Generation and characterisation of a stable nickel(ii)-aminoxyl radical complex

Efficient alkane hydroxylation catalysis of nickel(ii) complexes with oxazoline donor containing tripodal tetradentate ligands

Tris(oxazolynylmethyl)amine TOA^R (where R denotes the substituent groups on the fourth position of the oxazoline rings) complexes of nickel(ii) have been synthesized as catalyst precursors for alkane oxidation with meta-chloroperoxybenzoic acid (m-CPBA). The molecular structures of acetato, nitrato, meta-chlorobenzoato and chlorido complexes with TOA^Me2 have been determined using X-ray crystallography. The bulkiness of the substituent groups R affects the coordination environment of the nickel(ii) centers, as has been demonstrated by comparison of the molecular structures of chlorido complexes with TOA^Me2 and TOA^tBu. The nickel(ii)-acetato complex with TOA^Me2 is an efficient catalyst precursor compared with the tris(pyridylmethyl)amine (TPA) analogue. Oxazolynyl donors' strong σ-electron donating ability will enhance the catalytic activity. Catalytic reaction rates and substrate oxidizing position selectivity are controlled by the structural properties of the R of TOA^R. Reaction of the acetato complex with TOA^Me2 and m-CPBA yields the corresponding acylperoxido species, which can be detected using spectroscopy. Kinetic studies of the decay process of the acylperoxido species suggest that the acylperoxido species is a precursor of an active species for alkane oxidation.

Effects of UAV Image Resolution, Camera Type, and Image Overlap on Accuracy of Biomass Predictions in a Tropical Woodland

Unmanned aerial systems (UASs) and photogrammetric structure from motion (SFM) algorithms can assist in biomass assessments in tropical countries and can be a useful tool in local greenhouse gas accounting. This study assessed the influence of image resolution, camera type and side overlap on prediction accuracy of biomass models constructed from ground-based data and UAS data in miombo woodlands in Malawi. We compared prediction accuracy of models reflecting two different image resolutions (10 and 15 cm ground sampling distance) and two camera types (NIR and RGB). The effect of two different side overlap levels (70 and 80%) was also assessed using data from the RGB camera. Multiple linear regression models that related the biomass on 37 field plots to several independent 3-dimensional variables derived from five UAS acquisitions were constructed. Prediction accuracy quantified by leave-one-out cross validation increased when using finer image resolution and RGB camera, while coarser resolution and NIR data decreased model prediction accuracy, although no significant differences were observed in absolute prediction error around the mean between models. The results showed that a reduction of side overlap from 80 to 70%, while keeping a fixed forward overlap of 90%, might be an option for reducing flight time and cost of acquisitions. Furthermore, the analysis of terrain slope effect in biomass predictions showed that error increases with steeper slopes, especially on slopes greater than 35%, but the effects were small in magnitude.

Reversible homolytic activation of water via metal-ligand cooperativity in a T-shaped Ni(ii) complex

A T-shaped Ni(ii) complex [Tol,PhDHPy]Ni has been prepared and characterized. EPR spectra and DFT calculations of this complex suggest that the electronic structure is best described as a high-spin Ni(ii) center antiferromagnetically coupled with a ligand-based radical. This complex reacts with water at room temperature to generate the dimeric complex [Tol,PhDHPy]Ni(μ-OH)Ni[Tol,PhDHPyH] which has been thoroughly characterized by SXRD, NMR, IR and deuterium-labeling experiments. Addition of simple ligands such as phosphines or pyridine displaces water and demonstrates the reversibility of water activation in this system. The water activation step has been examined by kinetic studies and DFT calculations which suggest an unusual homolytic reaction via a bimetallic mechanism. The ΔH ‡, ΔS ‡ and KIE (k H/k D) of the reaction are 5.5 kcal mol-1, -23.8 cal mol-1 K-1, and 2.4(1), respectively. In addition to the reversibility of water addition, this system is capable of activating water towards net O-atom transfer to substrates such as aromatic C-H bonds and phosphines. This reactivity is facilitated by the ability of the dihydrazonopyrrole ligand to accept H-atoms and illustrates the utility of metal ligand cooperation in activating O-H bonds with high bond dissociation energies.

Indirect evidence for a NiIII–oxyl oxidant in the reaction of a NiII complex with peracid

The oxidation of a Ni^II complex with m-CPBA is shown to promote the formation of a transient Ni^III–O˙ species. Methine C–H bond activation in the supporting ligand by this species led to a benzoxazine product.
