A captivating approach to elevate the detection of Al3+ ions incorporates the utilization of a tripodal receptor intricately embellishing the surface of zinc oxide

The FDA (Food and Drug Administration, (USA)) lists ZnO as a material that is widely acknowledged to be safe. ZnO NPs with a range of tiny particle sizes were made using the precipitation process. ZnO nanoparticles' surface is embellished with a tripodal sensor containing naphthol units. The assembly with the same receptor decorated on ZnO NPs is contrasted with the cation detection capabilities of the purified tripodal receptor. The UV-visible spectrophotometric analysis was conducted to study the state transitions of the receptor and the decorated ZnO receptor. A positive selectivity to Al3+ cations is determined by the fluorescence study under ideal circumstances. The particle size and surface morphologies are determined by DLS and SEM analysis for the same receptor - TP1 and embellished with a tripodal receptor TP2. Using a fluorescence switch-on Photoinduced Electron Transfer (PET) mechanism, the receptor coated on ZnO detects the presence of Al3+ ions with specificity. The binding constant value was determined using the B-H plot equation. Binding stoichiometry for [TP1-Al3+, TP2-Al3+] showed a 1:1 ratio. The fluorescence switches ON-OFF process of the ZnO surface adorned - TP2 with Tripodal receptor- TP1 was used to create molecular logic gates, which can function as a module for sensors and molecular switches. The addition of Na2EDTA in the solution of the [TP1; TP2 - Al3+] complex resulted in a noticeable reduction in the emission of fluorescence. This finding offers compelling support for the reversibility of the chemosensor. To enable the practical application of this sensor, we have developed a cassette containing receptors TP1 and TP2. Successfully, it can detect Al3+ metal ions. We performed a comprehensive assessment of the dependability and appropriateness of our approach in measuring the concentration of Al3+ ions in wastewater produced by important industrial procedures.

Isatin-Schiff base functionalized graphene oxide as a highly selective turn-on fluorescent probe for the detection of Pd(II) via photoinduced electron transfer pathway

We investigated the use of isatin-Schiff base functionalized graphene oxide (ISBGO) as a selective fluorescent chemosensor for the detection of palladium ions. Selectivity tests indicated that over 23 metal ions tested, ISBGO (λex = 340 nm, λem = 504 nm) showed the highest affinity for Pd(II), displaying a 10.1-fold enhancement. Also, interference tests proved that in the presence of both Pd(II) and other metal ions, there was still high fluorescence intensity and no considerable quenching occurred. According to DFT and TD-DFT calculations, photo-induced electron transfer (PET) is responsible for the turn-on response produced by the chemosensor. Coordination of Pd(II) with ISBGO in fact blocks PET from imine nitrogen of 3-iminoindolin-2-one moiety to the benzene ring, which in turn leads to a turn-on response. In addition, Job's plot analysis and Benesi-Hildebrand approach suggest that ISBGO preferably forms a 1:1 complex with Pd(II) with an association constant of 1.020 × 105 M-1. Moreover, FT-IR spectroscopy and DFT study showed that amide oxygen and imine nitrogen of 3-iminoindolin-2-one moiety acted as binding sites of ISBGO. High sensitivity, fast response, great degree of sensitivity, short life time, low detection limit of 32 nM combined with high association constant (Kf) of 1.020 × 105 M-1 and increased fluorescence quantum yield (Φf) of roughly 1.5-fold in the presence of Pd (II), highlight the role of ISBGO as an excellent probe for sensing Pd(II) in aqueous solution.

Differential Metal Ion Sensing by an Antipyrine Derivative in Aqueous and β-Cyclodextrin Media: Selectivity Tuning by β-Cyclodextrin

β-Cyclodextrin (β-CD) is a nontoxic cyclic oligosachcharide that can encapsulate all or part of organic molecules of appropriate size and specific shape through noncovalent interaction. Herein, we report the influence of β-CD complex formation of an antipyrine derivative on its metal ion sensing behavior. In aqueous solution, the antipyrine shows a turn-on fluorescence sensing of vanadyl ion, and in cyclodextrin medium it senses aluminum ion. The compound shows an unusual fluorescence quenching on binding with β-cyclodextrin (log K_SV = 2.34 ± 0.02). The differential metal ion sensing is due to the partial blocking of the chelating moiety by the cyclodextrin molecule. The structure of the antipyrine-cyclodextrin complex is optimized by two-dimensional rotating-frame Overhauser effect spectroscopy. The binding constant is determined by isothermal titration calorimetry (log K = 2.09 ± 0.004). The metal ion binding site is optimized by quanutm mechanical calculations. The lower limit of detection of vanadyl and aluminum ions, respectively, are 5 × 10^-8 and 5 × 10^-7 mol dm^-3. This is the first report of selectivity of two different cations by a chemosensor in water and in β-CD.

On/Off Fluorescent Chemosensor for Selective Detection of Divalent Iron and Copper Ions: Molecular Logic Operation and Protein Binding

Here, naphthalene diamine-based β-diketone derivative (compound LH) was successfully used as a dual signaling probe for divalent cations, Fe2+ and Cu2+ ions, in bimodal methods (colorimetric and fluorometric). It showed fluorescent enhancement for Fe2+ ion by photoinduced electron transfer mechanism and fluorescence quenching for Cu2+ ion by charge-transfer process. Binding stoichiometry for [LH-(Fe2+)2] and [LH-(Cu2+)2] was found to be 1:2 by Job's plot method and, the binding constants were calculated as 1.6638 × 1010 and 9.22929 × 108 M-1, respectively. Compound LH exhibited OR and XOR logic gate behavior with H+, Fe2+, and Cu2+ as inputs. Further, the compound LH and bovine serum albumin binding interaction showed quenching of fluorescence by Förster resonance energy-transfer mechanism.
