Ag2(0) dimers within a thioether-functionalized MOF catalyze the CO2 to CH4 hydrogenation reaction

Ultrasmall silver clusters in reduced state are difficult to synthesize since silver atoms tend to rapidly aggregate into bigger entities. Here, we show that dimers of reduced silver (Ag₂) are formed within the framework of a metal-organic framework provided with thioether arms in their walls (methioMOF), after reduction with NaBH₄ of the corresponding Ag⁺-methioMOF precursor. The resulting Ag₂-methioMOF catalyzes the methanation reaction of carbon dioxide (CO₂ to CH₄ hydrogenation reaction) under mild reaction conditions (1 atm CO₂, 4 atm H₂, 140 °C), with production rates much higher than Ag on alumina and even comparable to the state-of-the-art Ru on alumina catalyst (Ru-Al₂O₃) under these reaction conditions, according to literature results.

Structures and Stabilities of Carbon Chain Clusters Influenced by Atomic Antimony

The C-C bond lengths of the linear magnetic neutral C_nSb, C_nSb⁺ cations and C_nSb^- anions are within 1.255-1.336 Å, which is typical for cumulene structures with moderately strong double-bonds. In this report, we found that the adiabatic ionization energy (IE) of C_nSb decreased with n. When comparing the IE~n relationship of C_nSb with that of pure C_n, we found that the latter exhibited a stair-step pattern (n ≥ 6), but the IE~n relationship of C_nSb chains took the shape of a flat curve. The IEs of C_nSb were lower than those of corresponding pure carbon chains. Different from pure carbon chains, the adiabatic electron affinity of C_nSb does not exhibit a parity effect. There is an even-odd alternation for the incremental binding energies of the open chain C_nSb (for n = 1-16) and C_nSb⁺ (n = 1-10, when n > 10, the incremental binding energies of odd (n) chain of C_nSb⁺ are larger than adjacent clusters). The difference in the incremental binding energies between the even and odd chains of both C_nSb and pure C_n diminishes with the increase in n. The incremental binding energies for C_nSb^- anions do not exhibit a parity effect. For carbon chain clusters, the most favorable binding site of atomic antimony is the terminal carbon of the carbon cluster because the terminal carbon with a large spin density bonds in an unsaturated way. The C-Sb bond is a double bond with Wiberg bond index (WBI) between 1.41 and 2.13, which is obviously stronger for a carbon chain cluster with odd-number carbon atoms. The WBI of all C-C bonds was determined to be between 1.63 and 2.01, indicating the cumulene character of the carbon chain. Generally, the alteration of WBI and, in particular, the carbon chain cluster is consistent with the bond length alteration. However, the shorter C-C distance did not indicate a larger WBI. Rather than relying on the empirical comparison of bond distance, the WBI is a meaningful quantitative indicator for predicting the bonding strength in the carbon chain.

Atom-economical synthesis of 1,2-bis(phosphine oxide)ethanes from calcium carbide with straightforward access to deuterium- and 13C-labeled bidentate phosphorus ligands and metal complexes

Straightforward access to bidentate phosphorus ligands and bis(phosphineoxide)ethanes is described based on atom-economic addition reaction. A practical approach was developed to incorporate 2H and 13C labels using easily available reagents.

Visualization of catalyst dynamics and development of a practical procedure to study complex "cocktail"-type catalytic systems

The ability to distinguish molecular catalysis from nanoscale catalysis provides a key to success in the field of catalyst development, particularly for the transition to sustainable economies. Complex evolution of catalyst precursors, facilitated by dynamic interconversions and leaching, makes the identification of catalytically active forms an important task, which is sometimes very difficult. We propose a simple method for in situ capturing of nanoparticles with carbon-coated grids directly from reaction mixtures. Application of this method to the Mizoroki-Heck reaction allowed visualization of dynamic changes of the dominant form of palladium particles in the reaction mixtures with homogeneous and heterogeneous catalyst precursors. Changes in the size and shape of the palladium particles reflecting the progress of the catalytic chemical reaction were demonstrated. Detailed computational modeling was carried out to confirm the generality of this approach and its feasibility for different catalytic systems. The computational models revealed strong binding of metal particles to the carbon coating comprising efficient binding sites. The approach was tested for trapping Cr, Co, Ag, Ni, Cu, Pd, Cd, Ir, Ru and Rh nanoparticles from solutions containing micromolar starting concentrations of the metal precursors. The developed approach provides a unique tool for studying intrinsic properties of catalytic systems.

Evidence for “cocktail”-type catalysis in Buchwald–Hartwig reaction. A mechanistic study

The mechanism of the C–N cross-coupling reaction, catalyzed by Pd/NHC, was evaluated at the molecular and nanoscale levels. The first evidence for the involvement of a “cocktail”-type system in the Buchwald–Hartwig reaction is provided.

The comparative experimental study of Ar–X (X = Cl, Br, I) reactivity and analysis reported herein suggest that oxidative addition cannot be considered the sole reason of the observed low reactivity of aryl chlorides.
