3- intake in live animals.

Abstract
A novel imidazo[1,5-a]pyridine-hemicyanine based ratiometric fluorescent probe for detection of mitochondrial SO2 was designed and synthesized. The probe is based on a fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) mechanism. It exhibits high selectivity and sensitivity towards SO32− with a fast response time (3 min) and detection limit of 0.13 μM. Further, it showed low cytotoxicity and was successfully applied to image exogenous mitochondrial SO2 in cells. A novel imidazo[1,5-a]pyridine-hemicyanine based ratiometric fluorescent probe for detection of mitochondrial SO2 was designed and synthesized.![]()

Abstract
A new type of turn-on fluorescent probe CF-AC for the detection of Cys was firstly reported. The probe exhibited an excellent response to Cys with high selectively and sensitivity. In the presence of Cys, two fluorescence emission peaks at 525 nm and 650 nm appeared accompanied by the fluorescence color change from blue to red. Morever, the probe had good biocompatibility and could be successfully used for fluorescence imaging of Cys in MCF-7 cells.
