Abstract
For over a century, the Tishchenko reaction has been a valuable technique for synthesizing esters from aldehydes, serving a variety of applications in different domains. Beyond the remarkable advances in organoactinide and organolanthanide chemistry over the past two decades, there has been a significant increase in the research of the electrophilic d0/fn chemistry of organoactinide and organolanthanide compounds due to the captivating interplay between their structure and reactivity, and their exceptional performance in various homogeneous catalytic processes. The remarkable influence of ligand design, both in terms of steric hindrance and electronic properties, on the catalytic activity of organo-f-element complexes in organic transformations is well-established. However, the traditional view was that the significant oxophilicity of actinide and lanthanide complexes makes them unfavorable for reactions involving oxygen because of catalytic poisoning and their applications have been relatively limited, primarily focused on hydroalkoxylation, small-molecule activation, and cyclic ester polymerization. This review dissects the intricate interplay between ligand design and catalytic activity in actinide and lanthanide complexes, specifically in the context of the Tishchenko esterification.

Abstract
The reactions of two highly strained cyclopropenimine ligands L1H and L2H (L1H = N1,N1,N2,N2-tetraisopropyl-3-iminocycloprop-1-ene-1,2-diamine, L2H = N1,N1,N2,N2-tetracyclohexyl-3-iminocycloprop-1-ene-1,2-diamine) with three thorium precursors Cp*2ThCl2, Cp*2Th(Cl)(CH3), and Cp*2Th(CH3)2 were studied. At -20 °C, L1H and L2H react with Cp*2ThCl2 to form Th1 (Th1 = Cp*2ThCl2(L1H)) and Th2 (Th2 = Cp*2ThCl2(L2H)), respectively, where the neutral ligand coordinates to the thorium metal center. Coordination of the ligand to the thorium metal center introduces aromaticity at the cyclopropene ring of the ligand. Reaction at room temperature results in the ring opening of the ligand to form Th3 (Th3 = Cp*2ThCl2((Z)-2,3-bis(diisopropylamino)acrylonitrile) and Th4 (Th4 = Cp*2ThCl2((Z)-2,3-bis(dicyclohexylamino)acrylonitrile), where the cyclopropenimine converts into a nitrile and coordinates to the thorium metal center. Reaction of L1H and L2H with Cp*2Th(Cl)(CH3) and/or Cp*2Th(CH3)2 at -20 °C results in a rapid methanolysis reaction and forms Cp*2Th(L1/L2)(CH3/Cl)-type complexes Th5 (Th5 = Cp*2Th(L1)(CH3)), Th6 (Th6 = Cp*2Th(L2)(CH3), Th7 (Th7 = Cp*2Th(L1)(Cl), and Th8 (Th8 = Cp*2Th(L2)(Cl). On the other hand, at room temperature, these reactions result in a ring opening of the ligand. Room-temperature reaction of L1H and L2H with Cp*2Th(CH3)2 results in Th9 (Th9 = Cp*2Th(CH3)((Z)-3-imino-N1,N1,N2,N2-tetraisopropylbut-1-ene-1,2-diamine) and Th10 (Th10 = Cp*2Th(CH3)((Z)-3-imino-N1,N1,N2,N2-tetracyclohexylbut-1-ene-1,2-diamine). Similarly, at room temperature, L1H and L2H react with Cp*2Th(Cl)(CH3) to form Th11 (Th11 = Cp*2Th(Cl)((Z)-3-imino- N1,N1,N2,N2-tetraisopropylbut-1-ene-1,2-diamine) and Th12 (Th12 = Cp*2Th(Cl)((Z)-3-imino-N1,N1,N2,N2-tetracyclohexylbut-1-ene-1,2-diamine). The ring-opening reaction is assisted by the nucleophilic attack of the thorium-coordinated methyl group to the highly strained cyclopropene imine carbon.

Abstract
An N-aryloxide-amidine ligand (1), [ONNO] ligand, integrating phenoxide (PhO-) and amidine ligands through methylene linkers, was employed in actinide chemistry. Upon reaction of the deprotonated ligand with ThCl4(DME)2 in ether, the corresponding dimer complex 2 was obtained. Upon treatment of 2 with KCp* (Cp* = Cp(Me)5) in tetrahydrofuran, the corresponding {[ONNO]ThIVCp*(LiCl)}2 (4) was obtained. In complex 2, the two ArO- arms bonded from the same ligand to different ThIV centers. In contrast, both ArO- arms coordinated to the same metal center in 4. Notably, when a mixture of 2 and bipyridine was treated with one or two equiv of KC8, the [ONNO]ThIV-bipyridyl•̅ radical dimer complex (5) and [ONNO]ThIV-bipyridyl2- dianionic dimer species (6) were obtained, respectively.

Abstract
The high stability of the + IVoxidation state limits thorium redox reactivity. Here we report the synthesis and the redox reactivity of two Th(IV) complexes supported by the arene-tethered tris(siloxide) tripodal ligands [(KOSiR2 Ar)3 -arene)]. The two-electron reduction of these Th(IV) complexes generates the doubly reduced [KTh((OSi(Ot Bu)2 Ar)3 -arene)(THF)2 ] (2OtBu ) and [K(2.2.2-cryptand)][Th((OSiPh2 Ar)3 -arene)(THF)2 ](2Ph -crypt) where the formal oxidation state of Th is +II. Structural and computational studies indicate that the reduction occurred at the arene anchor of the ligand. The robust tripodal frameworks store in the arene anchor two electrons that become available at the metal center for the two-electron reduction of a broad range of substrates (N2 O, COT, CHT, Ph2 N2 , Ph3 PS and O2 ) while retaining the ligand framework. This work shows that arene-tethered tris(siloxide) tripodal ligands allow implementation of two-electron redox chemistry at the thorium center while retaining the ligand framework unchanged.

Abstract
Hydroamination, the addition of an N-H bond across a C-C multiple bond, is a reaction with a great synthetic potential. Important advances have been made in the last decades concerning catalysis of these reactions. However, controlling the regioselectivity in the amine addition toward the formation of anti-Markovnikov products (addition to the less substituted carbon) still remains a challenge, particularly in intermolecular hydroaminations of alkenes and alkynes. The goal of this review is to collect the systems in which intermolecular hydroamination of terminal alkynes and alkenes with anti-Markovnikov regioselectivity has been achieved. The focus will be placed on the mechanistic aspects of such reactions, to discern the step at which regioselectivity is decided and to unravel the factors that favor the anti-Markovnikov regioselectivity. In addition to the processes entailing direct addition of the amine to the C-C multiple bond, alternative pathways, involving several reactions to accomplish anti-Markovnikov regioselectivity (formal hydroamination processes), will also be discussed in this review. The catalysts gathered embrace most of the metal groups of the Periodic Table. Finally, a section discussing radical-mediated and metal-free approaches, as well as heterogeneous catalyzed processes, is also included.

Abstract
Thorium complexes decorated with 5-, 6-, and 7-membered N-heterocyclic iminato ligands containing mesityl wingtip substitutions have been synthesized and fully characterized. These complexes were found to be efficient in the hydroboration of cyclic and linear organic carbonates with HBpin or 9-BBN promoting their decarbonylation and producing the corresponding boronated diols and methanol. In addition, the hydroboration of CO2 breaks the molecule into "CO" and "O" forming boronated methanol and pinBOBpin. Moreover, the demanding depolymerization of polycarbonates to the corresponding boronated diols and methanol opens the possibility of recycling polymers for energy sources. Increasing the core ring size of the ligands allows a better performance of the complexes. The reaction proceeds with high yields under mild reaction conditions, with low catalyst loading, and short reaction times, and shows a broad applicability scope. The reaction is achieved via the recycling of a high-energy Th-H moiety from a stable Th-OR motif. Experimental evidence and DFT calculations corroborate the formation of the thorium hydride species and the reduction of the carbonate with HBpin to the corresponding Bpin-protected alcohols and H3COBpin through the formate and acetal intermediates.

Abstract
Thorium redox chemistry is extremely scarce due to the high stability of ThIV . Here we report two unique examples of thorium arenide complexes prepared by reduction of a ThIV -siloxide complex in presence of naphthalene, the mononuclear arenide complex [K(OSi(Ot Bu)3 )3 Th(η6 -C10 H8 )] (1) and the inverse-sandwich complex [K(OSi(Ot Bu)3 )3 Th]2 (μ-η6 ,η6 -C10 H8 )] (2). The electrons stored in these complexes allow the reduction of a broad range of substrates (N2 O, AdN3 , CO2 , HBBN). Higher reactivity was found for the complex 1 which reacts with the diazoolefin IDipp=CN2 to yield the unexpected ThIV amidoalkynyl complex 5 via a terminal N-heterocyclic vinylidene intermediate. This work showed that arenides can act as convenient redox-active ligands for implementing thorium-ligand cooperative multielectron transfer and that the reactivity can be tuned by the arenide binding mode.

Abstract
Four new complexes containing the bis(pentamethylcyclopentadienyl)thorium(IV) moiety, Cp*2Th(L1)(Me) (Th2), Cp*2Th(L2)(Me) (Th3), Cp*2Th(L1)Cl (Th5), and Cp*2Th(L2)Cl (Th6), were synthesized in quantitative yields via the protonolysis reaction of the metallocene precursor complexes Cp*2Th(Me)2 (Th1) and Cp*2Th(Me)Cl (Th4) and the respective six- and seven-membered N-heterocyclic neutral imine ligands L1H and L2H. The molecular structures of all the complexes were established by single-crystal X-ray structure analyses. The synthesized complexes along with the precursor complexes were employed as catalysts for the cyanosilylation reaction of ketones with trimethylsilyl cyanide (Me3SiCN). The removal of the iminato ligand is necessary to trigger the reaction, allowing the formation of the active catalyst.

Abstract
Formulating insightful questions and experiments is crucial to the advancement of science. The purpose of this Perspective is to encourage scientists in all areas of chemistry to ask more "What if?" questions: What if we tried this experiment? What if we used these conditions? What if that idea is not correct? To stimulate this thinking, a retrospective analysis of a specific field, in this case rare-earth metal chemistry, is presented that describes the "What if?" questions that could have and should have been asked earlier based on our current knowledge. The goal is to provide scientists with a historical perspective of discovery that exemplifies how previous views in chemistry were often narrowed by predominant beliefs in principles that were incorrect. The same situation is likely to exist today, but we do not realize the limitations! Hopefully, this analysis can be used as a springboard for posing important "What if?" questions that should be asked right now in every area of chemical research.

Abstract
In the last decade, major conceptual advances in the chemistry of actinide molecules and materials have been made to demonstrate their distinct reactivity profiles as compared to lanthanide and transition metal compounds, but some difficult questions remain concerning the intriguing stability of low-valent actinide complexes, and the importance of the 5f-orbitals in reactivity and bonding. The imidazolin-2-iminato moiety has been extensively used in ligands for the advancement of actinide chemistry owing to its unique capability of stabilizing the reactive and highly electrophilic metal ions by virtue of its strong electron donation and steric tunability. The current review article describes recent developments in the chemistry of light actinide metal ions (thorium and uranium) bearing these N-heterocyclic iminato moieties as supporting ligands. In addition, the effect of ring expansion of the N-heterocycle on the catalytic aptitude of the organoactinides is also described herein. The synthesis and reactivity of actinide complexes bearing N-heterocyclic iminato ligands are presented, and promising apposite applications are also presented. The current review focuses on addressing the catalytic behavior of actinide complexes with oxygen-containing substrates such as in the Tishchenko reaction, hydroelementation processes, and polymerization reactions. Actinide complexes have also found new catalytic applications, as demonstrated by the potent chemoselective carbonyl hydroboration and tandem proton-transfer esterification (TPTE) reaction, featuring coupling between an aldehyde and alcohol.

Abstract
The f‐block chemistry of phospholyl and arsolyl ligands, heavier p‐block analogues of substituted cyclopentadienyls (CpR, C5R5) where one or more CR groups are replaced by P or As atoms, is less developed than for lighter isoelectronic C5R5 rings. Heterocyclopentadienyl complexes can exhibit properties that complement and contrast with CpR chemistry. Given that there has been renewed interest in phospholyl and arsolyl f‐block chemistry in the last two decades, coinciding with a renaissance in f‐block solution chemistry, a review of this field is timely. Here, the syntheses of all structurally characterised examples of lanthanide and actinide phospholyl and arsolyl complexes to date are covered, including benzannulated derivatives, and together with group 3 complexes for completeness. The physicochemical properties of these complexes are reviewed, with the intention of motivating further research in this field.

Abstract
M. Basile, et al., Chem. Commun., 2015, 51, 5306-5309, showed that a sodium ion is sandwiched by uranyl(vi) oxygen atoms of two 3 : 3 uranyl(vi)-citrate complex molecules in single-crystals. By means of NMR spectroscopy supported by DFT calculations we provide unambiguous evidence for this complex to persist in aqueous solution above a critical concentration of 3 mM uranyl citrate. Unprecedented Ca2+ and La3+ coordination by a bis-(η3-uranyl(vi)-oxo) motif advances the understanding of uranium's aqueous chemistry. As determined from 17O NMR, Ca2+ and more distinctly La3+ cause strong O[double bond, length as m-dash]U[double bond, length as m-dash]O polarization, which opens up new ways for uranyl(vi)-oxygen activation and functionalization.

Abstract
With the reported CO2 activation for the oxidation of benzene to phenol (-ENE → -OL) by the graphitic carbon nitride g-C3N4 (CN) via an artificial photosynthetic route as inspiration, high-valent actinyls (AnmO2)n+ (An = U, Np, Pu; m = VI, V; n = 2, 1) have been introduced for its further modification. Our calculations indicate thermodynamic spontaneity in the feasibility of g-C3N4-(AnmO2)n+ (CN-Anm) formation. The magnificent structural and electronic properties of CN-Anm are utilized for CO2 activation in terms of the rarely studied -ENE → -OL conversion. The calculated free energies show that most steps of the catalytic cycle are favored by CN-Anm complexes. The first step (carbamate formation) is slightly endothermic in all cases, where CN-U is 0.51 eV higher than CN and CN-Pu is -0.01 eV lower. All benzene addition reactions release energy, with that for CN-U being the lowest. The phenolate formation is favored by some actinyl complexes over CN, and CN-U is only 0.23 eV higher. The phenol release (resulting in formamide complexes) and CO desorption are exothermic for all CN-Anm. The overall process suggests the improved catalytic performance of actinyl-modified CN materials, and the slightly depleted uranyl-carbon nitride could be one of the promising catalysts.

Abstract
Synthetic studies of bimetallic uranium nitride complexes with the N(SiMe3)2 ligand have generated a new nitride complex of U(III), which is highly reactive toward C-H bonds and H2. Treatment of the previously reported U(IV)/U(IV) nitride complex [Na(DME)3][((Me3Si)2N)2U(μ-N)(μ-κ2:CN̵-CH2SiMe2NSiMe3)U(N(SiMe3)2)2] (DME = 1,2-dimethoxyethane), 1, with 2 equiv of HNEt3BPh3 yielded the cationic U(IV)/U(IV) nitride complex, [{((Me3Si)2N)2U(THF)}2(μ-N)][BPh4] (THF = tetrahydrofuran), 3, by successive protonolysis of one N(SiMe3)2 ligand and the uranium-methylene bond. Reduction of 3 with KC8 afforded a rare example of a U(III) nitride, namely, the U(III)/U(IV) complex, [{((Me3Si)2N)2U(THF)}2(μ-N)], 4. Complex 4 is highly reactive and undergoes 1,2-addition of the C-H bond of the N(SiMe3)2 ligand across the uranium-nitride moiety to give the U(III)/U(IV) imide cyclometalate complex, [((Me3Si)2N)2(THF)U(μ-NH)(μ-κ2:C,N̵-CH2SiMe2NSiMe3)U(N(SiMe3)2))(THF)], 5. Complex 4 also reacts with toluene at -80 °C to yield an inverse sandwich imide complex arising from C-H bond activation of toluene, [{((Me3Si)2N)2U(THF)}2(μ-N)][{((Me3Si)2N)3U(μ-NH)U(N(SiMe3)2)}2(C7H8)], 6. Complex 4 effects the heterolytic cleavage of the C-H of phenylacetylene to yield the imide acetylide [{((Me3Si)2N)2U(THF)}2(μ-N)][((Me3Si)2N)2U(η1-CCPh)(μ2-NH)(μ2-η2:η1-CCPh)U(N(SiMe3)2)2], 7. Complex 4 also reacts with H2 to produce an imide hydride U(III)/U(IV) complex, [{((Me3Si)2N)2U(THF)}2(μ-NH)(μ-H)], 9. These data demonstrate that nitride complexes of U(III) are accessible with amide ligands and show the high reactivity of molecular U(III) nitrides in C-H bond activation.

Abstract
The synthesis and reactivity of uranium compounds supported by the tris-tert-butoxysiloxide ligand is surveyed. The multiple binding modes of the tert-butoxysiloxide ligand have proven very well suited to stabilize highly reactive homo- and heteropolymetallic complexes of uranium that have shown an unusual high reactivity towards small molecules such as CO2, CS2, chalcogens and azides. Moreover, these ligands have allowed the isolation of dinuclear nitride and oxide bridged complexes of uranium in various oxidation states. The ability of the tris-tert-butoxysiloxide ligands to trap alkali ions in these nitride or oxide complexes leads to unprecedented ligand based and metal based reduction and functionalization of N2, CO, CO2 and H2.

Abstract
A series of mono-anionic non-carbocyclic ligands, including bidentate benzamidinate [PhC(NDipp)2] (Dipp = C6H3-2,6-iPr2), iminophosphinamide [Ph2P(NDipp)2] and phosphinoamide [Ph2PNDipp], and tridentate hydrotris(3,5-dimethyl-1-pyrazolyl)borate (TpMe2) were used to stabilize the corresponding thorium(iv) trialkyl complexes [PhC(NDipp)2]Th(CH2SiMe3)3 (1), [Ph2P(NDipp)2]Th(CH2SiMe3)3 (2), [Ph2P(NDipp)]Th(p-CH2-C6H4-Me)3 (3) and (TpMe2)Th(CH2SiMe3)3 (4), which were characterized by NMR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray analysis. Complexes 1-4 in combination with [Ph3C][B(C6F5)4] and AliBu3 form non-Cp-ligated actinide catalyst systems to show high activity and high cis-1,4-selectivity (89.9%) or trans-1,4-selectivity (91.4%) for the polymerization of isoprene. The reaction rate and selectivity of complexes 1 and 2 were controlled by the crowded space around the thorium centre, corroborated by the kinetics of the polymerization and the steric maps.

Abstract
A series of uranyl thiocyanate and selenocyanate of the type [R4N]3[UO2(NCS)5] (R4 = nBu4, Me3Bz, Et3Bz), [Ph4P][UO2(NCS)3(NO3)] and [R4N]3[UO2(NCSe)5] (R4 = Me4, nPr4, Et3Bz) have been prepared and structurally characterized. The resulting noncovalent interactions have been examined and compared to other examples in the literature. The nature of these interactions is determined by the cation so that when the alkyl groups are small, chalcogenide···chalcogenide interactions are present, but this "switches off" when R = nPr and charge assisted U═O···H-C and S(e)···H-C hydrogen bonding remain the dominant interaction. Increasing the size of the chain to nBu results in only S···H-C interactions. The spectroscopic implications of these chalcogenide interactions have been explored in the vibrational and photophysical properties of the series [R4N]3[UO2(NCS)5] (R4 = Me4, Et4, nPr4, nBu4, Me3Bz, Et3Bz), [R4N]3[UO2(NCSe)5] (R4 = Me4, nPr4, Et3Bz) and [Et4N]4[UO2(NCSe)5][NCSe]. The data suggest that U═O···H-C interactions are weak and do not perturb the uranyl moiety. While the chalcogenide interactions do not influence the photophysical properties, a coupling of the U═O and δ(NCS) or δ(NCSe) vibrational modes is observed in the 77 K solid state emission spectra. A theoretical examination of representative examples of Se···Se, C-H···Se, and C-H···O═U by molecular electrostatic potentials and NBO and AIM methodologies gives a deeper understanding of these weak interactions. C-H···Se are individually weak but C-H···O═U interactions are even weaker, supporting the idea that the -yl oxo's are weak Lewis bases. An Atoms in Molecules study suggests that the chalcogenide interaction is similar to lone pair···π or fluorine···fluorine interactions. An oxidation of the NCS ligands to form [(UO2)(SO4)2(H2O)4]·3H2O was also noted.
