Self-Assembly of Rhenium(I) Double-Stranded Helicate and Mesocate from Flexible Ditopic Benzimidazolyl/Naphthanoimidazolyl N-Donor and Rigid Bis-Chelating Hydroxyphenylbenzimidazolyl N∩OH-Donor Ligands: Synthesis, Characterization, and Photophysical and B-DNA Docking Studies

The self-assembly of three rheniumtricarbonyl core-based supramolecular coordination complexes (SCCs), fac-[Re(CO)3(μ-L)(μ-L')Re(CO)3] (1-3) was carried out using Re2(CO)10, rigid bis-chelating ligand (HO∩N-Ph-N∩OH (L1) (where HO∩N = 2-hydroxyphenylbenzimidazolyl), and flexible ditopic N-donor ligands (L2 = bis(3-((1H-benzoimidazol-1-yl)methyl)-2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)methane, L3 = bis(3-((1H-naphtho[2,3-d]imidazol-1-yl)methyl)-2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)methane, L4 = bis(4-(naphtho[2,3-d]imidazol-1-yl-methyl)phenyl)methane) via a one-pot solvothermal approach. In the solid state, the dinuclear SCCs adopt heteroleptic double-stranded helicate and meso-helicate architectures. The supramolecular structures of the complexes are retained in the solution based on the 1H NMR and electrospray ionization (ESI)-mass analysis. The spectral and photophysical properties of the complexes were studied both experimentally and using time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations. All of the supramolecules exhibited emission in both solution and solid states. Theoretical studies were conducted to determine the chemical reactivity parameters, molecular electrostatic potential surface plots, natural population, and Hirshfeld analysis for complexes 1-3. Additionally, molecular docking studies were carried out for complexes 1-3 with B-DNA.

Calix[4]arene-Analogous Technetium Supramolecules

Calix[4]arene-analogous technetium supramolecules (1 and 2) were assembled using (NBu₄)[Tc₂(μ-Cl)₃(CO)₆] and neutral flexible bidentate nitrogen-donor ligands (L¹ and L²) consisting of four arene units covalently joined via methylene units. The neutral homoleptic technetium macrocycles adopt a partial cone/cone-shaped conformation in the solid state. These supramolecules are the first example of fac-[Tc(CO)₃]⁺ core-based metallocalix[4]arenes and second example of fac-[Tc(CO)₃]⁺ core-based metallomacrocycles. Structurally similar fac-[Re(CO)₃]⁺ core-based macrocycles (3 and 4) were also prepared using [Re(CO)₅X] (where X = Cl or Br) and L¹ or L². The products were characterized spectroscopically and by X-ray analysis.

Synthesis and Light-Harvesting Functions of Ring-Shaped Re(I) Trinuclear Complexes Connected with an Emissive Ru(II) Complex

Ring-shaped Re(I) multinuclear complexes (Re(I) rings) in which Re(I)-diimine-biscarbonyl complexes are connected to each other through bisphosphine bridging ligands exhibit very suitable photophysical and electrochemical properties as redox photosensitizers. We developed two approaches for synthesizing Re(I) rings connected with a Ru(II) complex: cyclization of a linear Re(I) trinuclear complex connected with a Ru(II) complex and Mizoroki-Heck coupling of a ring-shaped Re(I) trinuclear complex and a Ru(II) complex. Photophysical measurements of these heteromultinuclear complexes and comparisons with their model complexes indicated that they exhibit efficient light-harvesting abilities, where energy transfer from the excited ring-shaped Re(I) trinuclear complex unit to the Ru(II) complex unit proceeds efficiently.

Targeted Synthesis of NIR Luminescent Rhenium Diimine cis,trans-[Re( N N )(CO)2 (L)2 ]n+ Complexes Containing N-Donor Axial Ligands: Photophysical, Electrochemical, and Theoretical Studies

The combined action of ultraviolet irradiation and microwave heating onto acetonitrile solution of [Re( N N )(CO)₃ (NCMe)]OTf ( N N =phenantroline and neocuproine) afforded cis,trans-Re( N N )(CO)₂ (NCMe)₂ ]⁺ acetonitrile derivatives. Substitution of relatively labile NCMe with a series of aromatic N-donor ligands (pyridine, pyrazine, 4,4'-bipyridine, N-methyl-4,4'-bipyridine) gave a novel family of the diimine cis,trans-[Re( N N )(CO)₂ (L)₂ ]⁺ complexes. Photophysical studies of the obtained compounds in solution revealed unusually high absorption across the visible region and NIR phosphorescence with emission band maxima ranging from 711 to 805 nm. The nature of emissive excited states was studied using DFT calculations to show dominant contribution of ³ MLCT (dπ(Re)→π*( N N )) character. Electrochemical (CV and DPV) studies of the monocationic diimine complexes revealed one reduction and one oxidation wave assigned to reduction of the diimine moiety and oxidation of the rhenium center, respectively.

Anthracene-Based Fluorophore and Its Re(I) Complexes: Investigation of Electrical Properties and Schottky Diode Behavior

A novel fluorophore (HL) [1-((E)-(quinolin-8-ylimino)methyl)anthracen-2-ol] using a suitably designed anthrol and quinoline derivative was synthesized and well characterized. Then, two Re(I) complexes with the fac-[Re(CO)₃] ⁺ moiety were prepared with the ligand under different reaction conditions. Both the complexes [Re(L)(CO)₃] (1) and [Re(HL)(CO)₃Cl] (2) absorbed in the visible region. Steady-state fluorescence measurements and time-correlated single-photon count experiments were performed to elucidate the nature of the excited state. The ground- and excited-state geometries were theoretically investigated using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The electrical properties of the ligand and the complexes have been explored with the help of a sandwich-structured thin-film device of an Al/sample/indium tin oxide (ITO) configuration at room temperature. The thermionic emission (TE) theory was adopted for the extraction of Schottky diode parameters such as ideality factor, barrier height, and series resistance. Further, the space-charge-limited current (SCLC) theory was employed for a better understanding of the charge transport phenomenon.

Efficient trinuclear Ru(ii)-Re(i) supramolecular photocatalysts for CO2 reduction based on a new tris-chelating bridging ligand built around a central aromatic ring

We have designed and synthesized a new tris-chelating polypyridine ligand (bpy₃Ph) suitable to be used as a bridging ligand (BL) for constructing various supramolecular photocatalysts.

We have designed and synthesized a new tris-chelating polypyridine ligand (bpy₃Ph) suitable to be used as a bridging ligand (BL) for constructing various supramolecular photocatalysts. This BL is a phenylene ring with three ethylene chains at 1, 3, and 5 positions, of which the other terminals are connected to 2,2′-bipyridine moieties. The ligand bpy₃Ph has been used to prepare, according to a multi-step synthetic protocol, trinuclear supramolecular photocatalysts containing different metal subunits. In particular, the compounds Ru2Re and RuRe2 have been prepared, containing different ratios of components based on Ru(dmb)₃²⁺-type and Re(dmb)(CO)₃Cl-type units (dmb = 4,4′-dimethyl-2,2′-bipyridine), which can play the roles of photosensitizers and catalyst units for photocatalytic CO₂ reduction, respectively. The trinuclear model Ru3 and mononuclear and dinuclear Ru and Ru2 precursor metal complexes, containing free chelating sites, have also been synthesized using the same bridging ligand. The absorption spectra, redox behaviour and photophysical properties of the new species indicate that there is no strong electronic interaction among the Ru and Re units. The trinuclear complexes Ru2Re and RuRe2 could photocatalyze CO₂ reduction to CO with high selectivity (up to 97%), high efficiency (Φ_COs of 28% and 25%, respectively: BIH as a reductant), and high durability (TON_COs of 5232 and 6038, respectively: BIH as a reductant) which are the largest TONs for CO₂ reduction using supramolecular photocatalysts in homogeneous solutions. The absence of negligible accumulation of the mono-reduced form of the photosensitizer indicates fast electron transfer to the catalyst unit(s) through the relatively large bridging ligand and is proposed to contribute to the outstanding photocatalytic properties of the new species, including their durability. The relevant photocatalytic behaviour of the new systems indicates new avenues for the design of extended bridging ligands capable of efficiently and functionally integrating photosensitizers and catalysts towards the preparation of new, larger supramolecular photocatalysts for selective CO₂ reduction.

Synthesis of an Emissive Spectacle-Shaped Hexanuclear Rhenium(I) Complex

Ring-shaped multinuclear Re(I) complexes (Re(I) rings) have the potential to function as useful units in multifarious photofunctional compounds because of their flexibility in molecular design and various photofunctions. The first synthetic example of the coupling reaction using a Re(I) ring as a building block to synthesize a novel spectacle-shaped hexanuclear complex is reported herein. This complex shows an efficient intramolecular energy transfer to accumulate the excitation energy into the central Re(I) units, and has suitable photophysical properties as a photosensitizer.

fac-Re(CO)3-based neutral heteroleptic tetrahedrons

Four new flexible ditopic nitrogen donors possessing a xylene spacer and 2-phenylbenzimidazolyl or its derivatives as a coordinating unit and one rigid bis-chelating ligand consisting of two 2-hydroxyphenylbenzimidazolyl motifs and a central phenylene spacer were synthesized and further used with Re₂(CO)₁₀ for making a new family of neutral, heteroleptic tetrahedral-shaped supramolecular coordination complexes via a one-pot approach. The new ligands and the complexes were characterized using various analytical and spectroscopic methods. The molecular structures of the complexes were determined using single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, which reveal that four rhenium cores are arranged in the vertices, and four ligands are at the edges of the tetrahedron.

Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction Using Various Heteroleptic Diimine-Diphosphine Cu(I) Complexes as Photosensitizers

The development of efficient redox-photosensitizers based on the earth-abundant metal ions as an alternative toward noble- and/or rare-metal based photosensitizers is very desirable. In recent years, heteroleptic diimine-diphosphine Cu(I) complexes have been well investigated as one of the most remarkable candidates because of their great potentials as efficient photosensitizers. Here, we investigated the effects of the structure of the diphosphine ligands on the photosensitizing abilities using a series of Cu(I) complexes bearing 2,9-dimethyl-4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (dmpp) and various diphosphine ligands in order to explore the suitable structure for the photosensitizing reactions. The number of methylene chains between the two phosphorous atoms in the diphosphine ligands was systematically changed from two to four, and the relationship between the length of the carbon chains and the photosensitizing abilities were investigated by conducting photocatalytic CO₂ reduction with the Cu(I) complexes as photosensitizers. Turnover frequencies of the CO₂ reduction drastically increased with increasing the length of the carbon chains. The systematic study herein reported suggests that the large P-Cu-P angles should be one of the most important factors for enhancing the photosensitizing abilities.

Supramolecular Construction of Cyanide-Bridged ReI Diimine Multichromophores

The reactions of labile [Re(diimine)(CO)₃(H₂O)]⁺ precursors (diimine = 2,2'-bipyridine, bpy; 1,10-phenanthroline, phen) with dicyanoargentate anion produce the dirhenium cyanide-bridged compounds [{Re(diimine)(CO)₃}₂CN)]⁺ (1 and 2). Substitution of the axial carbonyl ligands in 2 for triphenylphosphine gives the derivative [{Re(phen)(CO)₂(PPh₃)}₂CN]⁺ (3), while the employment of a neutral metalloligand [Au(PPh₃)(CN)] affords heterobimetallic complex [{Re(phen)(CO)₃}NCAu(PPh₃)]⁺ (4). Furthermore, the utilization of [Au(CN)₂]^-, [Pt(CN)₄]^2-, and [Fe(CN)₆]^4-/3- cyanometallates leads to the higher nuclearity aggregates [{Re(diimine)(CO)₃NC} _xM] ^m+ (M = Au, x = 2, 5 and 6; Pt, x = 4, 7 and 8; Fe, x = 6, 9 and 10). All novel compounds were characterized crystallographically. Assemblies 1-8 are phosphorescent both in solution and in the solid state; according to the DFT analysis, the optical properties are mainly associated with charge transfer from Re tricarbonyl motif to the diimine fragment. The energy of this process can be substantially modified by the properties of the ancillary ligands that allows to attain near-IR emission for 3 (λ_em = 737 nm in CH₂Cl₂). The Re-Fe^II/III complexes 9 and 10 are not luminescent but exhibit low energy absorptions, reaching 846 nm (10) due to Re^I → Fe^III transition.

Synthesis of Re(I) Rings Comprising Different Re(I) Units and Their Light-Harvesting Abilities

Trimethylamine N-oxide (Me₃NO) could selectively remove only one CO ligand from fac-[Re(N^N)(CO)₃(PR₂R')]⁺ (N^N = diimine ligand), whereby only the CO ligand in the trans position to the phosphorus ligand was selectively removed to give cis,trans-[Re^I(N^N)(CO)₂(PR₂R')(L)] ⁿ⁺ in good yields. This decarbonylation reaction using Me₃NO was found to be especially useful for synthesizing biscarbonyl Re(I) complexes with electron-withdrawing groups in the diimine ligand, which could not be synthesized or were obtained only in low yields by the photochemical method. Me₃NO also selectively removed the carbonyl ligands in the trans position to the phosphorus ligands from the edge Re(I) complex units, which have the fac-[Re(N^N)(CO)₃(PR₂R')]⁺ structure, in linear-shaped Re(I) multinuclear complexes. This reaction was successfully applied to synthesize a novel precursor with ring-shaped multinuclear Re complexes (Re-rings) comprising different kinds of Re(I) units. The newly synthesized Re-rings, which consist of one Re unit with a 4,4'-bis(trifluoromethyl)-2,2'-bipyridine (CF₃bpy) ligand and one or two Re unit(s) with a 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) ligand, showed almost quantitative excitation-energy harvesting ability from the Re unit(s) with bpy to that with CF₃bpy.

Sulfate Donor Based Dinuclear Heteroleptic Triple-Stranded Helicates from Sulfite and Ditopic Nitrogen Donor Ligands and Their Transformation to Dinuclear Homoleptic Double-Stranded Mesocates

Sulfate donor based supramolecular coordination complexes [{ fac-Re(CO)₃}(μ-SO₄)(L ⁿ)₂{ fac-Re(CO)₃}] (1-3) were obtained using ditopic N donors (L ⁿ; n = 1-3), NaHSO₃, and Re₂(CO)₁₀ in a one-pot, multicomponent, coordination-driven self-assembly approach, in which SO₃^2- becomes oxidized to SO₄^2- during the reaction and acts as a building framework. Complexes 1-3 were characterized using IR, ESI-TOF-MS, and ¹H NMR spectroscopy. The structures of complexes 1-3 were confirmed using single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The transformation of the dinuclear heteroleptic triple-stranded helicate to the dinuclear homoleptic double-stranded mesocate [{Re(CO)₃Cl}₂(L ⁿ)₂] (L ⁿ = L¹, L², L³; 4a-6a) was achieved by the addition of BaCl₂. The direct treatment of Re(CO)₅X (X = Cl, Br) with L¹/L²/L³ yielded the dinuclear homoleptic double-stranded helicates [{Re(CO)₃X}₂ (L ⁿ)₂] (4b-6b and 7-9).

Chromophore-Functionalized Phenanthro-diimine Ligands and Their Re(I) Complexes

A series of diimine ligands has been designed on the basis of 2-pyridyl-1 H-phenanthro[9,10- d]imidazole (L1, L2). Coupling the basic motif of L1 with anthracene-containing fragments affords the bichromophore compounds L3-L5, of which L4 and L5 adopt a donor-acceptor architecture. The latter allows intramolecular charge transfer with intense absorption bands in the visible spectrum (lowest λabs 464 nm (ε = 1.2 × 104 M-1 cm-1) and 490 nm (ε = 5.2 × 104 M-1 cm-1) in CH2Cl2 for L4 and L5, respectively). L1-L5 show strong fluorescence in a fluid medium (Φem = 22-92%, λem 370-602 nm in CH2Cl2); discernible emission solvatochromism is observed for L4 and L5. In addition, the presence of pyridyl (L1-L5) and dimethylaminophenyl (L5) groups enables reversible alteration of their optical properties by means of protonation. Ligands L1-L5 were used to synthesize the corresponding [Re(CO)3X(diimine)] (X = Cl, 1-5; X = CN, 1-CN) complexes. 1 and 2 exhibit unusual dual emission of singlet and triplet parentage, which originate from independently populated 1ππ* and 3MLCT excited states. In contrast to the majority of the reported Re(I) carbonyl luminophores, complexes 3-5 display moderately intense ligand-based fluorescence from an anthracene-containing secondary chromophore and complete quenching of emission from the 3MLCT state presumably due to the triplet-triplet energy transfer (3MLCT → 3ILCT).

Photo-Induced Assembly of a Luminescent Tetraruthenium Square

Self-assembly is a powerful synthetic tool that has led to the development of one-, two- and three-dimensional architectures. From MOFs to molecular flasks, self-assembled materials have proven to be of great interest to the scientific community. Here we describe a strategy for the construction and de-construction of a supramolecular structure through unprecedented photo-induced assembly and dis-assembly. The combination of two approaches, a [n×1]-directional bonding strategy and a ligand photo-dissociation strategy, allows the photo-induced assembly of a polypyridyl Ru^II precursor into a discrete molecular square. Diffusion-ordered NMR spectroscopy confirmed the synthesis of a higher volume species, while the identity of the species was established by high-resolution mass spectrometry and single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The self-assembled square is not obtained by classical thermal techniques in similar conditions, but is obtained only by light-irradiation. The tetraruthenium square has an excited-state lifetime (135 ns), 40 times that of its mononuclear precursor and its luminescence quantum yield (1.0 %) is three orders of magnitude higher. These remarkable luminescence properties are closely related to the relatively rigid square structure of the tetraruthenium assembly, as suggested by slow radiationless decay and transient absorption spectroscopy. The results described herein are a rare example of photo-induced assembly and dis-assembly processes, and can open the way to a new avenue in supramolecular chemistry, leading to the preparation of structurally organized supermolecules by photochemical techniques.
