Seebeck Effect in Molecular Wires Facilitating Long-Range Transport

The study of molecular wires facilitating long-range charge transport is of fundamental interest for the development of various technologies in (bio)organic and molecular electronics. Defining the nature of long-range charge transport is challenging as electrical characterization does not offer the ability to distinguish a tunneling mechanism from the other. Here, we show that investigation of the Seebeck effect provides the ability. We examine the length dependence of the Seebeck coefficient in electrografted bis-terpyridine Ru(II) complex films. The Seebeck coefficient ranges from 307 to 1027 μV/K, with an increasing rate of 95.7 μV/(K nm) as the film thickness increases to 10 nm. Quantum-chemical calculations unveil that the nearly overlapped molecular-orbital energy level of the Ru complex with the Fermi level accounts for the giant thermopower. Landauer-Büttiker probe simulations indicate that the significant length dependence evinces the Seebeck effect dominated by coherent near-resonant tunneling rather than thermal hopping. This study enhances our comprehension of long-range charge transport, paving the way for efficient electronic and thermoelectric materials.

Probing the effect of nitro-substituents in the modulation of LUMO energies for directional electron transport through 4d6 ruthenium(II)-based metallosurfactants

Electron-withdrawing nitro-substituents were installed onto terpyridine- and phenanthroline-based metallosurfactants with 4d6 ruthenium(II), which were deposited as Langmuir-Blodgett monolayers aiming to study the feasibility of charge transport in Au|LB|Au junctions. The nitro groups are intended to modulate the energy of the frontier molecular orbitals to near to, or match that of Fermi levels in the gold electrodes. A series of heteroleptic metallosurfactants [RuII(C18OPh-terpy)(X-terpy)](PF6)2 and [RuII(C18OPh-terpy)(X-phen)Cl]PF6 were synthesized, where C18OPh-terpy is the 4'-[4-(octadecyloxy)phenyl]-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine amphiphile common to all species, X-terpy is a terpyridine with-H (1) or-phenyl-NO2 (2) and X-phen is a phenanthroline with-H (3) or-NO2 (4) groups. These metallosurfactants were characterized by experimental and computational methods, and the presence of nitro groups affect more affordable reductions at less negative potentials, as well as slightly more positive oxidations, these changes are less pronounced in species 2 than in 4. Species 1 and 2 showed limited Pockels-Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett film formation with lower collapse pressure of 27 mN m-1. In contrast, metallosurfactants 3 and 4 showed enhanced hydrophilicity indicated by higher collapse pressures of ca. 36 mN m-1. The LB monolayers of 3 and 4 were deposited on gold electrodes to form Au|LB|Au junctions and electron transport was measured as I/V curves. The NO2-bearing species 4 showed asymmetric curves associated with directional electron transport with amplitudes up to -2.0 nA and rectification ratios from 5 to 26 between -1 to +1 V and from 3 to 14 between -3 to +3 V.

Electron transport through a (terpyridine)ruthenium metallo-surfactant containing a redox-active aminocatechol derivative

Aiming to develop a new class of metallosurfactants with unidirectional electron transfer properties, a (terpyridine) ruthenium complex containing a semiquinone derivative L², namely [Ru^III(L^terpy)(L²)Cl]PF₆ (1), was synthesized and structurally characterized as a solid and in solution. The electronic and redox behaviour of 1 was studied experimentally as well as by means of DFT methods, and is indicative of significant orbital mixing and overlap between metal and ligands. The complex forms stable Pockels-Langmuir films at the air-water interface and allows for the formation of thin films onto gold electrodes to prepare nanoscale Au|LB 1|Au junctions for current-voltage (I/V) analysis. Complex 1 shows asymmetric electron transfer with a maximum rectification ratio of 32 based on tunnelling through MOs of the aminocatechol derivative.

Naphthalene diimides: perspectives and promise

In this review, we describe the developments in the field of naphthalene diimides (NDIs) from 2016 to the presentday. NDIs are shown to be an increasingly interesting class of molecules due to their electronic properties, large electron deficient aromatic cores and tendency to self-assemble into functional structures. Almost all NDIs possess high electron affinity, good charge carrier mobility, and excellent thermal and oxidative stability, making them promising candidates for applications in organic electronics, photovoltaic devices, and flexible displays. NDIs have also been extensively studied due to their potential real-world uses across a wide variety of applications including supramolecular chemistry, sensing, host-guest complexes for molecular switching devices, such as catenanes and rotaxanes, ion-channels, catalysis, and medicine and as non-fullerene accepters in solar cells. In recent years, NDI research with respect to supramolecular assemblies and mechanoluminescent properties has also gained considerable traction. Thus, this review will assist a wide range of readers and researchers including chemists, physicists, biologists, medicinal chemists and materials scientists in understanding the scope for development and applicability of NDI dyes in their respective fields through a discussion of the main properties of NDI derivatives and of the status of emerging applications.

Preparation of nitrogen self-doped hierarchical porous carbon with rapid-freezing support for cooperative pollutant adsorption and catalytic oxidation of persulfate

Herein, we report a method to synthesize nitrogen self-doped hierarchical porous carbon materials derived from chitosan. This method uses potassium hydroxide (KOH) activation and rapid-freezing technology. The catalyst (CA-900Q 1-1) obtained after rapid-freezing and KOH activation treatment show excellent persulfate activation ability. It can remove 20 mg bisphenol A (BPA) within 10 min better than traditional metal oxidate and nanomaterials. In the aquatic environment, CA-900Q 1-1 has a high resistance to inorganic anions. CA-900Q 1-1, possessing a high proportion of graphitic nitrogen, provides a sufficient number of active sites for persulfate activation. In addition, the catalyst yielded sizeable specific surface areas (SSAs) (1756.1 m²/g) and a hierarchical pore structure, which helps to improve the mass transfer in the carbon framework. The efficient adsorption of pollutants by the catalyst shortens the time required for target organic molecules to migrate to the catalyst surface and hierarchical pore structure. Furthermore, the catalyst has excellent electrical conductivity (R = 1.73 Ω), which enables pollutants adsorbed on the catalyst surface to transfer electrons to the persulfate through the N-doped sp²-hybrid carbon network faster.

Long-Range Charge Transport in Diazonium-Based Single-Molecule Junctions

Thin layers of cobalt and ruthenium polypyridyl-oligomers with thicknesses between 2 and 8 nm were deposited on gold by electrochemical reduction of diazonium salts. A scanning tunneling microscope was used to create single-molecule junctions (SMJs). The charge transport properties of the Au-[Co(tpy)₂]_n-Au (n = 1-4) SMJs do not depend markedly on the oligomer length, have an extremely low attenuation factor (β ∼ 0.19 nm^-1), and do not show a thickness-dependent transition between two mechanisms. Resonant charge transport is proposed as the main transport mechanism. The SMJ conductance decreases by 1 order of magnitude upon changing the metal from Co to Ru. In Au-[Ru(tpy)₂]_n-Au and Au-[Ru(bpy)₃]_n-Au SMJs, a charge transport transition from direct tunneling to hopping is evidenced by a break in the length-dependent β-plot. The three different mechanisms observed are a clear molecular signature on transport in SMJs. Most importantly, these results are in good agreement with those obtained on large-area molecular junctions.
