A series of intrinsically chiral gold nanocage structures

Making copper, silver and gold fullerene cages breathe

We show that optical properties change when the fullerene structures of Au₃₂, Cu₃₂and Ag₃₂inflate and deflate. We first observe significant differences in the extinction spectra employing a classical approach based on the Green's dyadic method. By means of real-time time-dependent density functional theory. We continue to calculate the optical spectrum (OP) via aδ-kick simulation, comparing results with the ground-state energetic property the HOMO-LUMO (HL) gap. Red-shift of the OP is expected as the fullerenes inflate, with only ±10% change in the size. As the fullerene breathes, a 0.8 eV shift in the first peak position could be observed in the gold nanoparticle. Ag has a smoother behaviour than both Au and Cu. We have also found changes in the optical spectra can not be directly interpreted as a result of changes in the HL gap.

Chiral carbon dots: synthesis, optical properties, and emerging applications

Carbon dots are luminescent carbonaceous nanoparticles that can be endowed with chiral properties, making them particularly interesting for biomedical applications due to their low cytotoxicity and facile synthesis. In recent years, synthetic efforts leading to chiral carbon dots with other attractive optical properties such as two-photon absorption and circularly polarized light emission have flourished. We start this review by introducing examples of molecular chirality and its origins and providing a summary of chiroptical spectroscopy used for its characterization. Then approaches used to induce chirality in nanomaterials are reviewed. In the main part of this review we focus on chiral carbon dots, introducing their fabrication techniques such as bottom-up and top-down chemical syntheses, their morphology, and optical/chiroptical properties. We then consider emerging applications of chiral carbon dots in sensing, bioimaging, and catalysis, and conclude this review with a summary and future challenges.

Visual chiral recognition of D/L-leucine using cube-shaped gold nanoparticles as colorimetric probes

Chiral recognition of enantiomers is fundamentally important. In this work, an effective and simple chiral sensing strategy for discrimination of leucine (Leu) enantiomers was constructed. In this chiral sensing, cube-shaped gold nanoparticles (AuNCs) as colorimetric probes are used to recognize Leu enantiomers. L-Leu can induce rapidly the aggregation of AuNCs, leading to change of AuNCs solution from red to colorless, while D-Leu cannot induce the color change. This distinct color changes allow naked-eye to distinguish chiral isomers of Leu. The chiral sensing was applied to measure the enantiometric excess of L-Leu in the whole range (from -100% to 100%). This chiral analysis can be performed by naked eye or simple ultraviolet-visible spectrometer. In addition, the mechanism of chiral recognition has been studied with circular dichroism (CD) spectra, UV-vis absorption spectra and zeta potential. In this method, the chiral recognition is due to the intrinsic chirality of AuNCs, and the AuNCs don't need any chiral labeling or modification. This chiral sensing method is simple, cheap, rapid and easy to operate. Furthermore, this work provides one experimental evidence for intrinsic chirality of nanoparticles, and helps people understand the chirality of nanostructures.

Structural properties of sub-nanometer metallic clusters

At the nanoscale, the investigation of structural features becomes fundamental as we can establish relationships between cluster geometries and their physicochemical properties. The peculiarity lies in the variety of shapes often unusual and far from any geometrical and crystallographic intuition clusters can assume. In this respect, we should treat and consider nanoparticles as a new form of matter. Nanoparticle structures depend on their size, chemical composition, ordering, as well as external conditions e.g. synthesis method, pressure, temperature, support. On top of that, at finite temperatures nanoparticles can fluctuate among different structures, opening new and exciting horizons for the design of optimal nanoparticles for advanced applications. This article aims to overview geometrical features of transition metal clusters and of their various rearrangements.

Au26: a case of fluxionality/co-existence

BOMD simulations are performed on experimentally identified conformations of the fluxional Au26 cluster at finite temperature. Comprehensive analysis of structural, electronic and thermal properties indicates that the highest energy tubular cage conformation (till 500 K) outperforms the ground state conformation (till 400 K) in terms of thermal stability.
