Supramolecular Solid Complexes between Bis-pyridinium-4-oxime and Distinctive Cyanoiron Platforms

The structural features and optical properties of supramolecular cyanoiron salts containing bis-pyridinium-4-oxime Toxogonin® (TOXO) as an electron acceptor are presented. The properties of the new TOXO-based cyanoiron materials were probed by employing two cyanoiron platforms: hexacyanoferrate(II), [Fe(CN)6]4- (HCF); and nitroprusside, [Fe(CN)5(NO)]2- (NP). Two water-insoluble inter-ionic donor-acceptor phases were characterized: the as-prepared microcrystalline reddish-brown (TOXO)2[Fe(CN)6]·8H2O (1a) with a medium-responsive, hydrochromic character; and the dark violet crystalline (TOXO)2[Fe(CN)6]·3.5H2O (1cr). Complex 1a, upon external stimulation, transforms to the violet anhydrous phase (TOXO)2[Fe(CN)6] (1b), which upon water uptake transforms back to 1a. Using the NP platform resulted in the water-insoluble crystalline salt TOXO[Fe(CN)5(NO)]·2H2O (2). The structures of 1cr and 2, solved by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, along with a comparative spectroscopic (UV-vis-NIR diffuse reflectance, IR, solid-state MAS-NMR, Mössbauer), thermal, powder X-ray diffraction, and microscopic analysis (SEM, TEM) of the isolated materials, provided insight for the supramolecular binding, electron-accepting, and H-bonding capabilities of TOXO in the self-assembly of these functionalized materials.

Nitroprusside and metal nitroprusside nano analogues for cancer therapy

Sodium nitroprusside (SNP), U.S approved drug has been used in clinical emergency as a hypertensive drug for more than a decade. It is well established for its various biomedical applications such as angiogenesis, wound healing, neurological disorders including anti-microbial applications etc. Apart from that, SNP have been considered as excellent biomedical materials for its use as anti-cancer agent because of its behavior as NO-donor. Recent reports suggest that incorporation of metals in SNP/encapsulation of SNP in metal nanoparticles (metal nitroprusside analogues) shows better therapeutic anti-cancer activity. Although there are numerous reports available regarding the biological applications of SNP and metal-based SNP analogue nanoparticles, unfortunately there is not a single comprehensive review which highlights the anti-cancer activity of SNP and its derivative metal analogues in detail along with the future perspective. To this end, the present review article focuses the recent development of anti-cancer activity of SNP and metal-based SNP analogues, their plausible mechanism of action, current status. Furthermore, the future perspectives and challenges of these biomedical materials are also discussed. Overall, this review article represents a new perspective in the area of cancer nanomedicine that will attract a wider spectrum of scientific community.

Surface Reconstruction Facilitated by Fluorine Migration and Bimetallic Center in NiCo Bimetallic Fluoride Toward Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a critical anodic reaction of electrochemical water splitting, developing a high-efficiency electrocatalyst is essential. Transition metal-based catalysts are much more cost-effective if comparable activities can be achieved. Among them, fluorides are rarely reported due to their low aqueous stability of coordination and low electric conductivity. Herein, a NiCo bimetallic fluoride with good crystallinity is designed and constructed, and significantly enhanced catalytic activity and conductivity are observed. The inevitable oxidation of transition metal ions at high potential and the dissociation of F- are attributed to the low aqueous stability of coordination. The theoretical researches predicte that transition metal fluorides should have a strong tendency to electrochemical reconstruction. Therefore, based on the observations on their electrochemical behavior, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and bode plots, it is further demonstrated that surface reconstruction occurred during the electrochemical process, meanwhile a significant increase of electrochemically active area, which is created by F migration, are also directly observed. Additionally, DFT calculation results show that the electronic structure of the catalysts is modulated by the bimetallic centers, and this reconstruction helps optimizing the adsorption energy of oxygen-containing species and improves OER activity.

One-Step Electrodeposition of a Mesoporous Ni/Co-Imidazole-Based Bimetal-Organic Framework on Pyramid-like NiSb with Abundant Coupling Interfaces as an Ultra-Stable Heterostructural Electrocatalyst for Water Splitting

The exploration of highly efficient metal-organic framework (MOF)-based electrocatalysts is a research topic of high significance owing to their potential applications in sustainable and clean energy production. Herein, a mesoporous MOF containing Ni and Co nodes along with 2-methylimidazole (Hmim) ligands has been directly grown on the surface of the pyramid-like NiSb through a convenient cathodic electrodeposition strategy and evaluated as the catalyst for water splitting catalysis. Tailoring catalytically active sites through porous well-arranging architecture and the coupled interface offers a catalyst with exquisite performance that displays ultra-low Tafel constant of 33 and 42 mV dec^-1 toward the hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction, sequentially, and also enhanced durability at high current densities over 150 h in a 1 M KOH medium. The success of the synthesized NiCo-MOF@NiSb@GB electrode is explained by the intimate contact between the NiCo-MOF and NiSb with well-tailored phase interfaces, the positive coupling effect between Ni and Co metal centers in the MOF, and the porous structure with abundant active sites toward electrocatalysis. Importantly, the present work provides a new technical reference for the electrochemical synthesis of heterostructural MOFs as a promising candidate for energy-related applications.

Synthesis of graphene oxide nanosheets decorated by nanoporous zeolite-imidazole (ZIF-67) based metal-organic framework with controlled-release corrosion inhibitor performance: Experimental and detailed DFT-D theoretical explorations

For the first time, the zeolite-imidazole (ZIF-67) framework, a new subfamily of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), is synthesized on the graphene oxide (GO) platform. Co²⁺ (as a central atom) and 2-methylimidazole (as organic ligands) were assembled to fabricate ZIF-67/GO NPs for providing epoxy-based anti-corrosion coatings with both active (self-healing) and passive (barrier) performance. Also, the ZIF-67/GO NPs were modified by 3-Aminopropyl triethoxysilane (APS) to improve the particles compatibility with the epoxy matrix and control their solubility in saline media. The FE-SEM, FT-IR, UV-Vis, Raman, TGA, and low-angle XRD techniques were used to prove the successful ZIF-67 particles growth onto the GO platforms. Tafel (potentiodynamic) polarization test demonstrated that the ZIF-67/GO@APS NPs could protect the surface of steel through mixed anodic/cathodic type (O₂ reduction/Fe oxidation) mechanisms and the corrosion current density of the iron sample decreased to 1.41 µA·cm^-2. Interestingly, the epoxy coatings containing ZIF-67/GO and ZIF-67/GO@APS particles revealed long-term corrosion protection durability and outstanding self-healing anti-corrosion performance, which were well studied via EIS, salt spray, cathodic delamination, and pull-off techniques. The impedance value at the lowest frequency for the coating containing ZIF-67/GO@APS after 50 days decreased from 10.7 Ω·cm² to 10.2 Ω·cm² that showed the lowest reduction among the studied samples.
