Abstract
The effect of the terminal benzyloxy group on the mesomorphic properties of liquid crystalline materials developed from rod-like Schiff base has been described. For this objective, a novel Schiff base liquid crystal family, specifically new series of Schiff base liquid crystals, namely, (E)-4-(alkyloxy)-N-(4-(benzyloxy)benzylidene)aniline, In, are prepared and investigated in detail. The length of the terminal alkyloxy chain (n) varies amongst the compounds in the series. Where n varies between 6, 8 and 16 carbons. At the other end of the compounds, benzyloxy moiety was attached. The molecular structures of all synthesized compounds were established using different spectroscopic techniques. The molecular self-assembly was explored using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscope (POM). Depending on the length of the terminal alkyloxy chain, only one type of SmA phase with different stability was observed. The previously reported para-substituted systems and the present investigated compounds were compared and discussed. The calculated quantum chemical parameters were computationally correlated using the DFT method via the B3LYP 6-311G(d,p) basis set. The theoretical computations revealed that the length of the alkyl side chain influences the zero-point energy, reactivity and other estimated thermodynamic parameters of benzoyloxy/azomethine derivatives. Furthermore, the FMO energy analysis shows that molecule I16 have higher HOMO energies than the other compounds, and I6 has a much lower LUMO level than the rest.

Abstract
Liquid crystals are considered to be the fourth state of matter with an intermediate order and fluidity in comparison to solids and liquids. Calixarenes are among one of the most versatile families of building blocks for supramolecular chemistry due to their unique vaselike structure that can be chemically engineered to have different shapes and sizes. During the last few decades, calixarenes have drawn much attention in the field of supramolecular chemistry due to their diverse applications in the fields of ion and molecular recognition, ion-selective electrodes for catalysis, drug delivery, gelation, organic electronics and sensors, etc. Imbuing liquid crystallinity to the calixarene framework leads to functionalized calixarene derivatives with fluidity and order. Columnar self-assembly of such derivatives in particular enhance the charge migration along the column due to the 1D stacking due to the enhanced π-π overlap. Considering limited reports and reviews on this new class of calixarene based liquid crystals, a comprehensive account of the synthesis of calixarene liquid crystals along with their mesomorphic behavior and potential applications are presented in this review.

Abstract
The first examples of deep-red/near-infrared (NIR) photoluminescent, (n,π-conjugated) discotics, namely, C 3h -tris(keto-hydrazone)s, which are the tautomers of tris(azo-enol)s, have been synthesized via a facile one-step triple azo-coupling and characterized. The n,π-resonance-assisted intramolecular H-bonding, rendering planarity and shape persistence to the central core, facilitates their self-assembly into either a hexagonal columnar (Colh) phase (p6mm lattice) or a columnar rectangular (Colr) phase (p2mm lattice), over an extended thermal range including room temperature, fluorescing in the deep-red/NIR-I region. The low band gap with deep-red/NIR emission makes them ideal candidates for NIR-organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) and bioimaging.

Abstract
The role of electron acceptor/donor group substitution on the photophysical properties of tris(salicylideneanilines) (TSANs) was investigated. These compounds were synthesised and characterised through spectroscopic techniques including steady state absorption and emission spectroscopies. Their photochemical reaction mechanisms and properties were explored with the aid of ab initio methods of quantum chemistry. The obtained results allow us to verify the dependence of multiple emission bands on the substitution of electron donating and accepting groups to the tris(salicylideneaniline) core. The results also stress the differences in phosphorescence behaviour of TSANs for which this type of emission has not been reported so far.

Abstract
Discotic (disk-shaped) molecules or molecular aggregates may form, within a certain temperature range, partially ordered phases, known as discotic liquid crystals, which have been extensively studied in the recent past. On the one hand, this interest was prompted by the fact that they represent models for testing energy and charge transport theories in organic materials. However, their long-range self-assembling properties, potential low cost, ease of processability with a variety of solvents and the relative ease of tailoring their properties via chemical synthesis, drove the attention of researchers also towards the exploitation of their semiconducting properties in organic electronic devices. This review covers recent research on the charge transport properties of discotic mesophases, starting with an introduction to their phase structure, followed by an overview of the models used to describe charge mobility in organic substances in general and in these systems in particular, and by the description of the techniques most commonly used to measure their charge mobility. The reader already familiar or not interested in such details can easily skip these sections and refer to the core section of this work, focusing on the most recent and significant results regarding charge mobility in discotic liquid crystals.

Abstract
Strategies for the synthesis of star-shaped molecules have been in high demand in the last decades due to the importance of those compounds in various fields. The distinctly different properties of these compounds compared to their linear analogues make them versatile building blocks for the formation of mesophases of interesting mesomorphic and photophysical properties. Moreover, the applications of star-shaped molecules as building units for dendrimers as well as in supramolecular host-guest chemistry have also been recently studied. The star-shaped molecules mentioned in this review are classified according to the central core as well as the type of side arms. The properties and applications of these compounds are described in the appropriate contexts. This report summarizes the recent advances in this area.

Abstract
Herein, we describe the synthesis of novel light-emitting liquid-crystalline (LC) compounds bearing pentafluorinated bistolane-based luminophores with a V- or a Y-shaped molecular geometry and the evaluation of their LC and photophysical characteristics. The V- or Y-shaped compounds exhibited a unique LC phase and showed photoluminescence (PL) behavior under various circumstances, such as in dilute solution or in the solid state. Notably, PL characteristics were observed even under high-temperature conditions with a crystal (Cr) to LC phase transition, although the PL efficiency (Φ PL) was gradually reduced because of thermal molecular motion. Interestingly, Φ PL was found to be completely recovered through the LC → Cr phase transition during the cooling process; the PL characteristics of the V- or Y-shaped compounds were sensitively changed by external thermal stress, giving these compounds the ability to act as thermoresponsive PL sensing materials.

Abstract
Rational understanding of the structural features involving different noncovalent interactions is necessary to design a liquid crystal (LC) or an organogelator. Herein, we report the effect of the number and positions of alkoxy chains on the self-assembly induced physical properties of a few π-conjugated molecules. For this purpose, we designed and synthesized three C 3-symmetrical molecules based on oligo(p-phenylenevinylene), C 3 OPV1-3. The self-assembly properties of these molecules are studied in the solid and solution states. All of the three molecules follow the isodesmic self-assembly pathway. Upon cooling from isotropic melt, C 3 OPV1 having nine alkoxy chains (-OC12H25) formed a columnar phase with two-dimensional rectangular lattice and retained the LC phase even at room temperature. Interestingly, when one of the -OC12H25 groups from each of the end benzene rings is knocked out, the resultant molecule, C 3 OPV2 lost the LC property, however, transformed as a gelator in toluene and n-decane. Surprisingly, when the -OC12H25 group from the middle position is removed, the resultant molecule C 3 OPV3 failed to form either the LC or the gel phases.
