High-Throughput Screening for Boride Superconductors

A high-throughput screening using density functional calculations is performed to search for stable boride superconductors from the existing materials database. The workflow employs the fast frozen-phonon method as the descriptor to evaluate the superconducting properties quickly. Twenty-three stable candidates were identified during the screening. The superconductivity was obtained earlier experimentally or computationally for almost all found binary compounds. Previous studies on ternary borides are very limited. Our extensive search among ternary systems confirmed superconductivity in known systems and found several new compounds. Among these discovered superconducting ternary borides, TaMo2B2 shows the highest superconducting temperature of ∼12 K. Most predicted compounds were synthesized previously; therefore, our predictions can be examined experimentally. Our work also demonstrates that the boride systems can have diverse structural motifs that lead to superconductivity.

Electronic Structure and Chemical Bonding of the First-, Second-, and Third-Row-Transition-Metal Monoborides: The Formation of Quadruple Bonds in RhB, RuB, and TcB

Boron presents an important role in chemistry, biology, and materials science. Diatomic transition-metal borides (MBs) are the building blocks of many complexes and materials, and they present unique electronic structures with interesting and peculiar properties and a variety of bonding schemes which are analyzed here. In the first part of this paper, we present a review on the available experimental and theoretical studies on the first-row-transition-metal borides, i.e., ScB, TiB, VB, CrB, MnB, FeB, CoB, NiB, CuB, and ZnB; the second-row-transition-metal borides, i.e., YB, ZrB, NbB, MoB, TcB, RuB, RhB, PdB, AgB, and CdB; and the third-row-transition-metal borides, i.e., LaB, HfB, TaB, WB, ReB, OsB, IrB, PtB, AuB, and HgB. Consequently, in the second part, the second- and third-row MBs are studied via DFT calculations using the B3LYP, TPSSh, and MN15 functionals and, in some cases, via multi-reference methods, MRCISD+Q, in conjunction with the aug-cc-pVQZ-PPM/aug-cc-pVQZB basis sets. Specifically, bond distances, dissociation energies, frequencies, dipole moments, and natural NPA charges are reported. Comparisons between MB molecules along the three rows are presented, and their differences and similarities are analyzed. The bonding of the diatomic borides is also described; it is found that, apart from RhB(X1Σ+), which was just recently found to form quadruple bonds, RuB(X2Δ) and TcB(X3Σ-) also form quadruple σ2σ2π2π2 bonds in their X states. Moreover, to fill the gap existing in the current literature, here, we calculate the TcB molecule.

Structure, Stability, and Mechanical Properties of Boron-Rich Mo-B Phases: A Computational Study

Molybdenum borides were studied theoretically using first-principles calculations, parameterized lattice model, and global optimization techniques to determine stable crystal structures. Our calculations reveal the structures of known Mo-B phases, attaining close agreement with experiment. Following our developed lattice model, we describe in detail the crystal structure of boron-rich MoB_x phases with 3 ≤ x ≤ 9 as the hexagonal P6₃/mmc-MoB₃ structure with Mo atoms partially replaced by triangular boron units. The most energetically stable arrangement of these B₃ units corresponds to their uniform distribution in the bulk, which leads to the formation of a disordered nonstoichiometric phase, with ordering arising at compositions close to x = 5 because of a strong repulsive interaction between neighboring B₃ units. The most energetically favorable structures of MoB_x correspond to the compositions 4 ≲ x ≤ 5, with MoB₅ being the boron-richest stable phase. The estimated hardness of MoB₅ is 37-39 GPa, suggesting that the boron-rich phases are potentially superhard.

We present an extensive global structural optimization to identify the crystal structures of IrP₃ using the developed CALYPSO method under both ambient and high-pressure conditions.

Effect of pressure on the structural, electronic and mechanical properties of ultraincompressible W2B

The crystal structures of W₂B have been extensively investigated by the swarm structure searching method at ambient and high-pressure conditions. Our calculated thermodynamic enthalpy data suggests that the tetragonal phase with I4/m symmetry is the most stable at 0–50 GPa. The theoretical elastic properties and phonon spectroscopy confirmed that I4/m W₂B is both mechanically and dynamically stable. The calculated band structure and density of states show that I4/m W₂B is metallic and the electronic properties are sensitive to changes in external pressure with the occurrence of an electronic topological transition. The simulated high elastic modulus, hardness and strain–stress relationships reveal that W₂B exhibits excellent ultraincompressible properties and high strength. The combination of superior conductivity and mechanical properties reveals that W₂B can be used for hard coatings and electrical measurements.

Pressure-induced phase transition, metallization and superconductivity in ZrS2

Zirconium disulfide (ZrS2) is an exemplary case among layered materials that exhibit unusual electronic and vibrational properties, with applications in potential photovoltaic and single-layer transistor materials. Here, we examine the effect of pressure on the structural stability, phonon dispersion, electronic properties and electron-phonon coupling of ZrS2 using first-principles calculations. Our results unravel that ZrS2 undergoes several pressure-induced phase transformations from the ambient-pressure P3[combining macron]m1 structure to a monoclinic P21/m structure at 2.0 GPa, to an orthorhombic Immm structure at 5.6 GPa, and to a tetragonal I4/mmm structure at 25.0 GPa. The electronic band calculations indicate that the layered P3[combining macron]m1 and P21/m structures are narrow-gap semiconductors. The gaps of the above two phases, which are normal semiconductors, decrease with pressure. Our results show that ZrS2 reaches the metallic state by a P21/m → Immm phase transition and keeps its metallic state in the I4/mmm phase. A pressure-driven evolution of the topological Fermi surface has been uncovered. The electron-phonon coupling results identify superconducting states in both metallic Immm and I4/mmm structures. Our research shows that pressure is efficient in the modulation of the bonding states, crystal structures and electronic properties of ZrS2, which will stimulate further high-pressure structural and conductive measurements.
