Microwave-assisted routes for rapid and efficient modification of layered perovskites

Implementation of Highly Stable Memristive Characteristics in an Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Resistive Switching Layer of Chitosan-Titanium Oxide with Microwave-Assisted Oxidation

This study proposes a high-performance organic-inorganic hybrid memristor for the development of neuromorphic devices in the memristor-based artificial synapse. The memristor consists of a solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) chitosan layer and a titanium oxide (TiO_x) layer grown with a low-thermal-budget, microwave-assisted oxidation. The fabricated Ti/SPE-chitosan/TiO_x/Pt-structured memristor exhibited steady bipolar resistive switching (BRS) characteristics and demonstrated excellent endurance in 100-cycle repetition tests. Compared to SPE-chitosan memristors without a TiO_x layer, the proposed organic-inorganic hybrid memristor demonstrated a higher dynamic range and a higher response to pre-synaptic stimuli such as short-term plasticity via paired-pulse facilitation. The effect of adding the TiO_x layer on the BRS properties was examined, and the results showed that the TiO_x layer improved the chemical and electrical superiority of the proposed memristor synaptic device. The proposed SPE-chitosan organic-inorganic hybrid memristor also exhibited a stable spike-timing-dependent plasticity, which closely mimics long-term plasticity. The potentiation and depression behaviors that modulate synaptic weights operated stably via repeated spike cycle tests. Therefore, the proposed SPE-chitosan organic-inorganic hybrid memristor is a promising candidate for the development of neuromorphic devices in memristor-based artificial synapses owing to its excellent stability, high dynamic range, and superior response to pre-synaptic stimuli.

Enhanced Synaptic Properties in Biocompatible Casein Electrolyte via Microwave-Assisted Efficient Solution Synthesis

In this study, we fabricated an electric double-layer transistor (EDLT), a synaptic device, by preparing a casein biopolymer electrolyte solution using an efficient microwave-assisted synthesis to replace the conventional heating (heat stirrer) synthesis. Microwave irradiation (MWI) is more efficient in transferring energy to materials than heat stirrer, which significantly reduces the preparation time for casein electrolytes. The capacitance-frequency characteristics of metal-insulator-metal configurations applying the casein electrolyte prepared through MWI or a heat stirrer were measured. The capacitance of the MWI synthetic casein was 3.58 μF/cm² at 1 Hz, which was higher than that of the heat stirrer (1.78 μF/cm²), confirming a stronger EDL gating effect. Electrolyte-gated EDLTs using two different casein electrolytes as gate-insulating films were fabricated. The MWI synthetic casein exhibited superior EDLT electrical characteristics compared to the heat stirrer. Meanwhile, essential synaptic functions, including excitatory post-synaptic current, paired-pulse facilitation, signal filtering, and potentiation/depression, were successfully demonstrated in both EDLTs. However, MWI synthetic casein electrolyte-gated EDLT showed higher synaptic facilitation than the heat stirrer. Furthermore, we performed an MNIST handwritten-digit-recognition task using a multilayer artificial neural network and MWI synthetic casein EDLT achieved a higher recognition rate of 91.24%. The results suggest that microwave-assisted casein solution synthesis is an effective method for realizing biocompatible neuromorphic systems.

Platinum@Hexaniobate Nanopeapods: A Directed Photocatalytic Architecture for Dye-Sensitized Semiconductor H2 Production under Visible Light Irradiation

Platinum@hexaniobate nanopeapods (Pt@HNB NPPs) are a nanocomposite photocatalyst that was selectively engineered to increase the efficiency of hydrogen production from visible light photolysis. Pt@HNB NPPs consist of linear arrays of high surface area Pt nanocubes encapsulated within scrolled sheets of the semiconductor H _x K_4-x Nb₆O₁₇ and were synthesized in high yield via a facile one-pot microwave heating method that is fast, reproducible, and more easily scalable than multi-step approaches required by many other state-of-the-art catalysts. The Pt@HNB NPPs' unique 3D architecture enables physical separation of the Pt catalysts from competing surface reactions, promoting electron efficient delivery to the isolated reduction environment along directed charge transport pathways that kinetically prohibit recombination reactions. Pt@HNB NPPs' catalytic activity was assessed in direct comparison to representative state-of-the-art Pt/semiconductor nanocomposites (extPt-HNB NScs) and unsupported Pt nanocubes. Photolysis under similar conditions exhibited superior H₂ production by the Pt@HNB NPPs, which exceeded other catalyst H₂ yields (μmol) by a factor of 10. Turnover number and apparent quantum yield values showed similar dramatic increases over the other catalysts. Overall, the results clearly demonstrate that Pt@HNB NPPs represent a unique, intricate nanoarchitecture among state-of-the-art heterogeneous catalysts, offering obvious benefits as a new architectural pathway toward efficient, versatile, and scalable hydrogen energy production. Potential factors behind the Pt@HNB NPPs' superior performance are discussed below, as are the impacts of systematic variation of photolysis parameters and the use of a non-aqueous reductive quenching photosystem.

Photocatalytic Activity of n-Alkylamine and n-Alkoxy Derivatives of Layered Perovskite-like Titanates H2Ln2Ti3O10 (Ln = La, Nd) in the Reaction of Hydrogen Production from an Aqueous Solution of Methanol

Two series of hybrid inorganic-organic derivatives, obtained via the modification of protonated Ruddlesden–Popper phases H2Ln2Ti3O10 (Ln = La, Nd) with intercalated n-alkylamines and grafted n-alkoxy groups, have been systematically investigated in relation to photocatalytic hydrogen production from a model of 1 mol % aqueous solution of methanol for the first time. Photocatalytic measurements were performed both for bare samples and for their composites with Pt nanoparticles as a cocatalyst using an advanced scheme, including dark stages, monitoring of the volume concentration of the sample in the reaction suspension during the experiment, shifts of its pH and possible exfoliation of layered compounds into nanolayers. It was found that the incorporation of organic components into the interlayer space of the titanates increases their photocatalytic activity up to 117 times compared with that of the initial compounds. Additional platinization of the hybrid samples’ surface allowed for achieving apparent quantum efficiency of hydrogen evolution of more than 40%. It was established that the photocatalytic activity of the hybrid samples correlates with the hydration degree of their interlayer space, which is considered a separate reaction zone in photocatalysis, and that hydrogen indeed generates from the aqueous methanol solution rather than from organic components of the derivatives.

Fast and efficient shear-force assisted production of covalently functionalized oxide nanosheets

HYPOTHESIS

While controlled and efficient exfoliation of layered oxides often remains a time consuming challenge, the surface modification of inorganic nanosheets is of outmost importance for future applications. The functionalization of the bulk material prior to exfoliation should allow the application of tools developped for Van der Waals materials to directly produce functionalized oxide nanosheets.

EXPERIMENTS

The Aurivillius phase Bi₂SrTa₂O₉ is functionalized by a linear aliphatic phosphonic acid via microwave-assisted reactions. The structure of the hybrid material and the coordination of the phosphonate group is scrutinized, notably by Pair Distribution Function. This functionalized layered oxide is then exfoliated in one hour in organic solvent, using high shear force dispersion. The obtained nanosheets are characterized in suspension and as deposits to check their chemical integrity.

FINDINGS

The covalent functionalization decreases the electrostatic cohesion between the inorganic layers leading to an efficient exfoliation in short time under shearing. The functionalization of the bulk material is preserved on the nanosheets upon exfoliation and plays a major role to enable liquid-phase exfoliation and in the stability of the resulting suspensions. This strategy is very promising for the straighforward preparation of functionalized nanosheets, paving the way for versatile design of new (multi)functional hybrid nanosheets for various potential applications.

NMR Study of Intercalates and Grafted Organic Derivatives of H2La2Ti3O10

The protonated perovskite-like titanate H2La2Ti3O10 has been used to produce organic-inorganic hybrids with simple organic molecules: methylamine, methanol, monoethanolamine, and n-butylamine. The optimal pathways for the preparation of such hybrids are summarized. Solid-state NMR, combined with thermal analysis, Raman, and IR spectroscopy, has been applied to determine the bonding type in the obtained organic-inorganic hybrids. It has been found that, in the methanolic hybrid, the organic residues are covalently bound to the inorganic matrix. In contrast, in the methylamine and n-butylamine hybrids, the organic molecules are intercalated into the inorganic matrix in cationic forms. The structure of the monoethanolamine hybrid is composite and includes both the covalently bound and intercalated organic species.

Layered Titanate H2Nd2Ti3O10 Intercalated With n-Butylamine: A New Highly Efficient Hybrid Photocatalyst for Hydrogen Production From Aqueous Solutions of Alcohols

A layered perovskite-type oxide intercalated with n-butylamine is reported as an efficient photocatalyst for hydrogen production from aqueous solutions of alcohols for the first time. The hybrid photocatalyst H₂Nd₂Ti₃O₁₀×BuNH₂ was synthesized by solid-state ceramic method followed by protonation, intercalation of methylamine and subsequent substitution by n-butylamine. The product was characterized by powder XRD, TGA, STA-MS, DRS, IR, and Raman spectroscopy, CHN analysis, SEM. Intercalation of n-butylamine caused a dramatic increase in photocatalytic activity of H₂Nd₂Ti₃O₁₀ in the reaction of hydrogen evolution from aqueous solutions of methanol, ethanol, and n-butanol under UV radiation. While the non-intercalated Pt-loaded H₂Nd₂Ti₃O₁₀ showed a maximum quantum efficiency of only 2% in the 220-340 nm range, the efficiency for hybrid samples reached 23% under the same conditions and after variation of experimental parameters even 52% efficiency was achieved. This effect may be associated with the significant expansion of the interlayer space, which is considered as a separate reaction zone.

Microwave-assisted functionalization of the Aurivillius phase Bi2SrTa2O9: diol grafting and amine insertion vs. alcohol grafting

The microwave-assisted functionalization of an Aurivillius phase is investigated towards various molecules – alcohols, diols and amino-alcohols – and the preferential reactivity of the various moieties is studied as a function of the reaction conditions.

Microwave-assisted functionalization of the layered Aurivillius phase Bi₂SrTa₂O₉ by alcohols is thoroughly investigated. The grafting of linear aliphatic and bulky alcohols is studied as a function of the starting material, underlining the importance of the prefunctionalization of the layered perovskite, for instance by butylamine. In addition, the functionalization by α,ω-alkanediols is explored. α,ω-alkanediols bearing long alkyl chains (n_C > 3) adopt an unprecedented pillaring arrangement, whereas 1,3-propanediol and ethyleneglycol adopt a bilayer arrangement, only one out of the two hydroxyl groups being coordinated. Finally, the reactivities of alcohols and amines towards insertion are compared: the preferential reactivity of the two functional groups appears to be strongly dependent of the reaction conditions, and especially of the water content. This study is further extended to the case of amino-alcohol insertion. In this case, the amine group is preferentially bound, but it is possible to control the grafting of the alcohol moiety, thus going from a bilayer arrangement to a pillaring one. This work is of particular importance to be able to functionalize easily and rapidly layered oxides with elaborated molecules, bearing several different potentially reactive groups.
