Synthesis and Characterization of a Luminescent Cyclic Poly(ethylene oxide)-Polypyridyl Ruthenium Complex

We report the synthesis of a macrocyclic poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) connected by one [Ru(bpy)₃]²⁺ unit (where bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine), a photoactive metal complex that provides photosensitivity and potential biomedical applications to this polymer structure. The PEO chain provides biocompatibility, water solubility, and topological play. The macrocycles were successfully synthesized by copper-free click cycloaddition between a bifunctional dibenzocyclooctyne (DBCO)-PEO precursor and 4,4'-diazido-2,2'-bipyridine, followed by complexation with [Ru(bpy)₂Cl₂]. The cyclic product accumulated efficiently in MCF7 cancer cells and exhibited a longer fluorescence lifetime than its linear analogue, likely due to differences in the accessibility of the ligand-centered/intraligand states of Ru polypyridyls in both topologies.

Kinetics and Mechanism of the Hydrolysis and Rearrangement Processes within the Assembly-Disassembly-Organization-Reassembly Synthesis of Zeolites

The hydrolysis (disassembly, D) and rearrangement (organization, O) steps of the assembly–disassembly–organization–reassembly (ADOR) process for the synthesis of zeolites have been studied. Germanium-rich UTL was subjected to hydrolysis conditions in water to understand the effects of temperature (100, 92, 85, 81, 77, and 70 °C). Samples were taken periodically over an 8–37 h period, and each sample was analyzed by powder X-ray diffraction. The results show that the hydrolysis step is solely dependent on the presence of liquid water, whereas the rearrangement is dependent on the temperature of the system. The kinetics have been investigated using the Avrami–Erofeev model. With increasing temperature, an increase in the rate of reaction for the rearrangement step was observed, and the Arrhenius equation was used to ascertain an apparent activation energy for the rearrangement from the kinetic product of the disassembly (IPC-1P) to the thermodynamic product of the rearrangement (IPC-2P). From this information, a mechanism for this transformation can be postulated.

Effects of precursor topology and synthesis under crowding conditions on the structure of single-chain polymer nanoparticles

By means of molecular dynamics simulations, we investigate the formation of single-chain nanoparticles through intramolecular cross-linking of polymer chains, in the presence of their precursors acting as purely steric crowders in concentrated solution. In the case of linear precursors, the structure of the resulting SCNPs is weakly affected by the density at which the synthesis is performed. Crowding has significant effects if ring precursors are used: higher concentrations lead to the formation of SCNPs with more compact and spherical morphologies. Such SCNPs retain in the swollen state (high dilution) the crumpled globular conformations adopted by the ring precursors in the crowded solutions. Increasing the concentration of both the linear and ring precursors up to 30% leads to faster formation of the respective SCNPs, prior to deceleration expected at higher densities. The results presented here propose promising new routes for the synthesis of globular SCNPs, which are usually elusive by conventional methods.
