Abstract
The synthesis of two chiral bulky alkoxide pro-ligands, 1-adamantyl-tert-butylphenylmethanol HOCAdtBuPh and 1-adamantylmethylphenylmethanol HOCAdMePh, is reported and their coordination chemistry with magnesium(II) is described and compared with the coordination chemistry of the previously reported achiral bulky alkoxide pro-ligand HOCtBu2Ph. Treatment of n-butyl-sec-butylmagnesium with two equivalents of the racemic mixture of HOCAdtBuPh led selectively to the formation of the mononuclear bis(alkoxide) complex Mg(OCAdtBuPh)2(THF)2. 1H NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography suggested the selective formation of the C2-symmetric homochiral diastereomer Mg(OCRAdtBuPh)2(THF)2/Mg(OCSAdtBuPh)2(THF)2. In contrast, the less sterically encumbered HOCAdMePh led to the formation of dinuclear products indicating only partial alkyl group substitution. The mononuclear Mg(OCAdtBuPh)2(THF)2 complex was tested as a catalyst in different reactions for the synthesis of polyesters. In the ROP of lactide, Mg(OCAdtBuPh)2(THF)2 demonstrated very high activity, higher than that shown by Mg(OCtBu2Ph)2(THF)2, although with moderate control degrees. Both Mg(OCAdtBuPh)2(THF)2 and Mg(OCtBu2Ph)2(THF)2 were found to be very effective in the polymerization of macrolactones such as ω-pentadecalactone (PDL) and ω-6-hexadecenlactone (HDL) also under mild reaction conditions that are generally prohibitive for these substrates. The same catalysts demonstrated efficient ring-opening copolymerization (ROCOP) of propylene oxide (PO) and maleic anhydride (MA) to produce poly(propylene maleate).

Abstract
The use of biodegradable materials such as cellulose and polyesters can be extended through the combination, as well as modification, of these biopolymers. By controlling the molecular structure and composition of copolymers of these components, it should also be possible to tailor their material properties. We hereby report on the synthesis and characterization of cellulose-based graft copolymers with a precise molecular composition and copolymer architecture. To prepare such materials, we initially modified cellulose through the regioselective protection of the 6-OH group using trityl chloride. The 6-O protected compound was then alkylated, and deprotection at the 6-OH group provided the desired 2,3-di-O-alkyl cellulose compounds that were used as macroinitiators for ring opening polymerization. Regioselective modification was hereby necessary to obtain compounds with an exact molecular composition. Ring opening polymerization, catalyzed by Sn(Oct)2, at the primary 6-OH group of the cellulose macroinitiator, using L-lactide or ε-caprolactone, resulted in graft copolymers with the desired functionalization pattern. The materials were characterized using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, 1H- and 13C- nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, size exclusion chromatography as well as X-ray diffraction, and differential scanning calorimetry. PCL-based copolymers exhibited distinct melting point as well as a crystalline phase of up to 47%, while copolymers with PLA segments were highly amorphous, showing a broad amorphous reflex in the XRD spectra, and no melting or crystallization points were discernible using differential scanning calorimetry.

Abstract
New homoleptic zinc and magnesium complexes containing constrained reduced Schiff base ligands based on substituted 7-hydroxy-1-indanone were successfully synthesized and used as a catalyst for the polymerization of lactide. The ligands contain a side arm having different basicity because dimethylamino, pyridyl, and furfuryl groups are shown to greatly affect the polymerization rates. The homoleptic zinc complex containing constrained reduced Schiff base ligands and a dimethylamino side arm was highly active, giving a 92% conversion of l-lactide in 3 min using [LA]:[Zn]:[BnOH] = 500:1:2 at room temperature. The polymerization is pseudo-first-order dependent on the LA concentration. Well-controlled and living behavior of the zinc complex was observed and demonstrated in the preparation of stereodiblock and triblock copolymers of l-, d-, and rac-lactide in a one-pot sequential synthesis with a predictable block length, block sequence, and narrow dispersity rapidly in 10 min. Stereocomplex formation was observed for PLA made sequentially from 100 l-LA, 100 rac-LA, and 100 d-LA having a high Tm of up to 220 °C.

Abstract
The zinc complexes 1 and 2 bearing chelating phosphorous based pincer ligands were found to catalyze the ring-opening copolymerization of L-lactide and ε-caprolactone in the melt at 110 °C to obtain a series of random copolymers in which the monomer distributions were coherent with the monomer ratio in the feed. All the obtained copolymers showed high molecular masses with monomodal and moderately narrow distributions. The thermal properties of the achieved copolymers (Tg, glass transition temperature, and Tm, melting temperature) were strongly dependent on their composition. A linear dependence of Tg with molar percentage of lactide in the copolymers was observed over a temperature range from -59 °C (pure polycaprolactone) to 55 °C (pure polylactide).

Abstract
Synthesis of a new mononuclear magnesium complex with a bulky bis(alkoxide) ligand environment and its reactivity in ring-opening polymerization (ROP) and ring-opening copolymerization (ROCOP) are reported. Reaction of n-butyl-sec-butylmagnesium with two equivalents of HOR (HOR = di-tert-butylphenylmethanol, HOCtBu2Ph) formed Mg(OR)2(THF)2. The reaction proceeded via the Mg(OR)(sec-Bu)(THF)2 intermediate that was independently synthesized by treating n-butyl-sec-butylmagnesium with one equivalent of HOR. Mg(OR)2(THF)2 led to active albeit not well-controlled ROP of rac-lactide. In contrast, well-controlled ROCOP of epoxides with cyclic anhydrides was observed, including efficient and alternating copolymerization of phthalic anhydride with cyclohexene oxide as well as rare copolymerization of phthalic anhydride with limonene oxide and terpolymerization of phthalic anhydride with both cyclohexene oxide and limonene oxide. In addition, novel copolymerization of dihydrocoumarin with limonene oxide is described.

Abstract
Reactive extrusion and magnesium (II) N-heterocyclic carbene catalyst are successfully employed in continuous polylactide synthesis. The possibility of using six-membered N-heterocyclic carbene adducts to act as efficient catalysts towards the sustainable synthesis of poly(l-lactide) through ring-opening polymerization of l-lactide (LA) is first investigated in bulk batch reactions. Under optimized solvent-free conditions, polylactide (PLA) of moderate to high molecular weights and excellent optical activities are successfully achieved. These promising results are further applied in the continuous production of PLA in an extruder.

Abstract
Three-coordinated Zn(ii) complexes bearing sterically encumbered bidentate monoanionic [N,N -] pyridylamido ligands efficiently catalyze the ring opening polymerization of lactide (LA) and ε-caprolactone (CL). Owing to the polymerization controlled nature and high rate, precise stereodiblock poly(LLA-b-DLA) with different block lengths can be easily produced by one-pot sequential monomer addition at room temperature in short reaction times. NMR, SEC and DSC analyses confirm the production of highly isotactic diblock copolymers which crystallize in the high melting stereocomplex phase. Stereo-triblock and tetrablock copolymers of l-LA, d-LA and rac-LA have been synthesized similarly. Finally, a diblock poly(CL-b-LA) has been easily obtained by sequential addition of ε-caprolactone and lactide under mild conditions.
