Abstract
Diazo compounds are known to be good coupling partners in the synthesis of heterocycles, carbocycles and functionalized molecules via a rhodium carbene-based strategy. Many heterocyclic and carbocyclic compounds, including isoquinolones and isocoumarins, quinoxalines, indoles, pyrrones, benzothazines, enaminones, benzenes and seven-membered rings, can be constructed using this rhodium-catalyzed system. The reaction mechanism involves C-H activation, carbene insertion and an annulation/functionalization sequence. This review describes the progress made in the last five years in rhodium-catalyzed transformations of diazo compounds as easily accessible precursors in organic chemistry.

Abstract
A Ru(II)-catalyzed decarbonylative alkylation and annulation of salicylaldehydes and 2-aminobenzaldehydes with iodonium ylides has been developed for the synthesis of dibenzo[b,d]furans and NH-free carbazolones. The reaction proceeds smoothly under mild conditions with a low catalyst loading and a broad substrate compatibility. Notably, hydroxy and free amino groups were demonstrated to be the effective directing groups, enabling the successful aldehyde C-H bond activation and subsequent decarbonylation and annulation under the inexpensive Ru(II) catalyst.

Abstract
A Rh(III)-catalyzed cascade nucleophilic addition/intramolecular annulation of 2-diazo-1,3-diketones with 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds (e.g., 1,3-diketones and β-keto esters) is achieved to afford 6,7-dihydrobenzofuran-4(5H)-ones in up to 91% yields. Notably, a wide range of substrates and functional groups were well-tolerated under the optimized reaction conditions to give desired products in moderate to excellent yields with release of N2 and H2O as byproducts. Moreover, the method described is scalable and adaptable to late-stage functionalization.

Abstract
An important strategy for the efficient generation of diversity in molecular structures is the utilization of common starting materials in chemodivergent transformations. The most studied solutions for switching the chemoselectivity rely on the catalyst, ligand, additive, solvent, temperature, time, pressure, pH and even small modifications in the substrate. In this review article several processes have been selected such as inter- and intramolecular cyclizations, including carba-, oxa-, thia- and oxazacyclizations promoted mainly by Brønsted or Lewis acids, transition metals and organocatalysts, as well as radical reactions. Catalyst-controlled intra- and intermolecular cyclizations are mainly described to give five- and six-membered rings. Cycloaddition reactions involving (2+2), (3+2), (3+3), (4+1), (4+2), (5+2), (6+2) and (7+2) processes are useful reactions for the synthesis of cyclic systems using organocatalysts, metal catalysts and Lewis acid-controlled processes. Addition reactions mainly of carba- and heteronucleophiles to unsaturated conjugated substrates can give different adducts via metal catalyst-, Lewis acid- and solvent-dependent processes. Carbonylation reactions of amines and phenols are carried out via ligand-controlled transition metal-catalyzed multicomponent processes. Ring-opening reactions starting mainly from cyclopropanols, cyclopropenols and epoxides or aziridines are applied to the synthesis of acyclic versus cyclic products under catalyst-control mainly by Lewis acids. Chemodivergent reduction reactions are performed using dissolving metals, sodium borohydride or hydrogen transfer conditions under solvent control. Oxidation reactions include molecular oxygen under solvent control or using different dioxiranes, as well as chemodivergent palladium catalyzed cross-coupling reactions using boronic acids are applied to aromatic and allenic compounds. Other chemodivergent reactions such as alkylations and allylations under transition metal catalysis, dimerization of acetylenes, bromination of benzylic substrates, and A3-couplings are performed via catalyst- or reaction condition-dependent processes.

Abstract
A novel and mild Rh(iii)-catalyzed C-H activation/intramolecular condensation of 1-aryl-1H-pyrazol-5-amines with cyclic 2-diazo-1,3-diketones was developed, giving access to various important benzo[f]pyrazolo[1,5-a][1,3]diazepine scaffolds through sequential C-C/C-N bond formation in a one-pot procedure under additive- and oxidant-free conditions. Furthermore, 3-([1,1'-biphenyl]-2-ylamino)-2-ethoxycyclohex-2-enones can be obtained in good yields by constructing C-O and C-N bonds through 1,1'-insertion, dehydration, and isomerization processes.

Abstract
On exposure to a combination of Cu[I]- and Pd[0]-based catalysts, compounds such as 1 and 7 engage in tandem Ullmann-Goldberg cross-coupling and cyclopalladation-reductive elimination reactions to give benzofurans such as 8. Related reactions involving hetero-Michael additions of o-halogenated phenols or anilines to propiolates and the Pd[0]-catalyzed cyclization of the resulting conjugates provide, in a one-pot process, alternately functionalized benzofurans, indoles, or phthalanes.

Abstract
Advances in the transition-metal-free cyclobutanol ring expansion to 4-tetralones under N-bromosuccinimide mediation are described. We have expanded the scope of this ring expansion methodology and investigated the effect substituents on the aromatic ring, and the cyclobutanol moiety, have on the outcome of the reaction. Limitations with certain substituents on the cyclobutanol moiety are also described. Further experimental evidence to support our mechanistic understanding is disclosed, and we now preclude the suggested involvement of a primary radical for this transformation.

Abstract
Herein, we report a one-pot protocol for the synthesis of dispiroacetals 4 bearing a cyclobutane motif via tandem Achmatowicz rearrangement and acetalization of 1-[5-(hydroxyalkyl)-furan-2-yl]-cyclobutanols 3 with m-CPBA as the oxidant and AgSbF6 as an additive to promote the cyclization step in an aqueous medium. Dispiroacetals 4 could subsequently undergo Lewis acid-catalyzed ring expansion and skeletal rearrangement to afford 6,7-dihydro-5 H-benzofuran-4-ones 5.
