Well designed iridium-phosphinite complexes: Biological assays, electrochemical behavior and density functional theory calculations

Mononuclear phosphinite Iridium complexes based on ferrocene group have been prepared and characterized by various spectroscopic techniques. The complexes were subjected to cyclic voltammetry studies in order to determine the energies of HOMO and LUMO levels and to estimate their electrochemical and some electronic properties. Organic complex-based memory substrates were immobilized using TiO2-modified ITO electrodes, and the memory functions of phosphinite-based organic complexes were verified by chronoamperometry (CA) and open-circuit potential amperometry (OCPA). Extensive theoretical and experimental investigations were directed to gain a more profound understanding of the chemical descriptors and the diverse electronic transitions taking place within the iridium complexes, as well as their electrochemical characteristics. The quantum chemical calculations were carried out for the iridium complexes at the DFT/CAM-B3LYP level of theory in the gas phase. Furthermore, the antioxidant, antimicrobial, DNA binding, and DNA cleavage activities of the complexes were tested. Complex 2 exhibited the highest radical scavenging activity (67.5 ± 2.24 %) at 200.0 mg/L concentration. It was observed that the complexes formed an inhibition zone in the range of 8-15 mm against Gram + bacteria and in the range of 0-13 mm against Gram - bacteria. The agarose gel electrophoresis method was used to determine the DNA binding and DNA cleavage activities of the complexes. All of the tested complexes had DNA binding activity; however, complexes 1, 2, and 8 showed better binding activity than the others.

Engineered organotin(IV) and vanadium(V) derivatives with distinct coordination modes and luminescent properties for the efficient detection and quantification of permanganate ions

The distinction in coordination modes of metal complexes leads to their versatile structural features and unique properties. Here, we report two tetradentate Schiff base ligands (H₂L¹ and H₂L²) bearing N₂O₂ donor sets, tactically selected to provide distinct coordination modes with different metal ions. The ligands were utilized to synthesize their organotin(IV) (1-4) and vanadium(V) (5) derivatives. The synthesized compounds were characterized using elemental analysis, FT-IR spectroscopy, multi-nuclei NMR (¹H, ¹³C, and ¹¹⁹Sn) spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The organotin(IV) derivatives (1-4) displayed hepta-coordination around both the Sn centres as they were achieved in their dimeric form. Contrariwise, the vanadium(V) compound (5) was isolated as a mononuclear entity exhibiting penta-coordinated geometry around the vanadium centre. The variation in the coordination modes was evident in their UV-vis and fluorescence spectra. The organotin(IV) compounds (1-4) exhibited a strong emission band centred at 468 nm when excited at a wavelength of 360 nm whereas the vanadium(V) (5) derivative displayed poor fluorogenic response. Compound 1 was further explored for the fluorogenic chemo-sensing of permanganate ions (MnO₄^-) amongst various anions by quenching response. A detailed investigation of the recognition of permanganate ions was accomplished by spectrofluorometric, spectroscopic (¹¹⁹Sn NMR), mass spectrometric, and computational studies.

Single Molecule Magnets of Co2 and Co2La MOFs Synthesized by New Schiff Base Ligand N,N'-bis(o-Vanillinidene) Ethylenediamine (o-VEDH2)

Schiff base ligand N,N'-bis(o-vanillinidene) ethylenediamine (o-VEDH2) has been employed to synthesize new [CoIICoIV(o-VED)(OAc)2(μ2-OAc)(OMe)]•MeOH (1) and [Co 2 IV (o-VED)2(en)2(NCCH3)(OCH3)][La(NO3)6](NO 3 - )•2MeOH•MeCN•H2O (2) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) that have interesting single molecule magnets (SMMs) property. The synthesized complexes are characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), UV-visible spectroscopy, and squid magnetic measurement. Single crystal X-ray data show that both complexes crystallize in the monoclinic crystal system with P21/c(14) and P21/n(14) space groups and generate unique MOF-like structures. Overall, both the metal centers of 1 form octahedral geometry with a butterfly core structure. Variable temperature (T) and field (H) solid-state direct-current (dc) and alternative current (ac) magnetic susceptibility measurements were performed on both the complexes over 1.8 to 300 K, which exhibited a ground state spins (S) of 4 and 5 of complexes 1 and 2, respectively. The AC out-phase and in-phase properties of complexes show SMMs. Other properties such as optical, sensing, and DNA-binding interactions were also investigated by the complexes. Complexes 1 and 2 have energy band gaps of 3.7 and 3.03 eV indicating semiconductor properties. Simultaneously, complex 1 was found to sense H2O2 with a rate constant (k) = 1.59 × 10-4 s-1, whereas complex 2 was found to bind with calf-thymus-DNA by intercalation mode with binding constant (K b ) of 1.22 × 105 M-1.

Structure and synthesis of copper-based Schiff base and reduced Schiff base complexes: a combined experimental and theoretical investigation of biomimetic catalytic activity

Three copper(ii) complexes, [Cu(L1)(NCS)]n (1), [Cu(L1)(N3)]n (2) and [Cu(L2)(N3)] (3) were synthesized from one Schiff base ligand and one reduced Schiff base ligand, (E)-4-chloro-2-[(2-propylaminoethylimino)methyl]phenol (HL1) and 4-chloro-2-[(2-(propylaminoethylamino) methyl]phenol (HL2), respectively. All complexes were characterized by various physicochemical studies, such as FT-IR, UV-Vis, ESI-MS, EPR and single crystal X-ray diffraction. Complexes 1 and 2 have 1D polymeric chain-like structures bridging through thiocyanate and azide anions, whereas complex 3 has a mononuclear structure in the solid state. All the complexes are active towards mimicking two well-known proteins, phosphatase and phenoxazinone synthase, using the disodium salt of 4-nitrophenylphosphate (4-NPP) and 2-aminophenol (OAP) as the substrate in DMF medium. Complexes 2 and 3 show the highest activity towards phosphatase and phenoxazinone synthase activity with kcat values of 22.6 s-1 and 134.4 h-1, respectively. EPR studies confirmed that for complex 1, the OAP oxidation goes through the generation of an organic radical at g = 1.99, which is due to an imine radical formation, whereas the metal center redox pathway is followed for complex 3. Extensive DFT calculations have been performed for both catalytic studies to put forward the most probable mechanistic pathways.
