Abstract
Giant magnetoelectric coupling and magnetic-field-induced spin state trapping (MIESST) were recently reported in spin crossover materials with polar phases. We discuss these phenomena considering the distinct contributions of the change of the molecular spin state, driven by the magnetic field, and the coupled structural symmetry-breaking during the stepwise change of electric polarisation or MIESST.

Abstract
Spin crossover (SCO) materials that possess switchable and cooperative fluorescence have long focused interest in photonic sensor devices to monitor the variations in the physicochemical parameters of the external environment. However, the lack of quantified cooperativity for the SCO transition operating in isolated molecules is detrimental to short-term technological applications. In this study, a pretwisted energy D-A system combining the deep-blue naphthalimide fluorophore (donor) and the FeN6 SCO chromophore (switchable acceptor) has been developed with the formula of Fe(naph-abpt)2(NCS)2·2DMF (1), where naph-abpt is N-[3,5-di(pyridin-2-yl)-4H-1,2,4-triazol-4-yl]-1,8-naphthalimide. Dual emission from the naphthalimide function based on its vibronic structure exhibits a different synergy effect with SCO, providing a new platform for ratiometric fluorescence thermosensing. Theoretical calculations and optical experimental results demonstrate an excellent correlation between luminescence intensity ratio signals and magnetic data of spin transition, promising a high sensitivity of the optical activity of the ligand to the spin state of the active iron(II) ions, with the maximum relative sensitivity as 0.7% K-1 around T1/2.

Abstract
Manipulating fluorescence by photo-switched spin-state conversions is an attractive prospect for applications in smart magneto-optical materials and devices. The challenge is how to modulate the energy transfer paths of the singlet excited state by light-induced spin-state conversions. In this work, a spin crossover (SCO) FeII-based fluorophore was embedded into a metal-organic framework (MOF) to tune the energy transfer paths. Compound 1 {Fe(TPA-diPy)[Ag(CN)2]2}·2EtOH (1) has an interpenetrated Hofmann-type structure, wherein the FeII ion is coordinated by a bidentate fluorophore ligand (TPA-diPy) and four cyanide nitrogen atoms and acts as the fluorescent-SCO unit. Magnetic susceptibility measurements revealed that 1 underwent an incomplete and gradual spin crossover with T1/2 = 161 K. Photomagnetic studies confirmed photo-induced spin state conversions between the low-spin (LS) and high-spin (HS) states, where the irradiation of 532 and 808 nm laser lights converted the LS and HS states to the HS and LS states, respectively. Variable-temperature fluorescence spectra study revealed an anomalous decrease in emission intensity upon the HS → LS transition, confirming the synergetic coupling between the fluorophore and SCO units. Alternating irradiation of 532 and 808 nm laser lights resulted in reversible fluorescence intensity changes, confirming spin state-controlled fluorescence in the SCO-MOF. Photo-monitored structural analyses and UV-vis spectroscopic studies demonstrated that the photo-induced spin state conversions changed energy transfer paths from the TPA fluorophore to the metal-centered charge transfer bands, ultimately leading to the switching of fluorescence intensities. This work represents a new prototype compound showing bidirectional photo-switched fluorescence by manipulating the spin states of iron(ii).

Abstract
A mononuclear complex [Fe(tBu2qsal)2] has been obtained by a reaction between an Fe(II) precursor salt and a tridentate ligand 2,4-di(tert-butyl)-6-((quinoline-8-ylimino)methyl)phenol (tBu2qsalH) in the presence of triethylamine. The complex exhibits a hysteretic spin transition at 117 K upon cooling and 129 K upon warming, as well as light-induced excited spin-state trapping at lower temperatures. Although the strongly cooperative spin transition suggests substantial intermolecular interactions, the complex is readily sublimable, as evidenced by the growth of its single crystals by sublimation at 573 → 373 K and ∼10-3 mbar. This seemingly antagonistic behavior is explained by the asymmetric coordination environment, in which the tBu substituents and quinoline moieties appear on opposite sides of the complex. As a result, the structure is partitioned in well-defined layers separated by van der Waals interactions between the tBu groups, while the efficient cooperative interactions within the layer are provided by the quinoline-based moieties. The abrupt spin transition is preserved in a 20 nm thin film prepared by sublimation, as evidenced by abrupt and hysteretic changes in the dielectric properties in the temperature range comparable to the one around which the spin transition is observed for the bulk material. The changes in the dielectric response are in excellent agreement with differences in the dielectric tensor of the low-spin and high-spin crystal structures evaluated by density functional theory calculations. The substantially higher volatility of [Fe(tBu2qsal)2], as compared to a similar complex without tBu substituents, suggests that asymmetric molecular shapes offer an efficient design strategy to achieve sublimable complexes with strongly cooperative spin transitions.

Abstract
We study by femtosecond optical pump-probe spectroscopy the photoinduced charge transfer (CT) in the RbMnFe Prussian blue analogue. Previous studies evidenced the local nature of the photoinduced MnIII FeII → MnII FeIII process, occurring within less than 1 ps. Here we show experimentally that two photoswitching pathways exist, depending on the excitation pump wavelength, which is confirmed by band structure calculations. Photoexcitation of α spins corresponds to the Mn(d-d) band, which drives reverse Jahn-Teller distortion through the population of antibonding Mn-N orbitals, and induces CT within ≈190 fs. The process launches coherent lattice torsion during the self-trapping of the CT small-polaron. Photoexcitation of β spins drives intervalence Fe→Mn CT towards non-bonding states and results in a slower dynamic.

Abstract
Time-resolved X-ray (Tr-XAS) and optical transient absorption (OTA) spectroscopy on the pico-microsecond timescale coupled with density functional theory calculations are applied to study the light-induced spin crossover processes of a Fe-based macrocyclic complex in solution. Tr-XAS analysis after light illumination shows the formation of a seven-coordinated high-spin quintet metastable state, which relaxes to a six-coordinated high-spin configuration before decaying to the ground state. Kinetic analysis of the macrocyclic complex reveals an unprecedented long-lived decay lifetime of approximately 42.6 μs. Comparative studies with a non-macrocyclic counterpart illustrate a significantly shortened approximately 568-fold decay lifetime of about 75 ns, and highlight the importance of the ligand arrangement in stabilizing the reactivity of the excited state. Lastly, OTA analysis shows the seven-coordinated high-spin state to be formed within approximately 6.2 ps. These findings provide a complete understanding of the spin crossover reaction and relaxation pathways of the macrocyclic complex, and reveal the importance of a flexible coordination environment for their rational design.

Abstract
Oligonuclear complexes of d4-d7 transition metal ion centers that undergo spin-switching have long been developed for their practical role in molecular electronics. Recently, they also have appeared as promising photochemical reactants demonstrating improved stability. However, the lack of knowledge about their photophysical properties in the solution phase compared to mononuclear complexes is currently hampering their inclusion into advanced light-driven reactions. In the present study, the ultrafast photoinduced dynamics in a solvated [2 × 2] iron(II) metallogrid complex are characterized by combining measurements with transient optical-infrared absorption and x-ray emission spectroscopy on the femtosecond time scale. The analysis is supported by density functional theory calculations. The photocycle can be described in terms of intra-site transitions, where the FeII centers in the low-spin state are independently photoexcited. The Franck-Condon state decays via the formation of a vibrationally hot high-spin (HS) state that displays coherent behavior within a few picoseconds and thermalizes within tens of picoseconds to yield a metastable HS state living for several hundreds of nanoseconds. Systematic comparison with the closely related mononuclear complex [Fe(terpy)2]2+ reveals that nuclearity has a profound impact on the photoinduced dynamics. More generally, this work provides guidelines for expanding the integration of oligonuclear complexes into new photoconversion schemes that may be triggered by ultrafast spin-switching.

Abstract
An atomistic understanding of the photoinduced spin-state switching (PSS) within polynuclear systems of d4-d7 transition metal ion complexes is required for their rational integration into light-driven reactions of chemical and biological interest. However, in contrast to mononuclear systems, the multidimensional dynamics of the PSS in solvated molecular arrays have not yet been elucidated due to the expected complications associated with the connectivity between the metal centers and the strong interactions with the surroundings. In this work, the PSS in a solvated triiron(II) metallogrid complex is characterized using transient optical absorption and X-ray emission spectroscopies on the femtosecond time scale. The complementary measurements reveal the photoinduced creation of energy-rich (hot) and long-lived quintet states, whose dynamics differ critically from their mononuclear congeners. This finding opens major prospects for developing novel schemes in solution-phase spin chemistry that are driven by the dynamic PSS process in compact oligometallic arrays.

Abstract
Magnetic recording using femtosecond laser pulses has recently been achieved in some dielectric media, showing potential for ultrafast data storage applications. Single-molecule magnets (SMMs) are metal complexes with two degenerate magnetic ground states and are promising for increasing storage density, but remain unexplored using ultrafast techniques. Here we have explored the dynamics occurring after photoexcitation of a trinuclear µ3-oxo-bridged Mn(III)-based SMM, whose magnetic anisotropy is closely related to the Jahn-Teller distortion. Ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy in solution reveals oscillations superimposed on the decay traces due to a vibrational wavepacket. Based on complementary measurements and calculations on the monomer Mn(acac)3, we conclude that the wavepacket motion in the trinuclear SMM is constrained along the Jahn-Teller axis due to the µ3-oxo and µ-oxime bridges. Our results provide new possibilities for optical control of the magnetization in SMMs on femtosecond timescales and open up new molecular-design challenges to control the wavepacket motion in the excited state of polynuclear transition-metal complexes.

Abstract
A computational study is presented in which two strategies of ligand modifications have been explored to invert the relative energy of the metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) and metal-centered (MC) state in Fe(II)-polypyridyl complexes. Replacing the bipyridines by stronger σ donors increases the ligand-field strength and pushes the MC state to higher energy, while the use of ligands with a larger π conjugation leads to lower MLCT energies.

Abstract
The emerging field of quantum information science promises to transform a diverse range of scientific fields, ranging from computation to sensing and metrology. The interdisciplinary scientific community laid the groundwork for the next generation of quantum technologies through key advances in understanding the fundamental unit of quantum information science, the qubit. Electronic spin is a promising platform for qubits, demonstrating suitably long coherence times, optical initialization, and single spin addressability. Herein, we discuss recent accomplishments and future progress from our group targeted at imbuing transition metal complexes with the aforementioned properties, creating a pathway to fusing spatial precision with long coherence times. A strong emphasis of this feature article is progressing towards single spin measurements via a chemical approach for imbuing molecular qubits with an optically-induced spin polarization mechanism.

Abstract
Charge transfer multiplet (CTM) theory is a computationally undemanding and highly mature method for simulating the soft X-ray spectra of first-row transition metal complexes. However, CTM theory has seldom been applied to the simulation of excited-state spectra. In this article, the CTM4XAS software package is extended to simulate M2,3- and L2,3-edge spectra for the excited states of first-row transition metals and also interpret CTM eigenfunctions in terms of Russell-Saunders term symbols. These new programs are used to reinterpret the recently reported excited-state M2,3-edge difference spectra of photogenerated ferrocenium cations and to propose alternative assignments for the electronic state of these cations responsible for the spectroscopic features. These new programs were also used to model the L2,3-edge spectra of FeII compounds during nuclear relaxation following photoinduced spin crossover and to propose spectroscopic signatures for their vibrationally hot states.

Abstract
Spectroscopically following charge carrier dynamics in catalytic materials has proven to be a difficult task due to the ultrafast timescales involved in charge trapping and the lack of spectroscopic tools available to selectively probe surface electronic structure. Transient extreme ultraviolet reflection-absorption (XUV-RA) spectroscopy is able to follow surface electron dynamics due to its element, oxidation-state, and surface specificity, as well as the ultrafast time-resolution which can be achieved with XUV pulses produced by high harmonic generation. Here, we use ultrafast XUV-RA spectroscopy to show that charge localization and small polaron formation in Fe2O3 occur within ∼660 fs. The photoexcitation of hematite at 400 nm initially leads to an electronically-delocalized ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) state, which subsequently evolves into a surface localized LMCT state. Comparison of the charge carrier dynamics for single and polycrystalline samples shows that the observed dynamics are negligibly influenced by grain boundaries and surface defects. Rather, correlation between experimental results and spectral simulations reveals that the lattice expansion during small polaron formation occurs on the identical time scale as surface trapping and represents the probable driving force for sub-ps electron localization to the hematite surface.
