Internal Vibrations of Pyridinium Cation in One-Dimensional Halide Perovskites and the Corresponding Halide Salts

We investigate vibrations of the pyridinium cation PyH+ = C5H5NH+ in one-dimensional lead halide perovskites PyPbX3 and pyridinium halide salts PyHX (X- = I-, Br-), combining infrared absorption and Raman scattering methods at room temperature. Internal vibrations of the cation were assigned based on density functional theory modeling. Some of the vibrational bands are sensitive to perovskite or the salt environment in the solid state, while halide substitution has only a minor effect on them. These findings have been confirmed by 1H, 13C and 207Pb solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments. Narrower vibrational bands in perovskites indicate less disorder in these materials. The splitting of NH-group vibrational bands in perovskites can be rationalized the presence of nonequivalent crystal sites for cations or by more exotic phenomena such as quantum tunneling transition between two molecular orientations. We have shown how organic cations in hybrid organic-inorganic crystals could be used as spectators of the crystalline environment that affects their internal vibrations.

Syntheses, structures, photoelectric properties and photocatalysis of iodobismuthate hybrids with lanthanide complex cations

New iodobismuthate hybrids with lanthanide complex counter cations, [Ln(DMF)₈][Bi₂I₉] (Ln = La (1), Eu (2)) and [Tb(DMF)₈]₂[Bi₂I₉]₂ (3) (DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide), were prepared using solvated Ln(III) complexes formed in situ as structure-directing agents. The dimeric [Bi₂I₉]^3- anion moieties of compounds 1-3 are aggregated by two slightly twisted BiI₆ octahedra through face-sharing mode. The different crystal structures of 1-3 are due to the different I⋯I and C-H⋯I hydrogen bond interactions. Compounds 1-3 have narrow semiconducting band gaps at 2.23, 1.91 and 1.94 eV, respectively. Under Xe light irradiation, they exhibit steady photocurrent densities that are 1.81, 2.10 and 2.18 times higher than that of pure BiI₃, respectively. Compounds 2 and 3 exhibited higher catalytic activities than 1 in the photodegradation of organic dyes CV and RhB, which are attributed to the stronger photocurrent response derived from the redox cycles of Eu³⁺/Eu²⁺ and Tb⁴⁺/Tb³⁺.

Dielectric phase transition of an A2BX4-type perovskite with a pentahedral to octahedral transformation

Organic-inorganic hybrid compounds that undergo reversible dielectric phase transitions are a very attractive class of smart materials due to their wide applications in data storage, data communication and signal sensing. Here, a piperidine ring, C₅H₁₁N, was introduced into the inorganic lead halide perovskite scaffold to obtain three hybrid perovskite compounds, [C₅H₁₂N]₂PbCl₄ (1), [C₅H₁₂N]₂PbBr₄ (2), and [C₅H₁₂N]PbI₃ (3). When compound 2 and compound 3 feature static two-dimensional (2D) and one-dimensional (1D) perovskite structures, respectively, it is striking that compound 1 shows a reversible pentahedral to octahedral transformation. It undergoes an above-room-temperature dielectric phase transition at T_c≅ 352 K, wherein the high dielectric constant is more than twice the low dielectric constant. Structural analysis shows that 1 undergoes a phase transition from the space group Pnma at the low temperature phase (LTP) to C2/c at the high temperature phase (HTP). The phase transition originates from the order-disorder conversion of piperidinium cations. It is interesting to note that, the Pb²⁺ cations in the inorganic moieties change from five-coordinate at the LTP to six-coordinate at the HTP. The discovery of dielectric phase transition hybrid organic-inorganic lead halide perovskite materials further enhances the potential applications of high temperature responsive dielectric switchable materials.
