Accessing One-Dimensional Chains of Halogenoindates(III) in Organic-Inorganic Hybrids

Organic-inorganic hybrids of halogenoindates(III) are typically represented by one of the zero-dimensional units: InX₄^-, InX₅^2-, InX₆^3-, or In₂X₁₁^5-. Higher dimensional anionic forms, although not forbidden, have remained almost elusive. Here we report for the first time In³⁺-based organic-inorganic hybrids, (C₄H₅N₂S)₂InCl₅ and (C₄H₅N₂S)₂InBr₅, with 1D anionic chains of trans-halide-bridged InX₆ octahedra whose formation is guided by 2-mercaptopyrimidinium cations (C₄H₅N₂S⁺). The chains are characterized by the significant ease of deformation, which is reflected in the elongation of the bridging bonds or the displacement of In³⁺ ions. The materials show a robust band gap predominantly governed by C₄H₅N₂S⁺ cations. Dielectric relaxation processes in (C₄H₅N₂S)₂InBr₅ arise from the cations' dynamics and suggest the ability of the brominated system to accommodate even larger cations. Our work represents a successful attempt to expand the structural diversity of halogenoindates(III) and opens a pathway to reach multifunctional 1D In³⁺-based hybrids.

2D lead-free organic–inorganic hybrid exhibiting dielectric and structural phase transition at higher temperatures

A novel switchable molecular dielectric material [3-3-difluorocyclobutylammonium]2CdCl4 was synthesized. It shows a reversible phase transition at 353.95 K and rapid switching and reversibility between high and low dielectric states for several cycles.

Dielectric phase transition of an A2BX4-type perovskite with a pentahedral to octahedral transformation

Organic-inorganic hybrid compounds that undergo reversible dielectric phase transitions are a very attractive class of smart materials due to their wide applications in data storage, data communication and signal sensing. Here, a piperidine ring, C₅H₁₁N, was introduced into the inorganic lead halide perovskite scaffold to obtain three hybrid perovskite compounds, [C₅H₁₂N]₂PbCl₄ (1), [C₅H₁₂N]₂PbBr₄ (2), and [C₅H₁₂N]PbI₃ (3). When compound 2 and compound 3 feature static two-dimensional (2D) and one-dimensional (1D) perovskite structures, respectively, it is striking that compound 1 shows a reversible pentahedral to octahedral transformation. It undergoes an above-room-temperature dielectric phase transition at T_c≅ 352 K, wherein the high dielectric constant is more than twice the low dielectric constant. Structural analysis shows that 1 undergoes a phase transition from the space group Pnma at the low temperature phase (LTP) to C2/c at the high temperature phase (HTP). The phase transition originates from the order-disorder conversion of piperidinium cations. It is interesting to note that, the Pb²⁺ cations in the inorganic moieties change from five-coordinate at the LTP to six-coordinate at the HTP. The discovery of dielectric phase transition hybrid organic-inorganic lead halide perovskite materials further enhances the potential applications of high temperature responsive dielectric switchable materials.

Higher-Temperature Dielectric Molecular Motor Induced by Unusual Chair-to-Rotator Motion

With regard to the artificial molecular motor that was recognized with the 2016 Nobel Prize, this success proves the great scientific significance of rotary motor-type motion at the molecular level, which has been expected to play an invaluable role in the development of electronic information molecular materials. However, designing electronic information-critical high-temperature molecular motors has always been a huge challenge. Since we discovered [(CH₃)₃NCH₂Cl]MnCl₃, this cation rotation pattern with a motor-type motion structure has continued to attract our attention. Considering a strategy that combines molecular machines with dielectric theory, ( N, N-dimethylpiperidinium)CdCl₃, the new dielectric molecular motor material that exhibits superior physical properties, could be considered to be an excellent dielectric switch based on its electric field and temperature. Crystal structure analyses reveal that the reversible phase transition is mainly induced by the unusual chair-to-rotator motion of cations. Because of the unprecedented leaping structural transition from P6₃/ mmc to P2₁/ c and the rotating motor-type motion structure, the material exhibits remarkable anisotropy and outstanding dielectric switching characteristics. These findings open a new avenue for the design and assembly of novel molecular motor materials in the field of electronic information.

Molecular ferroelectric pyridin-2-ylmethanaminium perchlorate with phase transition induced by disorder of perchlorate

Molecular ferroelectrics are a kind of functional materials that have large application prospects. Comparing with the traditional inorganic ferroelectrics, they have some advantages, such as easy design, environment-friendliness, nontoxicity, and flexibility. In this study, a new molecular ferroelectric pyridin-2-ylmethanaminium perchlorate was discovered, which undergoes a ferroelectric phase transition at around 264.8 K. The spontaneous polarization reaches 0.22 μC cm-2, and the coercive fields are as small as 1.1 kV cm-1 at 202 K. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that the space group transforms from a polar space group of P21 at 173 K to a centrosymmetric space group of P21/c at 293 K. By analyzing the crystal structure changes below and above the phase transition temperature, it can be concluded that the phase transition is induced by the disorder of perchlorate. Its ferroelectricity was confirmed by the measurements of differential scanning calorimetry, dielectric and hysteresis loop.

Switchable Dielectric Phase Transition Triggered by Pendulum-Like Motion in an Ionic Co-crystal

Molecular-based ionic co-crystals, which have the merits of low-cost/easy fabrication processes and flexible structure and functionality, have already exhibited tremendous potential in molecular memory switches and other electric devices. However, dipole (ON/OFF switching) triggering is a huge challenge. Here, we introduce a pendulum-like dynamic strategy to induce the order-disorder transition of a co-crystal [C₅ H₇ N₃ Cl]₃ [Sb₂ Br₉ ] (compound 1). Here, the anion and cation act as a stator and a pendulum-like rotor (the source of the dielectric switch), respectively. The temperature-dependent dielectric and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analyses reveal that 1 undergoes a reversible phase transition, which stems from the order-disorder transition of the cations. The thermal ON/OFF switchable motions make 1 a promising candidate to promote the development of bulk crystals as artificial intelligent dielectric materials. In addition, the pendulum-like molecular dynamics and distinct arrangements of two coexisting ions with a notable offset effect promotes/hinders dipolar reorientation after dielectric transition and provides a rarely observed but fairly useful and feasible strategy for understanding and modulating the dipole motion in crystalline electrically polarizable materials.

Sequential dielectric phase transitions induced by the vibrations of water molecules in an organic-inorganic hybrid halide (N-(2-ammoniumethyl)piperazinium) CuCl5·2H2O

Organic-inorganic hybrids represent a new type of material showing promising properties. In this report, sequential dielectric transitions have been studied in an organic-inorganic hybrid halide, (N-2-AP)CuCl₅·2H₂O (N-2-AP = N-(2-ammoniumethyl)piperazinium) (1). The packing structure of 1 displays discrete [CuCl₅]^3- rectangular pyramids and N-2-AP cations, which are linked by two water molecules, forming infinite hydrogen bond networks with inorganic and organic components along the b-axis. Characterization studies containing differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements, variable-temperature X-ray diffraction and dielectric measurements were performed to investigate the phase transitions in 1. The deuterated sample of 1 (named 2) also exhibits a similar behavior to that in 1, but shows different phase transition temperatures in dielectric transitions. The arresting deuterated effect strongly confirms that the phase transitions in 1 are attributable to the local vibrations of water molecules resulting from the variation of hydrogen-bonding interactions.
