Simulating the Fluorescence of the Locally Excited State of DMABN in Solvents of Different Polarities

4-(N,N-Dimethylamino)benzonitrile (DMABN) is a luminescent probe that can be used for tracking changes in the surrounding solvent due to the large change in polarity between its ground and excited states. An important characteristic of DMABN is that it exhibits dual fluorescence with two different emission energies that can be monitored, allowing for better characterization of the surrounding system. The first excited state is called the locally excited (LE) state and is characterized by the movement of charge over the conjugated ring structure. In nonpolar solvents and in the gas phase, the fluorescence of DMABN is entirely attributed to the transition from the near-planar LE state. In more polar environments, emission occurs from both the LE and a second excited state, corresponding to a twisted intramolecular charge-transfer (ICT) structure. For the sake of simplicity, this work considers transitions between only the ground and LE state. Molecular mechanical force field models of DMABN in its ground and LE states have been developed to investigate the sensitivity of the LE state to the polarity of the solvent. Both nonpolarizable and polarizable force fields were developed to simulate the molecule in a series of 10 different solvents of different polarities. The calculated Stokes shift of DMABN increases with increasing orientation polarizability of the surrounding solvent, which is the expected trend, as seen in experimental studies.

Long Vibrational Lifetime R-Selenocyanate Probes for Ultrafast Infrared Spectroscopy: Properties and Synthesis

Ultrafast infrared vibrational spectroscopy is widely used for the investigation of dynamics in systems from water to model membranes. Because the experimental observation window is limited to a few times the probe's vibrational lifetime, a frequent obstacle for the measurement of a broad time range is short molecular vibrational lifetimes (typically a few to tens of picoseconds). Five new long-lifetime aromatic selenocyanate vibrational probes have been synthesized and their vibrational properties characterized. These probes are compared to commercial phenyl selenocyanate. The vibrational lifetimes range between ∼400 and 500 ps in complex solvents, which are some of the longest room-temperature vibrational lifetimes reported to date. In contrast to vibrations that are long-lived in simple solvents such as CCl₄, but become much shorter in complex solvents, the probes discussed here have ∼400 ps lifetimes in complex solvents and even longer in simple solvents. One of them has a remarkable lifetime of 1235 ps in CCl₄. These probes have a range of molecular sizes and geometries that can make them useful for placement into different complex materials due to steric reasons, and some of them have functionalities that enable their synthetic incorporation into larger molecules, such as industrial polymers. We investigated the effect of a range of electron-donating and electron-withdrawing para-substituents on the vibrational properties of the CN stretch. The probes have a solvent-independent linear relationship to the Hammett substituent parameter when evaluated with respect to the CN vibrational frequency and the ipso ¹³C NMR chemical shift.

Salt Effect in Ion-Pair Dynamics after Bimolecular Photoinduced Electron Transfer in a Room-Temperature Ionic Liquid

Bimolecular photoinduced electron transfer between perylene and two quenchers was investigated in an imidazolium room-temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) and in a dipolar solvent mixture of the same viscosity using transient absorption on the subpicosecond to submicrosecond time scales. Whereas charge separation dynamics were similar in both solvents, significant differences were observed in the temporal evolution of the ensuing radical ions: although small, the free-ion yield is significantly larger in the RTIL, and recombination of the ion pair to the triplet state of perylene is more efficient in the dipolar solvent. The temporal evolution of reactant, ion, and triplet state populations could be well reproduced using unified encounter theory. This analysis reveals that the observed differences can be explained by the strong screening of the Coulomb potential in the ion pair by the ionic solvent. In essence, RTILs favor free ions compared to highly dipolar solvents of the same viscosity.
