Exploring Si-centered phthalocyanine as a single atom catalyst for N2O reduction: a DFT study

To remove the greenhouse gas N2O from the environment, recently, researchers have taken great interest in single-atom catalysts (SACs). In this study, we investigated various reaction pathways and barrier energies for the N2O reduction process onto Si-coordinated phthalocyanine (Si@PthC) employing density functional theory. The outcomes validate that Si decoration in PthC is energetically stable while the corresponding electronic properties show that the Si atom acts as the reactive site for catalytic activity. The N2O molecule exhibits spontaneous dissociation over the catalyst surface from the O-end with -4.01 eV dissociation energy. Meanwhile, N2O dissociation via the N-end involves chemisorption onto the Si@PthC surface with an adsorption energy (Ead) of -1.16 eV, and the dissociation needs an energy barrier of 0.51 eV. The bond distances and negative adsorption energies (-1.11 and -2.40 eV) evince that CO and O2 species chemisorbed onto the Si@PthC surface. However, these energies are smaller than the N2O dissociation energy, which demonstrates that the presence of CO and O2 molecules cannot interrupt the N2O reduction process. Additionally, the CO + O* → CO2 reaction was executed for catalyst recovery, and the reaction proceeds very quickly on the Si@PthC catalyst, with a very small energy barrier (0.37 eV), indicating the excellent catalytic reactivity of the studied catalyst. These results propose that the designed catalyst can be valuable in the progress of novel noble metal-free catalysts for the elimination of harmful N2O from the environment.

Oxidation of methane and ethylene over Al incorporated N-doped graphene: A comparative mechanistic DFT study

It is generally recognized that developing effective methods for selective oxidation of hydrocarbons to generate more useful chemicals is a major challenge for the chemical industry. In the present study, density functional theory calculations are conducted to examine the catalytic partial oxidation of methane (CH₄) and ethylene (C₂H₄) by nitrous oxide (N₂O) over Al-incorporated porphyrin-like N-doped graphene (AlN₄-Gr). Adsorption energies for the most stable configurations of CH₄, C₂H₄, and N₂O molecules over the AlN₄-Gr catalyst are determined to be -0.25, -0.64, and -0.40 eV, respectively. According to our findings, N₂O can be efficiently split into N₂ and O_ads species with a negligible activation energy on the AlN₄-Gr surface. Meanwhile, CH₄ and C₂H₄ molecules compete for reaction with the activated oxygen atom (O_ads) that stays on the surface. The energy barriers for partial methane oxidation through the CH₄ + O_ads → CH₃° + HO_ads and CH₃° + HO_ads → CH₃OH reaction steps are 0.16 eV and 0.27 eV, respectively. Furthermore, the produced CH₃OH may be overoxidized by O_ads to give formaldehyde and water molecules by overcoming a relatively low activation barrier. The activation barriers for C₂H₄ epoxidation are small and comparable to those for CH₄ oxidation, implying that AlN₄-Gr is highly active for both reactions. The high energy barrier for the 1,2-hydrogen shift in the OCH₂CH₂ intermediate, on the other hand, makes the production of acetaldehyde impossible under normal conditions. According to the population analysis, the AlN₄-Gr serves as a strong electron donor to aid in the charge transfer between the Al atom and the O_ads moiety, which is necessary for the activation of CH₄ and C₂H₄. The findings of the present study may pave the way for a better understanding of the catalytic oxidation the CH₄ and C₂H₄, as well as for the development of highly efficient noble-metal free catalysts for these reactions.

Recent Progress in Graphene-Based Noble-Metal Nanocomposites for Electrocatalytic Applications

The fast industrialization process has led to global challenges in the energy crisis and environmental pollution, which might be solved with clean and renewable energy. Highly efficient electrochemical systems for clean-energy collection require high-performance electrocatalysts, including Au, Pt, Pd, Ru, etc. Graphene, a single-layer 2D carbon nanosheet, possesses many intriguing properties, and has attracted tremendous research attention. Specifically, graphene and graphene derivatives have been utilized as templates for the synthesis of various noble-metal nanocomposites, showing excellent performance in electrocatalytic-energy-conversion applications, such as the hydrogen evolution reaction and CO₂ reduction. Herein, the recent progress in graphene-based noble-metal nanocomposites is summarized, focusing on their synthetic methods and electrocatalytic applications. Furthermore, some personal insights on the challenges and possible future work in this research field are proposed.
