Unexpected Behavior in Thermal Conductivity of Confined Monolayer Water

Monolayer water can be formed under extreme confinement and will present distinctive thermodynamic properties compared with bulk water. In this work, we perform molecular dynamics simulations to study the thermal conductivity of monolayer water confined in graphene channels, finding an unexpected way of thermal conductivity of monolayer water dependent on its number density, which has a close correlation with the structure of water. The monolayer water is in an amorphous state, and its thermal conductivity increases linearly with the area density when the water density is low at first. Then, the thermal conductivity increases as the number density of water rises, which is attributed to the formation of a crystal structure and the reduction of crystal defects as the number of water molecules increases. After reaching the zenith, the thermal conductivity decreases rapidly owing to the formation of a wrinkle structure of monolayer water with excessive water molecules, which weakens the phonon dispersion. Moreover, we further investigate the remarkable effects of the channel height on both the structure and thermal conductivity of monolayer water. In summary, this study demonstrates the close connection between the thermal conductivity of monolayer water and its structure, contributing to not only expanding the understanding of the thermodynamic property of nanoconfined water but also benefiting the engineering applications for nanofluidics.

Water adsorption and dynamics on graphene and other 2D materials: Computational and experimental advances

The interaction of water and surfaces, at molecular level, is of critical importance for understanding processes such as corrosion, friction, catalysis and mass transport. The significant literature on interactions with single crystal metal surfaces should not obscure unknowns in the unique behaviour of ice and the complex relationships between adsorption, diffusion and long-range inter-molecular interactions. Even less is known about the atomic-scale behaviour of water on novel, non-metallic interfaces, in particular on graphene and other 2D materials. In this manuscript, we review recent progress in the characterisation of water adsorption on 2D materials, with a focus on the nano-material graphene and graphitic nanostructures; materials which are of paramount importance for separation technologies, electrochemistry and catalysis, to name a few. The adsorption of water on graphene has also become one of the benchmark systems for modern computational methods, in particular dispersion-corrected density functional theory (DFT). We then review recent experimental and theoretical advances in studying the single-molecular motion of water at surfaces, with a special emphasis on scattering approaches as they allow an unparalleled window of observation to water surface motion, including diffusion, vibration and self-assembly.

Atomistic Simulations of the Permeability and Dynamic Transportation Characteristics of Diamond Nanochannels

Through atomistic simulations, this work investigated the permeability of hexagonal diamond nanochannels for NaCl solution. Compared with the multilayer graphene nanochannel (with a nominal channel height of 6.8 Å), the diamond nanochannel exhibited better permeability. The whole transportation process can be divided into three stages: the diffusion stage, the transition stage and the flow stage. Increasing the channel height reduced the transition nominal pressure that distinguishes the diffusion and flow stages, and improved water permeability (with increased water flux but reduced ion retention rate). In comparison, channel length and solution concentration exerted ignorable influence on water permeability of the channel. Further simulations revealed that temperature between 300 and 350 K remarkably increased water permeability, accompanied by continuously decreasing transition nominal pressure. Additional investigations showed that the permeability of the nanochannel could be effectively tailored by surface functionalization. This work provides a comprehensive atomic insight into the transportation process of NaCl solution in a diamond nanochannel, and the established understanding could be beneficial for the design of advanced nanofluidic devices.

Dielectric Profile and Electromelting of a Monolayer of Water Confined in Graphene Slit Pore

A monolayer of water confined between two parallel graphene sheets exists in many different phases and exhibits fascinating dielectric properties that have been studied in experiments. In this work, we use molecular dynamics simulations to study how the dielectric properties of a confined monolayer of water is affected by its structure. We consider six of the popular nonpolarizable water models-SPC/E, SPC/Fw, TIP3P, TIP3P_M (modified), TIP4P-2005, and TIP4P-2005f-and find that the in-plane structure of the water molecules at ambient temperature and pressure is strongly dependent on the water model: all the 3-point water models considered here show square ice formation, whereas no such structural ordering is observed for the 4-point water models. This allows us to investigate the role of the in-plane structure of the water monolayer on its dielectric profile. Our simulations show an anomalous perpendicular dielectric constant compared to the bulk, and the models that do not exhibit ice formation show very different dielectric response along the channel width compared to models that exhibit square ice formation. We also demonstrate the occurrence of electromelting of the in-plane ordered water under the application of a perpendicular electric field and find that the critical field for electromelting strongly depends on the water model. Together, we have shown the dependence of confined water properties on the different water structures that it may take when sandwiched between bilayer graphene. These remarkable properties of confined water can be exploited in various nanofluidic devices, artificial ion channels, and molecular sieving.

Anomalously low friction of confined monolayer water with a quadrilateral structure

In this work, we explored how the structure of monolayer water confined between two graphene sheets is coupled to its dynamic behavior. Our molecular dynamics simulations show that there is a remarkable interrelation between the friction of confined water with two walls and its structure under extreme confinement. When the water molecules formed a regular quadrilateral structure, the friction coefficient is dramatically reduced. Such a low-friction coefficient can be attributed to the formation of long-range ordered hydrogen bond network, which not only decreases the structure corrugation in the direction perpendicular to the walls but also promotes the collective motion of the confined water. The regular quadrilateral structure can be formed only if the number density of confined water falls within a certain range. Higher number density results in larger structure corrugations, which increases the friction, while smaller number density leads to an irregular hydrogen bond network in which the collective motion cannot play the role. We demonstrated that there are four distinct stages in the diagram of the friction coefficient vs the number density of confined water. This research clearly established the connection between the dynamic characteristics of confined monolayer water and its structure, which is beneficial to further understand the mechanism of the high-speed water flow through graphene nanocapillaries observed in recent experiments.

Entropy and Random Walk Trails Water Confinement and Non-Thermal Equilibrium in Photon-Induced Nanocavities

Molecules near surfaces are regularly trapped in small cavitations. Molecular confinement, especially water confinement, shows intriguing and unexpected behavior including surface entropy adjustment; nevertheless, observations of entropic variation during molecular confinement are scarce. An experimental assessment of the correlation between surface strain and entropy during molecular confinement in tiny crevices is difficult because strain variances fall in the nanometer scale. In this work, entropic variations during water confinement in 2D nano/micro cavitations were observed. Experimental results and random walk simulations of water molecules inside different size nanocavitations show that the mean escaping time of molecular water from nanocavities largely deviates from the mean collision time of water molecules near surfaces, crafted by 157 nm vacuum ultraviolet laser light on polyacrylamide matrixes. The mean escape time distribution of a few molecules indicates a non-thermal equilibrium state inside the cavity. The time differentiation inside and outside nanocavities reveals an additional state of ordered arrangements between nanocavities and molecular water ensembles of fixed molecular length near the surface. The configured number of microstates correctly counts for the experimental surface entropy deviation during molecular water confinement. The methodology has the potential to identify confined water molecules in nanocavities with life science importance.

Dynamics of water confined in a graphene nanochannel: dependence of friction on graphene chirality

Numerous recent studies reveal that water transport through graphene-based nanochannels exhibits unconventional behavior. Theoretical and experimental works have reported that the dynamic behavior of the constrained water could be affected by the atomic structure, surface curvature, confinement height, pressure, and mechanical strain of the confining channel. However, few studies concern the role of graphene chirality in the dynamics of confined water. In the present study, using equilibrium molecular dynamics (EMD) simulations, we simulated the water flow through different graphene-based channels to investigate the influence of graphene chirality on the dynamic behavior of the confined water. The friction coefficient at the water/graphene interface was found to be dependent on the crystallographic orientation of the graphene wall. The results also indicated that the chirality-dependent friction behavior was affected by the confinement height of the channel. Detailed analyses on the physical origin of such a chirality effect suggested that the chirality-dependent friction was ascribed to the water-graphene interaction energy barrier variation when the water flow was driven along the armchair edge and zigzag edge. These findings are beneficial to the design of graphene-based nanofluidic devices.

Enhancement of oil flow in shale nanopores by manipulating friction and viscosity

Understanding the viscosity and friction of a fluid under nanoconfinement is the key to nanofluidics research. Existing work on nanochannel flow enhancement has been focused on simple systems with only one to two fluids considered such as water flow in carbon nanotubes, and large slip lengths have been found to be the main factor for the massive flow enhancement. In this study, we use molecular dynamics simulations to study the fluid flow of a ternary mixture of octane-carbon dioxide-water confined within two muscovite and kerogen surfaces. The results indicate that, in a muscovite slit, supercritical CO₂ (scCO₂) and H₂O both enhance the flow of octane due to (i) a decrease in the friction of octane with the muscovite wall because of the formation of thin layers of H₂O and scCO₂ near the surfaces; and (ii) a reduction in the viscosity of octane in nanoconfinement. Water reduces octane viscosity by weakening the interaction of octane with the muscovite surface, while scCO₂ reduces octane viscosity by weakening both octane-octane and octane-surface interactions. In a kerogen slit, water does not play any significant role in changing the friction or viscosity of octane. In contrast, scCO₂ reduces both the friction and the viscosity of octane, and the enhancement of octane flow is mainly caused by the reduction of viscosity. Our results highlight the importance of multicomponent interactions in nanoscale fluid transport. The results presented here also have a direct implication in enhanced oil recovery in unconventional reservoirs.
