Photocatalytic removal of toxic dyes, liquorice and tetracycline wastewaters by a mesoporous photocatalyst under irradiation of different lamps and sunlight

Simple recyclable K₅CoW₁₂O₄₀/TiO₂ was synthesized and used to remove methyl orange, rhodamine B, direct red 16 and crystal violet toxic organic dyes, liquorice industrial wastewater and tetracycline (TC) as an antibiotic. Photoactivity of the catalyst was checked out under irradiation of various lamps (such as 18 W fluorescent, 300 W Xenon, LED and IR lamps). The best efficiency was obtained by fluorescent lamp at catalyst loading of 3 g/L, initial pH of 5, initial dye concentration of 5 ppm, complete degradation was achieved after 30 min contact time. Mechanistic investigation showed that·O₂ radicals and h⁺ are majorly responsible for photodegradation in this process. Electrochemical investigation, Nyquist, Bode, Mott-Schottky, Tauc plots and photoluminescence proved that using this photocatalyst delay the electron-hole recombination, increase the lifetime of excited electron, extend light absorption to visible region and improve the light absorption capacity. This photocatalyst work well under winter sunlight. Also 97% and 84% dye removal was obtained for liquorice with 300 and 1000 COD at optimal condition. This catalyst showed similar activity for TC wastewater. Photocatalyst was characterized by FE-SEM, EDX, AFM, FT-IR, XRD, PL, DRS, EIS, BJH and BET.

Semiconducting Polymers for Oxygen Evolution Reaction under Light Illumination

Sunlight-driven water splitting to produce hydrogen fuel has stimulated intensive scientific interest, as this technology has the potential to revolutionize fossil fuel-based energy systems in modern society. The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) determines the performance of overall water splitting owing to its sluggish kinetics with multielectron transfer processing. Polymeric photocatalysts have recently been developed for the OER, and substantial progress has been realized in this emerging research field. In this Review, the focus is on the photocatalytic technologies and materials of polymeric photocatalysts for the OER. Two practical systems, namely, particle suspension systems and film-based photoelectrochemical systems, form two main sections. The concept is reviewed in terms of thermodynamics and kinetics, and polymeric photocatalysts are discussed based on three key characteristics, namely, light absorption, charge separation and transfer, and surface oxidation reactions. A satisfactory OER performance by polymeric photocatalysts will eventually offer a platform to achieve overall water splitting and other advanced applications in a cost-effective, sustainable, and renewable manner using solar energy.

A uniformly decorated and photostable polydopamine-organic semiconductor to boost the photoelectrochemical water splitting performance of CdS photoanodes

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting to produce renewable H2 fuel by storage of solar energy has attracted increasing attention as it could reduce carbon footprint and solve the global consumption growth. Herein, a photostable polymer polydopamine (PDA) was introduced to enhance the PEC performance by forming a uniform inorganic-organic hybrid heterostructure with CdS. The organic semiconductor PDA not only forms a strong coordinate bond to facilitate the transfer of electrons, but also acts as a passivation layer, contributing to improve the stability of the photoelectrode. A photocurrent density of 1.08 mA cm-2 was achieved for CdS/1PDA, which was about 2.4 times that of bare CdS at 0.28 V vs. RHE, and CdS/1PDA featured a reasonable photocurrent stability compared with bare CdS. The Co-Pi co-catalyst, as a hole acceptor, further prohibited charge recombination and promoted the water oxidation kinetics. The photocurrent density of CdS/1PDA/5Co-Pi was up to 2.68 mA cm-2 (0.28 V vs. RHE), which was 5.7 and 2.5 times higher than that of bare CdS and CdS/1PD, respectively. The strategy provides a beneficial insight to design an inorganic-organic uniform heterostructure for the enhancement in PEC performance.
