A partial oxidation-based approach to the synthesis of gold-magnetite hybrid nanostructures

Hybrid nanostructures composed of gold and magnetite are of singular interest because they allow the integration of plasmonic and magnetic properties in a single object. Due to this feature, their application has been proposed to perform various functions. The methods usually employed to prepare these particular kinds of nanostructures follow organic phase routes, whereas synthetic methodologies that employ more sustainable solvents have been much less explored. In this work, an environmentally friendly approach for the synthesis of gold-magnetite hybrid nanostructures in aqueous media is proposed. This approach relies on the partial oxidation of the Fe(II) precursor using hydrogen peroxide as the oxidizing agent in the presence of preformed gold nanoparticles dispersed in the reaction medium. The methodology used led to the formation of magnetite nanoparticles with a good stoichiometry and a median size of 30 nm. Furthermore, in the presence of gold nanoparticles in the reaction medium, the formation of gold-magnetite hybrid nanostructures is produced as a consequence of the heterogeneous nucleation of the iron oxide phase on the surface of the gold nanoparticles that act as seeds. The approach reported broadens the possibility of synthesizing hybrid nanostructures in aqueous media with integrated plasmonic and magnetic properties.

Non-Noble Plasmonic Metal-Based Photocatalysts

Solar-to-chemical energy conversion via heterogeneous photocatalysis is one of the sustainable approaches to tackle the growing environmental and energy challenges. Among various promising photocatalytic materials, plasmonic-driven photocatalysts feature prominent solar-driven surface plasmon resonance (SPR). Non-noble plasmonic metals (NNPMs)-based photocatalysts have been identified as a unique alternative to noble metal-based ones due to their advantages like earth-abundance, cost-effectiveness, and large-scale application capability. This review comprehensively summarizes the most recent advances in the synthesis, characterization, and properties of NNPMs-based photocatalysts. After introducing the fundamental principles of SPR, the attributes and functionalities of NNPMs in governing surface/interfacial photocatalytic processes are presented. Next, the utilization of NNPMs-based photocatalytic materials for the removal of pollutants, water splitting, CO₂ reduction, and organic transformations is discussed. The review concludes with current challenges and perspectives in advancing the NNPMs-based photocatalysts, which are timely and important to plasmon-based photocatalysis, a truly interdisciplinary field across materials science, chemistry, and physics.

Mechanistic Insights into Photocatalyzed Hydrogen Desorption from Palladium Surfaces Assisted by Localized Surface Plasmon Resonances

Nanoparticles synthesized from plasmonic metals can absorb low-energy light, producing an oscillation/excitation of their valence electron density that can be utilized in chemical conversions. For example, heterogeneous photocatalysis can be achieved within heterometallic antenna-reactor complexes (HMARCs), by coupling a reactive center at which a chemical reaction occurs to a plasmonic nanoparticle that acts as a light-absorbing antenna. For example, HMARCs composed of aluminum antennae and palladium (Pd) reactive centers have been demonstrated recently to catalyze selective hydrogenation of acetylene to ethylene. Here, we explore within a theoretical framework the rate-limiting step of hydrogen photodesorption from a Pd surface-crucial to achieving partial rather than full hydrogenation of acetylene-to understand the mechanism behind the photodesorption process within the HMARC assembly. To properly describe electronic excited states of the metal-molecule system, we employ embedded complete active space self-consistent field and n-electron valence state perturbation theory to second order within density functional embedding theory. The results of these calculations reveal that the photodesorption mechanism does not create a frequently invoked transient negative ion species but instead enhances population of available excited-state, low-barrier pathways that exhibit negligible charge-transfer character.
