Heterobimetallic Pd-K carbene complexes via one-electron reductions of palladium radical carbenes

Comparative study of CO2 insertion into pincer supported palladium alkyl and aryl complexes

The insertion of CO2 into metal alkyl bonds is a crucial elementary step in transition metal-catalyzed processes for CO2 utilization. Here, we synthesize pincer-supported palladium complexes of the type (tBuPBP)Pd(alkyl) (tBuPBP = B(NCH2PtBu2)2C6H4-; alkyl = CH2CH3, CH2CH2CH3, CH2C6H5, and CH2-4-OMe-C6H4) and (tBuPBP)Pd(C6H5) and compare the rates of CO2 insertion into the palladium alkyl bonds to form metal carboxylate complexes. Although, the rate constant for CO2 insertion into (tBuPBP)Pd(CH2CH3) is more than double the rate constant we previously measured for insertion into the palladium methyl complex (tBuPBP)Pd(CH3), insertion into (tBuPBP)Pd(CH2CH2CH3) occurs approximately one order of magnitude slower than (tBuPBP)Pd(CH3). CO2 insertion into the benzyl complexes (tBuPBP)Pd(CH2C6H5) and (tBuPBP)Pd(CH2-4-OMe-C6H4) is significantly slower than any of the n-alkyl complexes, and CO2 does not insert into the palladium phenyl bond of (tBuPBP)Pd(C6H5). While (tBuPBP)Pd(CH2CH3) and (tBuPBP)Pd(CH2CH2CH3) are resistant to β-hydride elimination, we were unable to synthesize complexes with n-butyl, iso-propyl, and tert-butyl ligands due to β-hydride elimination and an unusual reductive coupling, which involves the formation of new C-B bonds. This reductive process also occurred for (tBuPBP)Pd(CH2C6H5) at elevated temperature and a related process involving the formation of a new H-B bond prevented the isolation of (tBuPBP)PdH. DFT calculations provide insight into the relative rates of CO2 insertion and indicate that steric factors are critical. Overall, this work is one of the first comparative studies of the rates of CO2 insertion into different metal alkyl bonds and provides fundamental information that may be important for the development of new catalysts for CO2 utilization.

Carbene Radicals in Transition-Metal-Catalyzed Reactions

Discovered as organometallic curiosities in the 1970s, carbene radicals have become a staple in modern-day homogeneous catalysis. Carbene radicals exhibit nucleophilic radical-type reactivity orthogonal to classical electrophilic diamagnetic Fischer carbenes. Their successful catalytic application has led to the synthesis of a myriad of carbo- and heterocycles, ranging from simple cyclopropanes to more challenging eight-membered rings. The field has matured to employ densely functionalized chiral porphyrin-based platforms that exhibit high enantio-, regio-, and stereoselectivity. Thus far the focus has largely been on cobalt-based systems, but interest has been growing for the past few years to expand the application of carbene radicals to other transition metals. This Perspective covers the advances made since 2011 and gives an overview on the coordination chemistry, reactivity, and catalytic application of carbene radical species using transition metal complexes and catalysts.

A boron, nitrogen-containing heterocyclic carbene (BNC) as a redox active ligand: synthesis and characterization of a lithium BNC-aurate complex

Stabilization of low oxidation gold anions as aurate or auride by organic ligands has long been a synthetic challenge, owing to the proneness of low-valent gold centres to cluster. Despite being the most electronegative metal, isolable gold(I) aurate complexes have only been obtained from a few σ-withdrawing organo- and organo-main group ligands. Stabilization of highly-reduced gold complexes by π-modulating redox active ligands has only been achieved by cyclic (amino)(alkyl)carbene (CAAC), which is limited to 1e^--reduction to form neutral gold(0) complexes. This work reports a simple modular synthesis of a boron, nitrogen-containing heterocyclic carbene (^ClBNC) at a gold(I) center through metal-assisted coupling between azadiboriridine and isocyanides. The anionic electrophilic ^ClBNC ligand in the gold(I) complex [(^ClBNC)AuPMe₃] (3a and 3b) allows a 2e^--reduction to form the first η¹-carbene aurate complex [(BNC)AuPMe₃]Li(DME) (5a, DME = dimethoxyethane). Single crystal crystallographic analysis and computational studies of these complexes revealed a highly π-withdrawing character of the neutral 4π B,N-heterocyclic carbene (BNC) moiety and a 6π weakly aromatic character with π-donating properties to the gold(I) fragment in its reduced form, showcasing the first cyclic carbene ligand that allows electronic tunability between π-withdrawing (Fischer-type)- and π-donating (Schrock-type) properties.

Access to and Reactivity of Fe0 , Fe-I , FeI , and FeII PCcarbene P Pincer Complexes

Despite their promising metal-ligand cooperative reactivity, PC_carbene P pincer ligands are rarely reported for first-row transition-metal centres. Using a dehydration methodology, we report access to an Fe⁰ PC_carbene P pincer complex (1) that proceeds via an isolated α-hydroxylalkyl hydrido complex (3). Reversible carbonyl migration to the carbene position in 1 is found to allow coordination chemistry and E-H bond addition (E=H, B, Cl) across the iron-carbene linkage, representing a unique mechanism for metal-ligand cooperativity. The PC_carbene P pincer ligand is also found to stabilize formal Fe^II , Fe^I , and Fe^-I oxidation states, as demonstrated with synthesis and characterization of the complexes [11-X][BAr^F ₂₀ ] (X=Br, I), 12, and K[13]. Compound K[13] is found to be highly reactive, and abstracts hydrogen from a range of aliphatic C-H sources. Computational analysis by DFT suggests that the formal Fe^I and Fe^-I complexes contain significant carbene radical character. The ability of the PC_carbene P ligand scaffold to partake in metal-ligand cooperativity and to support a range of iron oxidation states renders it as potentially useful in many catalytic applications.

Ln(ii) and Ca(ii) NCsp3N pincer type diarylmethanido complexes – promising catalysts for C–C and C–E (E = Si, P, N, S) bond formation

The first examples of Ln(ii) (Ln = Yb, Sm) and Ca [NC_sp3N] pincer type diarylmethanido complexes were synthesized and successfully used as efficient and selective precatalyst for intermolecular C–C and C–E bond formation.

Selective Carbanion-Pyridine Coordination of a Reactive P,N Ligand to RhI

Ligands with reactive carbon sites in the periphery of a metal center have emerged as a powerful approach for metal-ligand bond activation. These reactive carbon sites are commonly generated by deprotonation strategies. Carbon-silicon bond cleavage is a potential alternative to access such constructs. Herein, the monodesilylation of bis-silyl-substituted P,N scaffold PNSi2 in the coordination sphere of [RhI (Cl)(CO)(PNSi2 )] (1) with sodium azide is disclosed. This affords a unique dinucleating anionic κ2 -C,N-κ1 -P ligand with a carbanionic methine carbon atom directly bound to rhodium as part of a four-membered Rh-N-C-C rhodacycle. This dimer undergoes meta-pyridine C-H activation facilitated by weak bases, which leads to a desymmetrization of the system and provides a σ,π-bridging 3-pyridyl fragment bound to RhI . The facile Si-C cleavage strategy may pave the way to studying the reactivity and functionalization of a variety of κ2 -C,N-coordinated pyridine scaffolds for selective transformations.

Synthesis and reactivity of a PCcarbeneP cobalt(i) complex: the missing link in the cobalt PXP pincer series (X = B, C, N)

We report the first example of a cobalt PC_carbeneP pincer complex (1) featuring a central alkylidene carbon donor accessed through the dehydration of an alcoholic POP proligand.

We report the first example of a cobalt PC_carbeneP pincer complex (1) featuring a central alkylidene carbon donor accessed through the dehydration of an alcoholic POP proligand. Complex 1 shares bonding similarities with cobalt PBP and PNP pincer complexes where the donor atom engages in π-bonding with the cobalt centre, and thus completes the PXP (X = B, C, N) pincer ligand series for cobalt (for X donors that partake in M–L π-bonding). As compared to PBP and PNP pincer complexes, which are known to be good hydride and proton acceptors (respectively), complex 1 is found to be an effective hydrogen atom acceptor. Complex 1 partakes in cooperative ligand reactivity, engaging in several small molecule activations with styrene, bromine, carbon disulphide, phenyl acetylene, acetonitrile, hydrogen, benzaldehyde and water (through microreversibility). The mechanism for the formation of complex 1 is studied through the isolation and computational analysis of key intermediates. The formation of 1 is found to avoid C–H activation of the proligand, and instead proceeds through a combination of O–H activation, hydrogen atom transfer, β-hydride elimination and hydrogen activation processes.
