On thermodynamic inconsistencies in several photosynthetic and solar cell models and how to fix them

Light-Harvesting Efficiency Cannot Depend on Optical Coherence in the Absence of Orientational Order

The coherence of light has been proposed as a quantum-mechanical control for enhancing light-harvesting efficiency. In particular, optical coherence can be manipulated by changing either the polarization state or the spectral phase of the light. Here, we show that, in weak light, light-harvesting efficiency cannot be controlled using any form of optical coherence in molecular light-harvesting systems and, more broadly, those comprising orientationally disordered subunits and operating on longer-than-ultrafast time scales. Under those conditions, optical coherence does not affect the light-harvesting efficiency, meaning that it cannot be used for control. Specifically, polarization-state control is lost in disordered samples or when the molecules reorient on the time scales of light harvesting, and spectral-phase control is lost when the efficiency is time-averaged over a period longer than the optical coherence time. In practice, efficiency is always averaged over long times, meaning that coherent optical control is only possible through polarization and only in systems with orientational order.

Quantum photocells as nonequilibrium systems

Numerous nanoscale studies that are related to harnessing photon energy focus on quantum effects. Thermodynamics analyses indicate the occurrence of a paradox for the standard model of the photocell with the power generated by a decay process. In order to measure the power accurately, a light-harvesting system connecting to Fermi contacts is proposed. Results show that the interference effect between different transition channels plays a decisive role in enhancing the power output of a photocell. The proposed model may provide a foundation for the future development of photoelectric converters.

A Theoretical Perspective of the Photochemical Potential in the Spectral Performance of Photovoltaic Cells

We present a novel theoretical approach to the problem of light energy conversion in thermostated semiconductor junctions. Using the classical model of a two-level atom, we deduced formulas for the spectral response and the quantum efficiency in terms of the input photons' non-zero chemical potential. We also calculated the spectral entropy production and the global efficiency parameter in the thermodynamic limit. The heat transferred to the thermostat results in a dissipative loss that appreciably controls the spectral quantities' behavior and, therefore, the cell's performance. The application of the obtained formulas to data extracted from photovoltaic cells enabled us to accurately interpolate experimental data for the spectral response and the quantum efficiency of cells based on Si-, GaAs, and CdTe, among others.

Analysis of Photosynthetic Systems and Their Applications with Mathematical and Computational Models

In biological and life science applications, photosynthesis is an important process that involves the absorption and transformation of sunlight into chemical energy. During the photosynthesis process, the light photons are captured by the green chlorophyll pigments in their photosynthetic antennae and further funneled to the reaction center. One of the most important light harvesting complexes that are highly important in the study of photosynthesis is the membrane-attached Fenna–Matthews–Olson (FMO) complex found in the green sulfur bacteria. In this review, we discuss the mathematical formulations and computational modeling of some of the light harvesting complexes including FMO. The most recent research developments in the photosynthetic light harvesting complexes are thoroughly discussed. The theoretical background related to the spectral density, quantum coherence and density functional theory has been elaborated. Furthermore, details about the transfer and excitation of energy in different sites of the FMO complex along with other vital photosynthetic light harvesting complexes have also been provided. Finally, we conclude this review by providing the current and potential applications in environmental science, energy, health and medicine, where such mathematical and computational studies of the photosynthesis and the light harvesting complexes can be readily integrated.

Geometric phaselike effects in a quantum heat engine

By periodically driving the temperature of reservoirs in a quantum heat engine, geometric or Pancharatnam-Berry phaselike (PBp) effects in the thermodynamics can be observed. The PBp can be identified from a generating function (GF) method within an adiabatic quantum Markovian master equation formalism. The GF is shown not to lead to a standard open quantum system's fluctuation theorem in the presence of phase-different modulations with an inapplicability in the use of large deviation theory. Effect of quantum coherences in optimizing the flux is nullified due to PBp contributions. The linear coefficient, 1/2, which is universal in the expansion of the efficiency at maximum power in terms of Carnot efficiency no longer holds true in the presence of PBp effects.

On the performance of a photosystem II reaction centre-based photocell

The photosystem II reaction centre is the photosynthetic complex responsible for oxygen production on Earth. Its water splitting function is particularly favoured by the formation of a stable charge separated state via a pathway that starts at an accessory chlorophyll. Here we envision a photovoltaic device that places one of these complexes between electrodes and investigate how the mean current and its fluctuations depend on the microscopic interactions underlying charge separation in the pathway considered. Our results indicate that coupling to well resolved vibrational modes does not necessarily offer an advantage in terms of power output but can lead to photo-currents with suppressed noise levels characterizing a multi-step ordered transport process. Besides giving insight into the suitability of these complexes for molecular-scale photovoltaics, our work suggests a new possible biological function for the vibrational environment of photosynthetic reaction centres, namely, to reduce the intrinsic current noise for regulatory processes.
