Self-similarity and vanishing diffusion in fluvial landscapes

Complex topographies exhibit universal properties when fluvial erosion dominates landscape evolution over other geomorphological processes. Similarly, we show that the solutions of a minimalist landscape evolution model display invariant behavior as the impact of soil diffusion diminishes compared to fluvial erosion at the landscape scale, yielding complete self-similarity with respect to a dimensionless channelization index. Approaching its zero limit, soil diffusion becomes confined to a region of vanishing area and large concavity or convexity, corresponding to the locus of the ridge and valley network. We demonstrate these results using one dimensional analytical solutions and two dimensional numerical simulations, supported by real-world topographic observations. Our findings on the landscape self-similarity and the localized diffusion resemble the self-similarity of turbulent flows and the role of viscous dissipation. Topographic singularities in the vanishing diffusion limit are suggestive of shock waves and singularities observed in nonlinear complex systems.

Modeling and live imaging of mechanical instabilities in the zebrafish aorta during hematopoiesis

All blood cells originate from hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells (HSPCs). HSPCs are formed from endothelial cells (ECs) of the dorsal aorta (DA), via endothelial-to-hematopoietic transition (EHT). The zebrafish is a primary model organism to study the process in vivo. While the role of mechanical stress in controlling gene expression promoting cell differentiation is actively investigated, mechanisms driving shape changes of the DA and individual ECs remain poorly understood. We address this problem by developing a new DA micromechanical model and applying it to experimental data on zebrafish morphogenesis. The model considers the DA as an isotropic tubular membrane subjected to hydrostatic blood pressure and axial stress. The DA evolution is described as a movement in the dimensionless controlling parameters space: normalized hydrostatic pressure and axial stress. We argue that HSPC production is accompanied by two mechanical instabilities arising in the system due to the plane stress in the DA walls and show how a complex interplay between mechanical forces in the system drives the emerging morphological changes.

Marginally compact fractal trees with semiflexibility

We study marginally compact macromolecular trees that are created by means of two different fractal generators. In doing so, we assume Gaussian statistics for the vectors connecting nodes of the trees. Moreover, we introduce bond-bond correlations that make the trees locally semiflexible. The symmetry of the structures allows an iterative construction of full sets of eigenmodes (notwithstanding the additional interactions that are present due to semiflexibility constraints), enabling us to get physical insights about the trees' behavior and to consider larger structures. Due to the local stiffness, the self-contact density gets drastically reduced.
