Enhancing and reducing chirality by opposite circularly-polarized light irradiation on crystalline chiral domains consisting of nonchiral photoresponsive W-shaped liquid crystal molecules

Circularly Polarized Light Responsive Materials: Design Strategies and Applications

Circularly polarized light (CPL) with the end of optical vector traveling along circumferential trajectory shows left- and right-handedness, which transmits chiral information to materials via complicated CPL-matter interactions. Materials with circular dichroism respond to CPL illumination selectively with differential outputs that can be used to design novel photodetectors. Racemic or achiral compounds under CPL go through photodestruction, photoresolution, and asymmetric synthesis pathways to generate enantiomeric bias and optical activity. By this strategy, helical polymers and chiral inorganic plasmonic nanostructures are synthesized directly, and their intramolecular folding and subsequent self-assembly are photomodulable as well. In the aggregated state of self-assembly and liquid crystal phase, helical sense of the dynamic molecular packing is sensitive to enantiomeric bias brought by CPL, enabling the chiral amplification to supramolecular scale. In this review, the application-guided design strategies of CPL-responsive materials are aimed to be systematically summarized and discussed. Asymmetric synthesis, resolution, and property-modulation of small organic compounds, polymers, inorganic nanoparticles, supramolecular assemblies and liquid crystals are highlighted based on the important developments during the last decades. Besides, applications of light-matter interactions including CPL detection and biomedical applications are also referred.

Photoprogrammable Mesogenic Soft Helical Architectures: A Promising Avenue toward Future Chiro-Optics

Mesogenic soft materials, having single or multiple mesogen moieties per molecule, commonly exhibit typical self-organization characteristics, which promotes the formation of elegant helical superstructures or supramolecular assemblies in chiral environments. Such helical superstructures play key roles in the propagation of circularly polarized light and display optical properties with prominent handedness, that is, chiro-optical properties. The leveraging of light to program the chiro-optical properties of such mesogenic helical soft materials by homogeneously dispersing photosensitive chiral material into an achiral soft system or covalently connecting photochromic moieties to the molecules has attracted considerable attention in terms of materials, properties, and potential applications and has been a thriving topic in both fundamental science and application engineering. State-of-the-art technologies are described in terms of the material design, synthesis, properties, and modulation of photoprogrammable chiro-optical mesogenic soft helical architectures. Additionally, the scientific issues and technical problems that hinder further development of these materials for use in various fields are outlined and discussed. Such photoprogrammable mesogenic soft helical materials are competitive candidates for use in stimulus-controllable chiro-optical devices with high optical efficiency, stable optical properties, and easy miniaturization, facilitating the future integration and systemization of chiro-optical chips in photonics, photochemistry, biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, and beyond.

Circularly Polarized Luminescence in Nanoassemblies: Generation, Amplification, and Application

Currently, the development of circularly polarized luminescent (CPL) materials has drawn extensive attention due to the numerous potential applications in optical data storage, displays, backlights in 3D displays, and so on. While the fabrication of CPL-active materials generally requires chiral luminescent molecules, the introduction of the "self-assembly" concept offers a new perspective in obtaining the CPL-active materials. Following this approach, various self-assembled materials, including organic-, inorganic-, and hybrid systems can be endowed with CPL properties. Benefiting from the advantages of self-assembly, not only chiral molecules, but also achiral species, as well as inorganic nanoparticles have potential to be self-assembled into chiral nanoassemblies showing CPL activity. In addition, the dissymmetry factor, an important parameter of CPL materials, can be enhanced through various pathways of self-assembly. Here, the present status and progress of self-assembled nanomaterials with CPL activity are reviewed. An overview of the key factors in regulating chiral emission materials at the supramolecular level will largely boost their application in multidisciplinary fields.

Laser-induced formation of "craters" and "hills" in azobenzene-containing polymethacrylate films

Functional organic polymer materials with an ability to change their surface topography in response to external contactless stimuli, like light irradiation, have attracted considerable attention. This work is devoted to the study of contactless control of the surface topography and the formation of the surface features in the amorphousized and liquid crystalline films of two azobenzene-containing polymers. The investigated polymers are side-chain polymethacrylates containing azobenzene chromophores with two lateral methyl substituents in ortho-positions and differing in the length of flexible spacer with six and ten methylene units. Two lateral methyl substituents at the azobenzene chromophore ensure high photoresponses of these polymeric samples in the whole visible spectral range. Irradiation of the polymethacrylate films by focused polarized light of green (532 nm) and red (633 nm) lasers induces a specific photodeformation of the film surface. In the case of the green light formation of circular "craters" with anisotropic borders was found, whereas for the red light highly asymmetric "hills" were observed. The possible mechanisms of the surface topography formation and their features are discussed.

Binary Supramolecular Chirality "1/0" Switched by Hierarchical Photoisomerization of a Flower-Like Compound with a Binaphthol Core and Alkyl-Functionalized Azobenzene Side Chains

Chiral supramolecular assemblies are abundant in nature, but controlling the chirality of artificial systems still remains a challenge. In this work, we developed a system where supramolecular chirality can be controlled between chiral and achiral states, namely a chiral "1/0" switch using a flower-like azobenzene compound with a binaphthol core. Upon photoisomerization by ultraviolet irradiation, the terminal alkyl tails envelop the chiral "centre" with a reduction in the dihedral angle of the binaphthol moiety from 76.1° to 61.4°, like "closing petals". In the doped liquid crystal E7 matrix, this hierarchical conformational transition prevents the transfer of chirality to the host liquid crystal, resulting in a degradation from cholesteric phase (HTP value: 13.84 μm^-1 ) to an achiral nematic phase.

Chiral supramolecular organization from a sheet-like achiral gel: a study of chiral photoinduction

Chiral photoinduction in a photoresponsive gel based on an achiral 2D architecture with high geometric anisotropy and low roughness has been investigated. Circularly polarized light (CPL) was used as a chiral source and an azobenzene chromophore was employed as a chiral trigger. The chiral photoinduction was studied by evaluating the preferential excitation of enantiomeric conformers of the azobenzene units. Crystallographic data and density functional theory (DFT) calculations show how chirality is transferred to the achiral azomaterials as a result of the combination of chiral photochemistry and supramolecular interactions. This procedure could be applied to predict and estimate chirality transfer from a chiral physical source to a supramolecular organization using different light-responsive units.
