Bimetallic porous Mn/Co oxide nanosheets with efficient oxidase-mimicking activity for the sensitive colorimetric determination of resveratrol in different matrices

BACKGROUND

Resveratrol, a natural polyphenol compound used as an ingredient in dietary supplements, and pharmaceuticals, has gained significant attention due to its potential health benefits. However, the accurate and sensitive determination of resveratrol in complex matrices remains a challenge. In this study, we propose the utilization of bimetallic porous Mn/Co oxide nanosheets (MnCoO-NSs) as catalysts for the colorimetric determination of resveratrol.

RESULTS

The bimetallic porous MnCoO-NSs were prepared through a facile one-stone-two-birds strategy. These nanosheets exhibited superior oxidase-mimicking activity, as evidenced by the catalytic oxidation of the chromogenic substrate 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB), producing a blue-colored oxTMB species with a prominent absorbance peak at 655 nm. The catalytic activity was promoted through the production of superoxide anion (O2•-), which enhanced the affinity of MnCoO-NSs to the TMB molecules. Upon the addition of resveratrol, the oxidation process was inhibited, resulting in rapid fading of the blue color. This colorimetric sensing platform exhibited a linear response to resveratrol concentrations over the range of 2.2-87.6 μM, with a limit of detection of 0.210 μM. The method was further applied for the determination of resveratrol in different matrices including biological fluids, pharmaceuticals, and environmental water.

SIGNIFICANCE

The utilization of these MnCoO-NSs offers a simple and cost-effective alternative to conventional analytical techniques for the determination of resveratrol. Their high sensitivity, selectivity, and stability enable accurate measurements of resveratrol in various complex matrices. This research has implications in areas such as pharmaceutical analysis, biomedical research, and environmental analysis, where the reliable determination of resveratrol is crucial for assessing its therapeutic potential and ensuring product quality.

A dual-mode ratiometric fluorescence and smartphone-assisted colorimetric sensing platform based on bifunctional Fe,Co-CQD for glucose analysis at physiological pH

Diabetes is a common and fatal chronic metabolic disease characterized by hyperglycemia, and thus monitoring blood glucose level is essential for early screening and timely control of disease. Herein, we have prepared the bifunctional iron and cobalt co-doped carbon quantum dot (Fe,Co-CQD) with good optical properties and peroxidase-mimetic catalytic activity toward specific substrate o-phenylenediamine (OPD) under alkaline condition. Glucose oxidase (GOx) specifically catalyzes the oxidation of glucose into H₂O₂, and Fe,Co-CQD subsequently triggers a reaction between H₂O₂ and OPD to form yellow product DAP with a distinct UV absorption peak at 420 nm. Simultaneously, the generated DAP also appears a well-defined fluorescence signal at 555 nm, which can suppress the intrinsic fluorescence peak of Fe,Co-CQD (439 nm) owing to the inner filter effect (IFE). Based on this principle, a dual-mode ratiometric fluorescence and colorimetric sensing platform has been constructed for glucose analysis at physiological pH, which reveals the advantages of excellent accuracy, high throughput, simple operation, and low cost. More importantly, a smartphone-assisted colorimetric sensing system based on a portable visual detection kit and a 3D printing smartphone-based device has been constructed, which enables on-site detection of glucose in complex serum samples without laboratory instruments, indicating its potential practical application prospect.

Synthesis of taurine-Cu3(PO4)2 hybrid nanoflower and their peroxidase-mimic and antimicrobial properties

Herein, we report the synthesis of taurine incorporated (sulfur containing organic molecule derived from methionine and cysteine) hybrid nanoflowers (thNFs) with an intrinsic peroxidase-mimic and antimicrobial activities in the presence of H₂O₂. Formation of thNFs using non-enzyme molecules was for the first time and systematically studied as a function of the taurine concentration, types of metal ions (Cu²⁺, Fe²⁺ and Fe³⁺) and pH values of reaction solution. The peroxidase like activities of thNFs rely on Fenton-like reaction against guaiacol used as a model substrate. The efficiency of Fenton reaction can be attributed to porous structure and presence of ions of transition elements in the thNFs. The thNFs were further characterized using FTIR, XRD, SEM and EDX. The thNFs also showed remarkable antimicrobial properties against S. aureus, E. coli, B. cereus and C. albicans. We claim that nonprotein-based NFs can be considered as new generation nano-biocatalysts as an alternative to enzymes and can be used in various medicinal, biochemical, immunological, biotechnological, and industrial applications.

Coupling Glucose-Assisted Cu(I)/Cu(II) Redox with Electrochemical Hydrogen Production

Water electrolysis is a sustainable technology for hydrogen production since this process can utilize the intermittent electricity generated by renewable energy such as solar, wind, and hydro. However, the large-scale application of this process is restricted by the high electricity consumption due to the large potential gap (>1.23 V) between the anodic oxygen evolution reaction and the cathodic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, a novel and efficient hydrogen production system is developed for coupling glucose-assisted Cu(I)/Cu(II) redox with HER. The onset potential of the electrooxidation of Cu(I) to Cu(II) is as low as 0.7 V_RHE (vs reversible hydrogen electrode). In situ Raman spectroscopy, ex situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculation demonstrates that glucose in the electrolyte can reduce the Cu(II) into Cu(I) instantaneously via a thermocatalysis process, thus completing the cycle of Cu(I)/Cu(II) redox. The assembled electrolyzer only requires a voltage input of 0.92 V to achieve a current density of 100 mA cm^-2 . Consequently, the electricity consumption for per cubic H₂ produced in the system is 2.2 kWh, only half of the value for conventional water electrolysis (4.5 kWh). This work provides a promising strategy for the low-cost, efficient production of high-purity H₂ .

On-Site Colorimetric Detection of Cholesterol Based on Polypyrrole Nanoparticles

Herein, we report a facile method for cholesterol detection by coupling the peroxidase-like activity of polypyrrole nanoparticles (PPy NPs) and cholesterol oxidase (ChOx). ChOx can catalyze the oxidation of cholesterol to produce H₂O₂. Subsequently, PPy NPs, as a nanozyme, induce the reaction between H₂O₂ and 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB). Under optimal conditions, the increase is proportional to cholesterol with concentrations from 10 to 800 μM in absorbance of TMB at 652 nm. The linear range for cholesterol is 10-100 μM, with a detection limit of 3.5 μM. This reported method is successfully employed for detection of cholesterol in human serum. The recovery percentage is ranged within 96-106.9%. Furthermore, we designed a facile and simple portable assay kit using the proposed system, realizing the on-site semiquantitative and visual detection of cholesterol in human serum. The cholesterol content detected from the portable assay kit were closely matching those obtained results from solution-based assays, thereby holding great potential in clinical diagnosis and health management.

Co(OH)2 nanosheets decorated Cu(OH)2 nanorods for highly sensitive nonenzymatic detection of glucose

Co(OH)₂ nanosheets/Cu(OH)₂ nanorods composite electrodes for non-enzymatic glucose detection were fabricated by electrodepositing Co(OH)₂ nanosheets on Cu(OH)₂ nanorods substrate grown directly on the copper sheet via a simple one-step reaction. The Co(OH)₂ nanosheets/Cu(OH)₂ nanorods composite electrode was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The glucose sensing performance of the composite electrode was investigated by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry. The composite electrode shows high sensitivity of 2366 µA mM^-1 cm^-2 up to 2 mM with a lower detection limit of 0.17 mM (S/N = 3). The composite electrode is highly selective to glucose in the presence of various substances that always co-exist with glucose in real blood samples. The response of the composite towards human blood serum was in good agreement with that of commercially available glucose sensors, suggesting that a promising electrode material for highly sensitive and selective non enzymatic detection of glucose can be envisioned.
