Advances of Ionic Liquids and Deep Eutectic Solvents in Green Processes of Biomass-Derived 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural

5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is identified as an important bio-based platform chemical to bridge petroleum-based and biomass-based resources. It can be obtained through dehydration of various carbohydrates as well as converted to value-added fuels and chemicals. As designer solvents, ionic liquids (ILs) and deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have been widely used in catalytic transformation of biomass derivatives to various chemicals. This Review summarizes recent progress in experimental and theoretical studies on dehydration of carbohydrates such as fructose, glucose, sucrose, cellobiose, chitosan, cellulose, inulin, and even raw biomass to generate HMF using ILs and DESs as catalysts/cocatalysts and/or solvents/cosolvents. It also gives an overview of IL and DES-involved catalytic transformation of HMF to downstream products via oxidation, reduction, esterification, decarboxylation, and so forth. Challenges and prospects of ILs and DESs are also proposed for further production of HMF and HMF derivatives from biomass in green and sustainable processes.

Stabilization effect of [Bmim]Cl on HMF is demonstrated, which can suppress the rehydration and polymerization side-reactions and enhance HMF yield.

Butenolide Derivatives of Biobased Furans: Sustainable Synthetic Dyes

The dye and pigment manufacturing industry is one of the most polluting in the world. Each year, over one million tons of petrochemical colorants are produced globally, the synthesis of which generates a large amount of waste. Naturally occurring, plant-based dyes, on the other hand, are resource intensive to produce (land, water, energy), and are generally less effective as colorants. Between these two extremes would be synthetic dyes that are fully sourced from biomass-derived intermediates. The present work describes the synthesis of such compounds, containing strong chromophores that lead to bright colors in the yellow to red region of the visible spectrum. The study was originally motivated by an early report of an unidentified halomethylfurfural derivative which resulted from hydrolysis in the presence of barium carbonate, now characterized as a butenolide of 5-(hydroxymethyl)furfural (HMF). The method has been generalized for the synthesis of dyes from other biobased platform molecules, and a mechanism is proposed.

Metal-Catalyzed Degradation of Cellulose in Ionic Liquid Media

Biomass conversion to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) has been widely investigated as a sustainable alternative to petroleum-based feedstock, since it can be efficiently converted to fuel, plastic, polyester, and other industrial chemicals. In this report, the degradation of commercial cellulose, the isomerization of glucose to fructose, and the conversion of glucose to HMF in 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([BMIM]Cl]) using metal catalysts (CrCl3, ZnCl2, MgCl2) as well as tungsten and molybdenum oxide-based polyoxometalates (POM) were investigated. Tungsten and molybdenum oxide-based POMs in ionic liquids (IL) were able to degrade cellulose to majority glucose and epimerize glucose to mannose (in the case of the molybdenum oxide-based POM). A certain amount of glucose was also converted to HMF. The tungsten oxide-based POM in IL showed good activity for cellulose degradation but the overall products yield remained 28.6% lower than those obtained using CrCl3 as a catalyst. Lowering the cellulose loading did not significantly influence the results and the addition of water to the reaction medium decreased the product yields remarkably.

An ionic liquid–organic solvent biphasic system for efficient production of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural from carbohydrates at high concentrations

A biphasic system consisting of EMIMBr/SnCl₄ and organic solvent was developed to produce HMF from carbohydrates at high concentrations.
