Calcium stilbene complexes: structures and dual reactivity

Ca(II) and Yb(II) complexes featuring M(C≡C)4 structural motif: enforced proximity or genuine η2 -bonding?

Bis(carbazolide) complexes M[3,6-tBu2 -1,8-(RC≡C)2 Carb]2 (THF)n (R=SiMe3 , n=0, M=Ca, Yb; R=Ph, n=1, M=Ca, Yb; n=0, M=Yb) were synthesized through transamination reaction of M[N(SiMe3 )2 ]2 (THF)2 with two molar equivalents of carbazoles. The complexes feature M(η2 -C≡C)4 structural motif composed of M(II) ions encapsulated by four acetylene fragments due to atypical for alkaline- and rare-earth metals η2 -interactions with triple C≡C bond. This interaction is evidenced experimentally by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy in the solid state and by NMR-spectroscopy in the solution. According to QTAIM analysis there are 4 bond critical points (3;-1) between the metal atom and each of the triple bonds, which are connected by a strongly curved, almost T-shaped bond pathway.

Alkaline-Earth Metal Mediated Benzene-to-Biphenyl Coupling

Complex [(DIPeP BDI)Ca]2 (C6 H6 ), with a C6 H6 2- dianion bridging two Ca2+ ions, reacts with benzene to yield [(DIPeP BDI)Ca]2 (biphenyl) with a bridging biphenyl2- dianion (DIPeP BDI=HC[C(Me)N-DIPeP]2 ; DIPeP=2,6-CH(Et)2 -phenyl). The biphenyl complex was also prepared by reacting [(DIPeP BDI)Ca]2 (C6 H6 ) with biphenyl or by reduction of [(DIPeP BDI)CaI]2 with KC8 in presence of biphenyl. Benzene-benzene coupling was also observed when the deep purple product of ball-milling [(DIPP BDI)CaI(THF)]2 with K/KI was extracted with benzene (DIPP=2,6-CH(Me)2 -phenyl) giving crystalline [(DIPP BDI)Ca(THF)]2 (biphenyl) (52 % yield). Reduction of [(DIPeP BDI)SrI]2 with KC8 gave highly labile [(DIPeP BDI)Sr]2 (C6 H6 ) as a black powder (61 % yield) which reacts rapidly and selectively with benzene to [(DIPeP BDI)Sr]2 (biphenyl). DFT calculations show that the most likely route for biphenyl formation is a pathway in which the C6 H6 2- dianion attacks neutral benzene. This is facilitated by metal-benzene coordination.

Sterically shielded primary anilides of the alkaline-earth metals of the type (thf)nAe(NH-Ar*)2 (Ae = Mg, Ca, Sr, and Ba; Ar* = bulky aryl)

Metalation of 2,4,6-triphenylphenylamine (H₂N-C₆H₂-2,4,6-Ph₃, 1a) and 4-methyl-2,6-bis(diphenylmethyl)aniline (2,6-bis(diphenylmethyl)-p-toluidine, H₂N-C₆H₂-4-Me-2,6-(CHPh₂)₂, 2a) with dibutylmagnesium and Ae[N(SiMe₃)₂]₂ with a stoichiometric 1 : 2 ratio in THF at room temperature yields the corresponding primary anilides [(thf)_nAe{N(H)-C₆H₂-2,4,6-Ph₃}₂] (Ae/n = Mg/2 (1b), Ca/2 (1c), Sr/3 (1d), and Ba/3 (1e)) and [(thf)_nAe{N(H)-C₆H₂-4-Me-2,6-(CHPh₂)₂}₂] (Ae/n = Mg/2 (2b), Ca/3 (2c) and Sr/2 (2d)), respectively. The 1 : 1 reaction of Mg(n/sBu)₂ and MgPh₂ with 2a leads to the formation of heteroleptic [(thf)₂Mg(R){N(H)-C₆H₂-4-Me-2,6-(CHPh₂)₂}] (R = n/sBu (2bBu), Ph (2bPh)). At 50 °C, the strontium complex 2d liberates one equivalent of 2avia intramolecular deprotonation of the triarylmethyl functionality yielding dinuclear [(thf)₂Sr{N(H)-C₆H₂-4-Me-2-(CPh₂)-6-(CHPh₂)₂}]₂ (2d'). The barium compound is significantly more reactive and regardless of applied stoichiometry the isotypic barium congener [(thf)₂Ba{N(H)-C₆H₂-4-Me-2-(CPh₂)-6-(CHPh₂)₂}]₂ (2e') forms. The molecular structures of 1c, 2d, 2d', and 2e' are stabilized by metal-phenyl π-interactions.

Generation of organo-alkaline earth metal complexes from non-polar unsaturated molecules and their synthetic applications

Organomagnesium compounds, represented by the Grignard reagents, are one of the most classical yet versatile carbanion species which have widely been utilized in synthetic chemistry. These reagents are typically prepared via oxidative addition of organic halides to magnesium metals, via halogen-magnesium exchange between halo(hetero)arenes and organomagnesium reagents or via deprotonative magnesiation of prefunctionalized (hetero)arenes. On the other hand, recent studies have demonstrated that the organo-alkaline earth metal complexes including those based on heavier alkaline earth metals such as calcium, strontium and barium could be generated from readily available non-polar unsaturated molecules such as alkenes, alkynes, 1,3-enynes and arenes through unique metallation processes. Nonetheless, the resulting organo-alkaline earth metal complexes could be further functionalized with a variety of electrophiles in various reaction modes. In particular, organocalcium, strontium and barium species have shown unprecedented reactivity in the downstream functionalization, which could not be observed in the reactivity of organomagnesium complexes. This perspective will focus on the newly emerging protocols for the generation of organo-alkaline earth metal complexes from non-polar unsaturated molecules and their applications in chemical synthesis and catalysis.

The Combination of Untargeted Metabolomics and Machine Learning Predicts the Biosynthesis of Phenolic Compounds in Bryophyllum Medicinal Plants (Genus Kalanchoe)

Phenolic compounds constitute an important family of natural bioactive compounds responsible for the medicinal properties attributed to Bryophyllum plants (genus Kalanchoe, Crassulaceae), but their production by these medicinal plants has not been characterized to date. In this work, a combinatorial approach including plant tissue culture, untargeted metabolomics, and machine learning is proposed to unravel the critical factors behind the biosynthesis of phenolic compounds in these species. The untargeted metabolomics revealed 485 annotated compounds that were produced by three Bryophyllum species cultured in vitro in a genotype and organ-dependent manner. Neurofuzzy logic (NFL) predictive models assessed the significant influence of genotypes and organs and identified the key nutrients from culture media formulations involved in phenolic compound biosynthesis. Sulfate played a critical role in tyrosol and lignan biosynthesis, copper in phenolic acid biosynthesis, calcium in stilbene biosynthesis, and magnesium in flavanol biosynthesis. Flavonol and anthocyanin biosynthesis was not significantly affected by mineral components. As a result, a predictive biosynthetic model for all the Bryophyllum genotypes was proposed. The combination of untargeted metabolomics with machine learning provided a robust approach to achieve the phytochemical characterization of the previously unexplored species belonging to the Bryophyllum subgenus, facilitating their biotechnological exploitation as a promising source of bioactive compounds.

Molecular Main Group Metal Hydrides

This review serves to document advances in the synthesis, versatile bonding, and reactivity of molecular main group metal hydrides within Groups 1, 2, and 12-16. Particular attention will be given to the emerging use of said hydrides in the rapidly expanding field of Main Group element-mediated catalysis. While this review is comprehensive in nature, focus will be given to research appearing in the open literature since 2001.

Reactivity of a Molecular Calcium Hydride Cation ([CaH]+) Supported by an NNNN Macrocycle

The hydride ligand in the cationic calcium hydride supported by a NNNN-type macrocycle, [(Me₄TACD)₂Ca₂(μ-H)₂(THF)][BAr₄]₂ (1; Me₄TACD = 1,4,7,10-tetramethyl-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane; THF = tetrahydrofuran; BAr₄ = B(C₆H₃-3,5-Me₂)₄), shows, in addition to its Brönsted basicity toward weak acids, a pronounced nucleophilicity resulting in nucleophilic substitution or insertion (addition) at a silicon or sp² carbon center. Terminal acetylenes RC≡CH (R = SiMe₃, cyclopropyl) as well as 1,4-diphenylbutadiene were deprotonated by 1 to give dinuclear complexes [(Me₄TACD)₂Ca₂(μ-C≡CR)₂][BAr₄]₂ (2a, R = SiMe₃; 2b, R = cyclopropyl) and [(Me₄TACD)₂Ca₂(μ₂-η⁴-1,4-Ph₂C₄H₂)][BAr₄]₂ (3) with H₂ evolution. The addition reaction with BH₃(THF) gave a tetrahydridoborate complex, [(Me₄TACD)Ca(BH₄)(THF)₂][BAr₄] (4), with κ₂-H₂BH₂ coordination in the solid state, suggesting a pronounced Lewis acidic calcium center. The behavior resulting from both Lewis acidity and hydricity becomes apparent in the nucleophilic substitution of fluorobenzene by 1 to give benzene and the dimeric fluoride complex [(Me₄TACD)₂Ca₂(μ-F)₂(THF)][BAr₄]₂·2.5THF (5). Analogous nucleophilic substitution reaction is observed for heterofunctionalized organosilanes XSiR₃ [X = I, N(SiHMe₂)₂, N₃; R = Me₃ or HMe₂], which resulted in the formation of calcium complexes [(Me₄TACD)Ca(X)(THF)_n][BAr₄] (6-8) containing an X ligand along with hydrosilane HSiR₃. An insertion reaction by 1 was observed with CO₂ and CO to give dinuclear formato complex [(Me₄TACD)₂Ca₂(μ-OCHO)₂][BAr₄]₂ (9) and cis-enediolato complex [(Me₄TACD)₂Ca₂(μ-OCH═CHO)][BAr₄]₂·3.5THF (10), respectively. The latter is believed to have been formed as a result of the dimerization of an initially generated formyl or oxymethylene complex, [(Me₄TACD)Ca(OCH)]⁺.

Acyclic 1,2-dimagnesioethanes/-ethene derived from magnesium(i) compounds: multipurpose reagents for organometallic synthesis

Reactions of three magnesium(i) dimers, [{(ArNacnac)Mg-}2] (ArNacnac = [(ArNCMe)2CH]-; Ar = xylyl (Xyl), mesityl (Mes) or 2,6-diethylphenyl (Dep)), with either 1,1-diphenylethylene (DPE), α-methylstyrene (MS), trans-stilbene (TS) or diphenylacetylene (DPA) led to the 1,2-addition of the Mg-Mg bond across the substrate, giving rise to the 1,2-dimagnesioethanes, [{(XylNacnac)Mg}2(μ-DPE)], [{(DepNacnac)Mg}2(μ-MS)], [{(ArNacnac)Mg}2(μ-TS)] (Ar = Mes or Dep); and a 1,2-dimagnesioethene, [{(MesNacnac)Mg}2(μ-DPA)]. The reactions involving the 1,1-substituted alkenes are shown to be readily redox reversible, in that the reaction products are in equilibrium with a significant proportion of the starting materials at room temperature. Variable temperature NMR spectroscopy and a van't Hoff analysis point to low kinetic barriers to these weakly exergonic reactions. [{(MesNacnac)Mg}2(μ-DPE)] and [{(MesNacnac)Mg}2(μ-DPA)] behave as 1,2-di-Grignard reagents in their reactions with very bulky amido-zinc bromides, yielding the first examples of a 1,2-dizincioethane, [(L*Zn)2(μ-DPE)] (L* = -N(Ar*)(SiPri 3); Ar* = C6H2Me{C(H)Ph2}2-4,2,6), and a 1,2-dizincioethene, [(TBoLZn)2(μ-DPA)] (TBoL = -N(SiMe3){B(DipNCH)2}, Dip = 2,6-diisopropylphenyl), respectively. Divergent reactivity is shown for [{(MesNacnac)Mg}2(μ-DPE)], which behaves as a two-electron reducing agent when treated with amido-cadmium and amido-magnesium halide precursors, yielding the cadmium(i) and magnesium(i) dimers, [PhBoLCdCdPhBoL] (PhBoL = -N(SiPh3){B(DipNCH)2}) and [L†MgMgL†] (L† = -N(Ar†)(SiMe3); Ar† = C6H2Pri{C(H)Ph2}2-4,2,6), respectively. A further class of reactivity for [{(MesNacnac)Mg}2(μ-DPE)] derives from its reaction with the bulky amido-germanium chloride, L*GeCl, which gives a magnesio-germane, presumably via intramolecular C-H activation of a highly reactive magnesiogermylene intermediate, [:Ge(L*){Mg(MesNacnac)}]. [{(MesNacnac)Mg}2(μ-DPE)] can be considered as acting as a two-electron reducing, magnesium transfer reagent in this reaction.

The reductive aromatisation of 1,3,5,7-cyclooctatetraene by a dimeric calcium hydride occurs via two electron steps and does not necessitate the formation of radical intermediates.

Low Valent Magnesium Chemistry with a Super Bulky β-Diketiminate Ligand

The steric bulk of the well-known ^DIPP BDI ligand (CH[C(CH₃ )N-DIPP]₂ , DIPP=2,6-diisopropylphenyl) was increased by replacing isopropyl for isopentyl groups. This very bulky ^DIPeP BDI ligand could not stabilize the radical species (^DIPeP BDI)Mg^. : reduction of (^DIPeP BDI)MgI with Na gave (^DIPeP BDI)₂ Mg₂ with a rather long Mg-Mg bond of 3.0513(8) Å. Addition of TMEDA prior to reduction gave complex (^DIPeP BDI)₂ Mg₂ (C₆ H₆ ), which could also be obtained as its THF adduct. It is speculated that combination of a bulky spectator ligand and TMEDA prevents dimerization of the intermediate Mg^I radical, which then reacts with the benzene solvent. Complex (^DIPeP BDI)₂ Mg₂ (C₆ H₆ ), which formally contains the anti-aromatic anion C₆ H₆ ^2- , reacted with tBuOH as a Brønsted base to 1,3- and 1,4-cyclohexadiene and with H₂ as a two electron donor to (^DIPeP BDI)₂ Mg₂ H₂ and C₆ H₆ . It also reductively cleaved the C-F bond in fluorobenzene and gave (^DIPeP BDI)MgPh, (^DIPeP BDI)MgF, and C₆ H₆ .
