A New Pt(II) Complex with Anionic s-Triazine Based NNO-Donor Ligand: Synthesis, X-ray Structure, Hirshfeld Analysis and DFT Studies

The reaction of PtCl₂ with s-triazine-type ligand (HTriaz) (1:1) in acetone under heating afforded a new [Pt(Triaz)Cl] complex. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the ligand (HTriaz) is an NNO tridentate chelate via two N-atoms from the s-triazine and hydrazone moieties and one oxygen from the deprotonated phenolic OH. The coordination environment of the Pt(II) is completed by one Cl⁻¹ ion trans to the Pt-N_(hydrazone). Hirshfeld surface analysis showed that the most dominant interactions are the H···H, H···C and O···H intermolecular contacts. These interactions contributed by 60.9, 11.2 and 8.3% from the whole fingerprint area, respectively. Other minor contributions from the Cl···H, C···N, N···H and C···C contacts were also detected. Among these interactions, the most significant contacts are the O···H, H···C and H···H interactions. The amounts of the electron transfer from the ligand groups to Pt(II) metal center were predicted using NBO calculations. Additionally, the electronic spectra were assigned based on the TD-DFT calculations.

Photoinduced host-to-guest electron transfer in a self-assembled coordination cage

Light–powered host–guest charge transfer (HGCT) is shown for a coordination cage based on electron-rich phenothiazines, containing an anthraquinone acceptor as guest. Transient absorption spectroscopy and spectroelectrochemistry data is presented.

Manipulating spatial alignment of donor and acceptor in host-guest MOF for TADF

Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) was achieved when electron-rich triphenylene (Tpl) donors (D) were confined to a cage-based porous MOF host (NKU-111) composed of electron-deficient 2,4,6-tri(pyridin-4-yl)-1,3,5-triazine (Tpt) acceptor (A) as the ligand. The spatially-separated D and A molecules in a face-to-face stacking pattern generated strong through-space charge transfer (CT) interactions with a small singlet-triplet excited states energy splitting (∼0.1 eV), which enabled TADF. The resulting Tpl@NKU-111 exhibited an uncommon enhanced emission intensity as the temperature increased. Extensive steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopic measurements and first-principles simulations revealed the chemical and electronic structure of this compound in both the ground and low-lying excited states. A double-channel (T1, T2) intersystem crossing mechanism with S1 was found and explained as single-directional CT from the degenerate HOMO-1/HOMO of the guest donor to the LUMO + 1 of one of the nearest acceptors. The rigid skeleton of the compound and effective through-space CT enhanced the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY). A maximum PLQY of 57.36% was achieved by optimizing the Tpl loading ratio in the host framework. These results indicate the potential of the MOFs for the targeted construction and optimization of TADF materials.

Recent developments in the construction and applications of platinum-based metallacycles and metallacages via coordination

Coordination-driven suprastructures have attracted much interest due to their unique properties. Among these structures, platinum-based architectures have been broadly studied due to their facile preparation. The resultant two- or three-dimensional (2D or 3D) systems have many advantages over their precursors, such as improved emission tuning, sensitivity as sensors, and capture and release of guests, and they have been applied in biomedical diagnosis as well as in catalysis. Herein, we review the recent results related to platinum-based coordination-driven self-assembly (CDSA), and the text is organized to emphasizes both the synthesis of new metallacycles and metallacages and their various applications.

Supramolecular Photocatalysis by Utilizing the Host-Guest Charge-Transfer Interaction: Visible-Light-Induced Generation of Triplet Anthracenes for [4+2] Cycloaddition Reactions

Supramolecular photocatalysis via charge-transfer excitation of a host-guest complex was developed by use of the macrocyclic boronic ester [2+2]_BTH-F containing highly electron-deficient difluorobenzothiadiazole moieties. In the presence of a catalytic amount of [2+2]_BTH-F , the triplet excited state of anthracene was generated from the charge-transfer excited state of anthracene@[2+2]_BTH-F by visible-light irradiation, and cycloaddition of the excited anthracene with several dienes and alkenes proceeded in a [4+2] manner in high yields.

Switchable organoplatinum metallacycles with high quantum yields and tunable fluorescence wavelengths

The preparation of fluorescent discrete supramolecular coordination complexes (SCCs) has attracted considerable attention within the fields of supramolecular chemistry, materials science, and biological sciences. However, many challenges remain. For instance, fluorescence quenching often occurs due to the heavy-atom effect arising from the Pt(II)-based building block in Pt-based SCCs. Moreover, relatively few methods exist for tuning of the emission wavelength of discrete SCCs. Thus, it is still challenging to construct discrete SCCs with high fluorescence quantum yields and tunable fluorescence wavelengths. Here we report nine organoplatinum fluorescent metallacycles that exhibit high fluorescence quantum yields and tunable fluorescence wavelengths through simple regulation of their photoinduced electron transfer (PET) and intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) properties. Moreover, 3D fluorescent films and fluorescent inks for inkjet printing were fabricated using these metallacycles. This work provides a strategy to solve the fluorescence quenching problem arising from the heavy-atom effect of Pt(II), and offers an alternative approach to tune the emission wavelengths of discrete SCCs in the same solvent.

Fluorescent supramolecular coordination complexes are of interest for chemical sensing and optical devices. Here the authors synthesize nine organoplatinum metallacycles with high quantum yields, whose fluorescence wavelengths are tuned through manipulation of their photoinduced electron transfer and intramolecular charge transfer properties.
