Abstract
The mechanism and the reactive species involved in the oxidation of alkenes, and alcohols with H2O2, catalysed by an in situ prepared mixture of a MnII salt, pyridine-2-carboxylic acid and a ketone is elucidated using substrate competition experiments, kinetic isotope effect (KIE) measurements, and atom tracking with 18O labelling. The data indicate that a single reactive species engages in the oxidation of both alkenes and alcohols. The primary KIE in the oxidation of benzyl alcohols is ca. 3.5 and shows the reactive species to be selective despite a zero order dependence on substrate concentration, and the high turnover frequencies (up to 30 s-1) observed. Selective 18O labelling identifies the origin of the oxygen atoms transferred to the substrate during oxidation, and is consistent with a highly reactive, e. g., [MnV(O)(OH)] or [MnV(O)2], species rather than an alkylperoxy or hydroperoxy species.

Abstract
Cytochrome P450s and Galactose Oxidases exploit redox active ligands to form reactive high valent intermediates for oxidation reactions. This strategy works well for the late 3d metals where accessing high valent states is rather challenging. Herein, we report the oxidation of NiII (salen) (salen=N,N'-bis(3,5-di-tert-butyl-salicylidene)-1,2-cyclohexane-(1R,2R)-diamine) with mCPBA (meta-chloroperoxybenzoic acid) to form a fleeting NiIII bisphenoxyl diradical species, in CH3 CN and CH2 Cl2 at -40 °C. Electrochemical and spectroscopic analyses using UV/Vis, EPR, and resonance Raman spectroscopies revealed oxidation events both on the ligand and the metal centre to yield a NiIII bisphenoxyl diradical species. DFT calculations found the electronic structure of the ligand and the d-configuration of the metal center to be consistent with a NiIII bisphenoxyl diradical species. This three electron oxidized species can perform hydrogen atom abstraction and oxygen atom transfer reactions.

Abstract
Improving the sustainability of synthesis is a major goal in green chemistry, which has been greatly aided by the development of asymmetric transition metal catalysis. Recent advances in asymmetric catalysis show that the ability to control the coordination sphere of substrates can lead to improvements in enantioselectivity and activity, in a manner resembling the operation of enzymes. Peptides can be used to mimic enzyme structures and their secondary interactions and they are easily accessible through solid-phase peptide synthesis. Despite this, cyclic peptides remain underexplored as chiral ligands for catalysis due to synthetic complications upon macrocyclization. Here, we show that the solid-phase synthesis of peptides containing metal-binding amino acids, bipyridylalanine (1), phenyl pyridylalanine (2) and N,N-dimethylhistidine (3) can be combined with peptide macrocylization using peptide cyclase 1 (PCY1) to yield cyclic peptides under mild conditions. High conversions of the linear peptides were observed (approx. 90%) and the Cu-bound cyclo(FSAS(1)SSKP) was shown to be a competent catalyst in the Friedel-Crafts/conjugate addition of indole. This study shows that PCY1 can tolerate peptides containing amino acids with classic inorganic and organometallic ligands as side chains, opening the door to the streamlined and efficient development of cyclic peptides as metal ligands.

Abstract
Natural biomolecules have been used extensively as chiral scaffolds that bind/surround metal complexes to achieve stereoselectivity in catalytic reactions. ATP is ubiquitously found in nature as an energy-storing molecule and can complex diverse metal cations. However, in biotic reactions ATP-metal complexes are thought to function mostly as co-substrates undergoing phosphoanhydride bond cleavage reactions rather than participating in catalytic mechanisms. Here, we report that a specific Cu(II)-ATP complex (Cu2+·ATP) efficiently catalyses Diels-Alder reactions with high reactivity and enantioselectivity. We investigate the substrates and stereoselectivity of the reaction, characterise the catalyst by a range of physicochemical experiments and propose the reaction mechanism based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations. It is found that three key residues (N7, β-phosphate and γ-phosphate) in ATP are important for the efficient catalytic activity and stereocontrol via complexation of the Cu(II) ion. In addition to the potential technological uses, these findings could have general implications for the chemical selection of complex mixtures in prebiotic scenarios.

Abstract
In soluble methane monooxygenase enzymes (sMMO), dioxygen (O2) is activated at a diiron(II) center to form an oxodiiron(IV) intermediate Q that performs the challenging oxidation of methane to methanol. An analogous mechanism of O2 activation at mono- or dinuclear iron centers is rare in the synthetic chemistry. Herein, we report a mononuclear non-heme iron(II)-cyclam complex, 1-trans, that activates O2 to form the corresponding iron(IV)-oxo complex, 2-trans, via a mechanism reminiscent of the O2 activation process in sMMO. The conversion of 1-trans to 2-trans proceeds via the intermediate formation of an iron(III)-superoxide species 3, which could be trapped and spectroscopically characterized at -50 °C. Surprisingly, 3 is a stronger oxygen atom transfer (OAT) agent than 2-trans; 3 performs OAT to 1-trans or PPh3 to yield 2-trans quantitatively. Furthermore, 2-trans oxidizes the aromatic C-H bonds of 2,6-di-tert-butylphenol, which, together with the strong OAT ability of 3, represents new domains of oxoiron(IV) and superoxoiron(III) reactivities.

Abstract
Self-assembly enables formation of incredibly diverse supramolecular structures with practically important functions from simple and inexpensive building blocks. Here, we show how a semirational, bottom-up approach to create emerging properties can be extended to a design of highly enantioselective catalytic nanoassemblies. The designed peptides comprising as few as two amino acid residues spontaneously self-assemble in the presence of metal ions to form supramolecular, vesicle-like nanoassemblies that promote transfer hydrogenation of ketones in an aqueous phase with excellent conversion rates and enantioselectivities (>90% ee).

Abstract
The generation of a nonheme oxoiron(IV) intermediate, [(cyclam)FeIV (O)(CH3 CN)]2+ (2; cyclam=1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane), is reported in the reactions of [(cyclam)FeII ]2+ with aqueous hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2 ) or a soluble iodosylbenzene (sPhIO) as a rare example of an oxoiron(IV) species that shows a preference for epoxidation over allylic oxidation in the oxidation of cyclohexene. Complex 2 is kinetically and catalytically competent to perform the epoxidation of olefins with high stereo- and regioselectivity. More importantly, 2 is likely to be the reactive intermediate involved in the catalytic epoxidation of olefins by [(cyclam)FeII ]2+ and H2 O2 . In spite of the predominance of the oxoiron(IV) cores in biology, the present study is a rare example of high-yield isolation and spectroscopic characterization of a catalytically relevant oxoiron(IV) intermediate in chemical oxidation reactions.
