Crystal Engineering and Self-Assembled Nanoring Formation with Purine-CdII /HgII Supramolecular Frameworks

We report three complexes of CdII and HgII with two purine rare tautomers, N9-(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)-N6 -methoxyadenine, L1 and N7-(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)-N6 -methoxyadenine, L2, highlighting diverse crystallographic signatures exhibited by them. Influence of substituents, binding sites, steric effects and metal salts on the different modes of binding enabled an insight into metal-nucleobase interactions. L1 interacted with two and three equivalents of Cd(NO3 )2 .4H2 O and HgCl2 , respectively, while L2 interacted with two equivalents of HgCl2 , altogether leading to three different complexes (1 [C48 H48 Cd6 N34 O50 ], 2 [C12 H12 Cl4 Hg2 N6 O] and 3 [C12 H12 Cl2 HgN6 O]) possessing varied dimensionality and stabilising interactions. The photoluminescent properties of these coordination frameworks have also been probed. Notably, nanoring-like structures were obtained, as a result of self-assembly of 3 when investigated by transmission electron microscopy, additionally supported by molecular dynamics simulations.

Exfoliating a CdII -Purine Framework: Conversion of Nanosheets-to-Nanofibers and Studies of Elastic and Capacitive Properties

Layered bulk crystals are amenable to exfoliation to yield 2D nanosheets through isolation and intercalation processes, which could be further converted to 1D nanoscale structures. The latter inherit gross morphological and physical properties associated with the precursor structures. Herein, we report three purine-based crystal structures 1, 2, and 3, where 3 is obtained by a single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformation from 2 and is a conformational polymorph of 1. Next, we describe the sonication-assisted liquid exfoliation of 1, a Cd^II -purine coordination framework, into nanosheets and nanofibers in a solvent-dependent process. The exfoliation was carefully studied at low temperatures to ascertain this unique conversion. This work also features the determination of the Young's modulus and surface potential of the bioinspired Cd^II -based nanostructures by using amplitude modulation-frequency modulation atomic force microscopy and Kelvin probe force microscopy, respectively, revealing their interesting elastic and capacitive properties for their possible use in electronics and energy devices. Electron impedance spectroscopy measurements further established a higher value of capacitance for the exfoliated Cd^II framework as compared to the ligand alone.

Competition between hydrogen bonds and halogen bonds: a structural study

O–H hydrogen-bond donors and R–CC–I halogen-bond donors are close competitors for suitable acceptor sites in solid-state assembly.
