Metal-Organic Frameworks through the Lens of Artificial Intelligence: A Comprehensive Review

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of hybrid porous materials that have gained prominence as a noteworthy material with varied applications. Currently, MOFs are in extensive use, particularly in the realms of energy and catalysis. The synthesis of these materials poses considerable challenges, and their computational analysis is notably intricate due to their complex structure and versatile applications in the field of material science. Density functional theory (DFT) has helped researchers in understanding reactions and mechanisms, but it is costly and time-consuming and requires bigger systems to perform these calculations. Machine learning (ML) techniques were adopted in order to overcome these problems by implementing ML in material data sets for synthesis, structure, and property predictions of MOFs. These predictions are fast, efficient, and accurate and do not require heavy computing. In this review, we discuss ML models used in MOF and their incorporation with artificial intelligence (AI) in structure and property predictions. The advantage of AI in this field would accelerate research, particularly in synthesizing novel MOFs with multiple properties and applications oriented with minimum information.

Catalytic properties of the ferryl ion in the solid state: a computational review

This review summarises the last findings in the emerging field of heterogeneous catalytic oxidation of light alkanes by ferryl species supported on solid-state systems such as the conversion of methane into methanol by FeO-MOF74.

The investigation of methane storage at the Ni-MOF-74 material: a periodic DFT calculation

To develop a high-performance methane storage material, an understanding of the mechanism and electronic interactions between methane and the material is essential. In this study, we performed detailed theoretical analyses to investigate the methane storage capacity of Ni-MOF-74 using a large-scale periodic DFT code CONQUEST. In a single pore of the unit cell, we considered three possible sites, iSBU, L, and P sites, where iSBU is the inorganic secondary building unit with a metal center, and L is the linker consisting of the organic building unit, while the P site is the vacuum site in the center of the pore. It shows that the methane molecule adsorption possesses the largest methane molecule adsorption energy on the iSBU site. Our calculations indicate that both C-HO and weak agostic interactions exist between the methane molecule and the iSBU site. The adsorption energy of one methane molecule on the iSBU site is in good agreement with previous experimental and theoretical studies. The calculation of the stepwise methane molecule adsorption shows that the first six methane molecules can first occupy the iSBU sites via C-HO and weak agostic interactions. The second six methane molecules are adsorbed on the remaining L sites, where the C-Hπ interaction becomes important, leading to the synergistic effect together with the C-HO interaction to enhance the adsorption energy of the methane molecule. Finally, it can adsorb up to sixteen CH4 molecules in a single pore of a unit cell at Ni-MOF-74. Moreover, we conducted DOS and EDD analyses, which clearly show that the interactions play a vital role in the adsorption of a methane molecule on Ni-MOF-74, especially the C-HO interaction.

Unveiling the catalytic potential of the Fe(iv)oxo species for the oxidation of hydrocarbons in the solid state

We have investigated the three steps in the conversion of methane into methanol by Fe(iv)Ooxo species supported in MOF-74. We use ab initio MD and static approximations to predict the reaction barriers using enthalpy ΔH and free energy ΔG.

Exceptional hydrogen storage achieved by screening nearly half a million metal-organic frameworks

Few hydrogen adsorbents balance high usable volumetric and gravimetric capacities. Although metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have recently demonstrated progress in closing this gap, the large number of MOFs has hindered the identification of optimal materials. Here, a systematic assessment of published databases of real and hypothetical MOFs is presented. Nearly 500,000 compounds were screened computationally, and the most promising were assessed experimentally. Three MOFs with capacities surpassing that of IRMOF-20, the record-holder for balanced hydrogen capacity, are demonstrated: SNU-70, UMCM-9, and PCN-610/NU-100. Analysis of trends reveals the existence of a volumetric ceiling at ∼40 g H2 L-1. Surpassing this ceiling is proposed as a new capacity target for hydrogen adsorbents. Counter to earlier studies of total hydrogen uptake in MOFs, usable capacities in the highest-capacity materials are negatively correlated with density and volumetric surface area. Instead, capacity is maximized by increasing gravimetric surface area and porosity. This suggests that property/performance trends for total capacities may not translate to usable capacities.

Carbon flakes based metal organic frameworks for H2, CH4 and CO2 gas storage: a GCMC simulation study

In this study, new metal organic frameworks have been designed by modifying the linker of IRMOF-1 with different carbon flakes (circular, rectangular and rhombus).
