Noble Metal Nanoparticle-Based Photothermal Therapy: Development and Application in Effective Cancer Therapy

Photothermal therapy (PTT) is a promising cancer therapy modality with significant advantages such as precise targeting, convenient drug delivery, better efficacy, and minimal adverse effects. Photothermal therapy effectively absorbs the photothermal transducers in the near-infrared region (NIR), which induces the photothermal effect to work. Although PTT has a better role in tumor therapy, it also suffers from low photothermal conversion efficiency, biosafety, and incomplete tumor elimination. Therefore, the use of nanomaterials themselves as photosensitizers, the targeted modification of nanomaterials to improve targeting efficiency, or the combined use of nanomaterials with other therapies can improve the therapeutic effects and reduce side effects. Notably, noble metal nanomaterials have attracted much attention in PTT because they have strong surface plasmon resonance and an effective absorbance light at specific near-infrared wavelengths. Therefore, they can be used as excellent photosensitizers to mediate photothermal conversion and improve its efficiency. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the key role played by noble metal nanomaterials in tumor photothermal therapy. It also describes the major challenges encountered during the implementation of photothermal therapy.

Multifunctional mesoporous silica nanoparticles for biomedical applications

Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) are recognized as a prime example of nanotechnology applied in the biomedical field, due to their easily tunable structure and composition, diverse surface functionalization properties, and excellent biocompatibility. Over the past two decades, researchers have developed a wide variety of MSNs-based nanoplatforms through careful design and controlled preparation techniques, demonstrating their adaptability to various biomedical application scenarios. With the continuous breakthroughs of MSNs in the fields of biosensing, disease diagnosis and treatment, tissue engineering, etc., MSNs are gradually moving from basic research to clinical trials. In this review, we provide a detailed summary of MSNs in the biomedical field, beginning with a comprehensive overview of their development history. We then discuss the types of MSNs-based nanostructured architectures, as well as the classification of MSNs-based nanocomposites according to the elements existed in various inorganic functional components. Subsequently, we summarize the primary purposes of surface-functionalized modifications of MSNs. In the following, we discuss the biomedical applications of MSNs, and highlight the MSNs-based targeted therapeutic modalities currently developed. Given the importance of clinical translation, we also summarize the progress of MSNs in clinical trials. Finally, we take a perspective on the future direction and remaining challenges of MSNs in the biomedical field.

Platinum based theranostics nanoplatforms for antitumor applications

Platinum (Pt) based nanoplatforms are biocompatible nanoagents with photothermal antitumor performance, while exhibiting excellent radiotherapy sensitization properties. Pt-nanoplatforms have extensive research prospects in the realm of cancer treatment due to their highly selective and minimally invasive treatment mode with low damage, and integrated diagnosis and treatment with image monitoring and collaborative drug delivery. Platinum based anticancer chemotherapeutic drugs can kill tumor cells by damaging DNA through chemotherapy. Meanwhile, Pt-nanoplatforms also have good electrocatalytic activity, which can mediate novel electrodynamic therapy. Simultaneously, Pt(II) based compounds also have potential as photosensitizers in photodynamic therapy for malignant tumors. Pt-nanoplatforms can also modulate the immunosuppressive environment and synergistically ablate tumor cells in combination with immune checkpoint inhibitors. This article reviews the research progress of platinum based nanoplatforms in new technologies for cancer therapy, starting from widely representative examples of platinum based nanoplatforms in chemotherapy, electrodynamic therapy, photodynamic therapy, photothermal therapy, and immunotherapy. Finally, multimodal imaging techniques of platinum based nanoplatforms for biomedical diagnosis are briefly discussed.

Recent advances of lanthanide nanomaterials in Tumor NIR fluorescence detection and treatment

Lanthanide nanomaterials have garnered significant attention from researchers among the main near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent nanomaterials due to their excellent chemical and fluorescence stability, narrow emission band, adjustable luminescence color, and long lifetime. In recent years, with the preparation, functional modification, and fluorescence improvement of lanthanide materials, great progress has been made in their application in the biomedical field. This review focuses on the latest progress of lanthanide nanomaterials in tumor diagnosis and treatment, as well as the interaction mechanism between fluorescence and biological tissues. We introduce a set of efficient strategies for improving the fluorescence properties of lanthanide nanomaterials and discuss some representative in-depth research work in detail, showcasing their superiority in early detection of ultra-small tumors, phototherapy, and real-time guidance for surgical resection. However, lanthanide nanomaterials have only realized a portion of their potential in tumor applications so far. Therefore, we discuss promising methods for further improving the performance of lanthanide nanomaterials and their future development directions.

Emerging platinum(0) nanotherapeutics for efficient cancer therapy

Platinum (Pt)-based chemotherapy has been necessary for clinical cancer treatment. However, traditional bivalent drugs are hindered by poor physicochemical properties, severe toxic side effects, and drug resistance. Currently, elemental Pt(0) nanotherapeutics (NTs) have emerged to tackle the dilemma. The inherent acid-responsiveness of Pt(0) NTs could help to improve tumor selectivity and alleviate toxic effects. Moreover, the metal nature of Pt facilitates the great combination of Pt(0) NTs with photothermal and photodynamic therapy and imaging-guided diagnosis. Based on recent important researches, this review provides an updated introduction to Pt(0) NTs. First, the challenges of traditional Pt-based chemotherapy have been outlined. Then, Pt(0) NTs with multiple applications of tumor theranostics have been overviewed. Furthermore, the combinations of Pt(0) NTs with other therapeutical modalities are introduced. Last but not least, we envision the possible challenges and prospects associated with Pt(0) NTs.

Platinum nanoplatforms: classic catalysts claiming a prominent role in cancer therapy

Platinum nanoparticles (Pt NPs) have a well-established role as a classic heterogeneous catalyst. Also, Pt has traditionally been employed as a component of organometallic drug formulations for chemotherapy. However, a new role in cancer therapy is emerging thanks to its outstanding catalytic properties, enabling novel approaches that are surveyed in this review. Herein, we critically discuss results already obtained and attempt to ascertain future perspectives for Pt NPs as catalysts able to modify key processes taking place in the tumour microenvironment (TME). In addition, we explore relevant parameters affecting the cytotoxicity, biodistribution and clearance of Pt nanosystems. We also analyze pros and cons in terms of biocompatibility and potential synergies that emerge from combining the catalytic capabilities of Pt with other agents such as co-catalysts, external energy sources (near-infrared light, X-ray, electric currents) and conventional therapies.

A CORM loaded nanoplatform for single NIR light-activated bioimaging, gas therapy, and photothermal therapy in vitro

Carbon monoxide (CO) can cause mitochondrial dysfunction, inducing apoptosis of cancer cells, which sheds light on a potential alternative for cancer treatment. However, the existing CO-based compounds are inherently limited by their chemical nature, such as high biological toxicity and uncontrolled CO release. Therefore, a nanoplatform - UmPF - that addresses such pain points is urgently in demand. In this study, we have proposed a nanoplatform irradiated by near-infrared (NIR) light to release CO. Iron pentacarbonyl (Fe(CO)₅) was loaded in the mesoporous polydopamine layer that was coated on rare-earth upconverting nanoparticles (UCNPs). The absorption wavelength of Fe(CO)₅ overlaps with the emission bands of the UCNPs in the UV-visible light range, and therefore the emissions from the UCNPs can be used to incite Fe(CO)₅ to control the release of CO. Besides, the catechol groups, which are abundant in the polydopamine structure, serve as an ideal locating spot to chelate with Fe(CO)₅; in the meantime, the mesoporous structure of the polydopamine layer improves the loading efficiency of Fe(CO)₅ and reduces its biological toxicity. The photothermal effect (PTT) of the polydopamine layer is highly controllable by adjusting the external laser intensity, irradiation time and the thickness of the polydopamine layer. The results illustrate that the combination of CO gas therapy (GT) and polydopamine PTT brought by the final nanoplatform can be synergistic in killing cancer cells in vitro. More importantly, the possible toxic side effects can be effectively prevented from affecting the organism, since CO will not be released in this system without near-infrared light radiation.

Biomimetic Platform Based on Mesoporous Platinum for Multisynergistic Cancer Therapy

Photothermal therapy (PTT) using nanoparticles is one of the research hotspots in the field of cancer therapy. However, the thermal resistance of tumor cells and the elimination of nanoparticles by the body's immune system reduce their therapeutic effect. Therefore, it is essential to reduce heat resistance, improve their biocompatibility, and reduce the clearance of the immune system. In this work, we constructed a biomimetic platform for cancer therapy based on heat shock protein (HSP) inhibitors, 17-dimethylaminoethylamino-17-demethoxygeldanamycin (17-DMAG))-loaded and platelet membrane (PM)-coated mesoporous platinum nanoparticles (MPNPs). First, MPNPs with the properties of chemotherapy and PTT were synthesized to load 17-DMAG (17-DMAG/MPNPs). Then, they were coated with PM for tumor targeting and improved biocompatibility to obtain the final bionic nanotherapy platform 17-DMAG/MPNPs@PM. The results in vivo and in vitro showed that 17-DMAG/MPNPs@PM could accumulate in the tumor and effectively inhibit the growth of tumor cells. Therefore, the biomimetic nanotherapy system is expected to provide new ideas for cancer treatment.

Maltodextrin-Conjugated Gd-Based MRI Contrast Agents for Specific Diagnosis of Bacterial Infections

Bacterial infections are one of the most serious health risks worldwide, and their rapid diagnosis remains a major challenge in clinic. To enhance the relaxivity and bacterial specificity of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents, here, a kind of gadolinium-based nanoparticles (NPs) of impressive biocompatibility is constructed as a contrast agent for maltodextrin-mediated bacteria-targeted diagnosis. To realize this, positively charged ultrasmall gadolinium oxide (Gd₂O₃, 2-3 nm) NPs are embedded in mesoporous silica NPs (MSN) with pore size around 6.38 nm. The resulting Gd₂O₃@MSN exhibits enhanced r₁ value and T₁-weighted MRI performance. Interestingly, upon conjugation of Gd₂O₃@MSN with maltodextrin to produce Gd₂O₃@MSN-Malt NPs, a remarkable decrease in internalization by osteosarcoma cells, alongside an increased adsorption toward E. coli and S. aureus, is achieved. It is therefore conceivable that the bacteria-targeted Gd₂O₃@MSN-Malt might be a promising MRI contrast agent for effective discrimination of bacterial infections from tumor.

Noble Metal Nanomaterials for NIR-Triggered Photothermal Therapy in Cancer

It is of great significance to develop anticancer therapeutic agents or technologies with high degree of specificity and patient compliance, while low toxicity. The emerging photothermal therapy (PTT) has become a new and powerful therapeutic technology due to its noninvasiveness, high specificity, low side effects to normal tissues and strong anticancer efficacy. Noble metal nanomaterials possess strong surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect and synthetic tunability, which make them facile and effective PTT agents with superior optical and photothermal characteristics, such as high absorption cross-section, incomparable optical-thermal conversion efficiency in the near infrared (NIR) region, as well as the potential of bioimaging. By incorporating with various functional reagents such as antibodies, peptides, biocompatible polymers, chemo-drug and immune factors, noble metal nanomaterials have presented strong potential in multifunctional cancer therapy. Herein, the recent development regarding the application of noble metal nanomaterials for NIR-triggered PTT in cancer treatment is summarized. A variety of studies with good therapeutic effects against cancer from impressive photothermal efficacy of noble metal nanomaterials are concluded. Intelligent nanoplatforms through ingenious fabrication showing potential of multifunctional PTT, combined with chemo-therapy, immunotherapy, photodynamic therapy (PDT), as well as simultaneous imaging modality are also demonstrated.

New Oral Coaxial Nanofibers for Gadodiamide-Prospective Intestinal Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Theranostic

PURPOSE

Gadodiamide (GDD) is a widely used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agent. It is available only as intravenous injection. Unfortunately, it exhibits a high renal toxicity. In this respect, the author investigated the possibility of developing nanofibers (NFs, one-dimensional (1D) nanostructures) of GDD that would be promising for oral administration in intestinal imaging. NFs are prepared by electrospinning technique in which a strong electrostatic field is applied on a polymer solution.

METHODS

NFs were prepared by coaxial electrospinning technique using Eudragit S100 (ES 100) as a shell layer and GDD loaded with polyvinylpyrrolidone K90 (PVP K90) and hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CyD) as core fibers. Compatibility study of the NFs ingredients was attested through ATR and DSC investigations. Thermogravimetric analysis of NFs was done to insure its stability. In vitro release of GDD in the intestinal medium with different pH values was measured. In vitro cytotoxicity test was done to prove its safety. Additionally, stability of NFs to perform its function was examined by X-ray.

RESULTS

NFs experienced high entrapment efficiency of about 94.3% ± 3.1%. The ingredients of NFs were compatible through FT-IR and DSC study. The in vitro release data of GDD from coaxial NFs were slow (˂14%) in pH 1.2 till 2 h, while at pH 7.4 it showed burst release of about 12% in the first 2 min. Thermogravimetric analysis proved the NFs are stable. The in vitro cytotoxicity study proved the safety of NFs. Using mammography, the coaxial NFs behaved the same as GDD plain indicating its ability to be a contrasting agent.

CONCLUSION

Coaxial NFs of GDD as a core with PVP K90 and HP-β-CyD and ES 100 as a shell were stable and efficient as oral imaging dosage form for the intestine. It might be a prospective theranostic.

Rapid Decomposition and Catalytic Cascade Nanoplatforms Based on Enzymes and Mn-Etched Dendritic Mesoporous Silicon for MRI-Guided Synergistic Therapy

The endogenous tumor microenvironment (TME) can signally influence the therapeutic effects of cancer, so it is necessary to explore effective synergistic therapeutic strategies based on changing of the TME. Here, a catalytic cascade nanoplatform based on manganese (Mn)-etched dendritic mesoporous silicon nanoparticles (designated as DMMnSiO₃ NPs) loaded with indocyanine green (ICG) and natural glucose oxidase (GOD) is established (designated as DIG nanocomposites). As the Mn-O bonds in DMMnSiO₃ NPs are susceptive to mildly acidic and reducing environments, the DIG nanocomposites can be rapidly decomposed because of the biodegradation of DMMnSiO₃ NPs once internalized into the tumor by the consumption of glutathione (GSH) in TME to weaken the antioxidant capability of the tumors. The released Mn²⁺ could catalyze endogenous hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) to generate oxygen (O₂) to relieve the hypoxia in TME. The generation of O₂ may promote the catalyzed oxidation of glucose by GOD, which will cut off nutrient supplies, accompanied by the regeneration of H₂O₂. The regenerated H₂O₂ could be sequentially catalyzed by Mn²⁺ to compensate for the consumed O₂, and thus, the catalytic cascade process between Mn²⁺ and GOD was set up. As a result, a synergistic therapeutic strategy based on T₁-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of Mn²⁺, starvation therapy by O₂-compensation enhanced catalyzing glucose, dual-model (GSH consumption and O₂ compensation) enhanced photodynamic therapy, and effective photothermal therapy of ICG (η = 23.8%) under 808 nm laser irradiation has been successfully established.

A thieno-isoindigo derivative-based conjugated polymer nanoparticle for photothermal therapy in the NIR-II bio-window

Photothermal therapy (PTT), a powerful tool for non-invasive cancer treatment, has been recognized as an alternative strategy for cancer therapy in the clinic, and it is promoted by optical absorbing agents (photothermal agents) that can intensively convert near-infrared (NIR) light into thermal energy for cancer ablation. Conjugated polymer nanoparticles (CPNs) have recently attracted extensive attention owing to their excellent photothermal properties. However, the absorption of typical CPNs is mostly located in the traditional near-infrared region (NIR-I, 700-900 nm), which suffers from low tissue penetration, so the penetration depth is still limited and severely restricts their further applications. Compared with the NIR-I light, the second near-infrared window light (NIR-II, 1000-1700 nm) could efficiently enhance the tissue penetration depth, however, CPNs which absorb NIR-II region light are still especially limited and need further exploration. Here, a thieno-isoindigo derivative-based Donor-Acceptor (D-A) polymer (BTPBFDTS), which exhibited excellent absorption characteristics from the NIR-I to NIR-II window, was prepared. After formation of nanoparticles and surface functionalization, the prepared nanoparticles (NPsBTPBFDTS@HA NPs) exhibited obvious targeting ability, high photothermal conversion efficiency and photoacoustic imaging effects under 1064 nm irradiation. Both in vitro and in vivo studies demonstrate that our obtained NPsBTPBFDTS@HA nanoparticles possess excellent PTT efficacy including extremely high cancer cell killing ability and admirable tumor elimination efficiency. Hence, this work developed a promising photothermal conversion agent based on CPNs for cancer ablation.

Ultrasmall Peptide-Coated Platinum Nanoparticles for Precise NIR-II Photothermal Therapy by Mitochondrial Targeting

Photothermal therapy (PTT) is considered an alternative for oncotherapy because it has less invasive damage to normal tissues than other methods, particularly in second near-infrared (NIR-II) PTT (1000-1350 nm) because of deeper biological tissue penetration, lower photon scattering, and higher maximum permissible exposure (1.0 W cm^-2). However, for achieving a higher therapeutic effect, the delivery of large amounts of NIR-sensitive agents has been pursued, which in turn enormously increases damage to normal cells. Herein, we developed peptide-coated platinum nanoparticles (TPP-Pt) to create violent damage for a given amount of hyperthermia by purposefully delivering TPP-Pt to the thermally susceptible mitochondria with minimal side effects. Mitochondrial peptide targeting endowed ultrasmall platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs) with monodispersity, high stability, biosafety, and enhanced uptake of cancer cells and priority of mitochondria, causing efficient PTT. Moreover, an in vivo experiment showed that the excellent tumor inhibitory effect and negligible side effects could be achieved with the preferentially striking thermosensitive mitochondria strategy. The mitochondria-based "win by one move" therapeutic platform of peptide-coated platinum nanoparticles (TPP-Pt) demonstrated here will find great potential to overcome the challenges of low therapeutic efficiency and strong systemic side effects in PTT.

Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles in Bioimaging

A biomedical contrast agent serves to enhance the visualisation of a specific (potentially targeted) physiological region. In recent years, mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) have developed as a flexible imaging platform of tuneable size/morphology, abundant surface chemistry, biocompatibility and otherwise useful physiochemical properties. This review discusses MSN structural types and synthetic strategies, as well as methods for surface functionalisation. Recent applications in biomedical imaging are then discussed, with a specific emphasis on magnetic resonance and optical modes together with utility in multimodal imaging.

Luminescence Tunable Europium and Samarium Complexes: Reversible On/Off Switching and White-Light Emission

Single-molecule functional materials with luminescence tunable by external stimuli are of increasing interest due to their application in sensors, display devices, biomarkers, and switches. Herein, new europium and samarium complexes with ligands having triphenylamine (TPA) groups as the redox center and 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) as the coordinating groups and diketonate (tta) as the second ligand have been constructed. The complexes show white-light emission in selected solvents for proper mixtures of the emission from Ln³⁺ ions and the ligands. Meanwhile, they exhibit reversible luminescence switching on/off properties by controlling the external potential owing to intramolecular energy transfer from the Ln³⁺ ions to the electrochemically generated radical cation of TPA^•+. Time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations have been performed to study the electronic spectra. The proposed intramolecular energy transfer processes have been verified by density functional theory (DFT) studies.

PEG-coated and Gd-loaded fluorescent silica nanoparticles for targeted prostate cancer magnetic resonance imaging and fluorescence imaging

Background: Multimodal imaging probes have become a powerful tool for improving detection sensitivity and accuracy, which are important in disease diagnosis and treatment.

Methods: In this study, novel bifunctional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)/fluorescence probes were prepared by loading gadodiamide into fluorescent silica nanoparticles (NPs) (Gd@Cy5.5@SiO₂-PEG-Ab NPs) for targeting of prostate cancer (PCa). The physicochemical characteristics, biosafety and PCa cell targeting ability of the Gd@Cy5.5@SiO₂-PEG-Ab NPs were studied in vitro and in vivo.

Results: The Gd@Cy5.5@SiO₂-PEG-Ab NPs had a spherical morphology with a relatively uniform size distribution and demonstrated high efficiency for Gd loading. In vitro and in vivo cell-targeting experiments demonstrated a high potential for the synthesized NPs to target prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) receptor-positive PCa cells, enabling MRI and fluorescence imaging. In vitro cytotoxicity assays and in vivo hematological and pathological assays showed that the prepared NPs exhibited good biological safety.

Conclusion: Our study demonstrates that the synthesized Gd@Cy5.5@SiO₂-PEG-Ab NPs have great potential as MRI/fluorescence contrast agents for specific identification of PSMA receptor-positive PCa cells.

Renal Clearable Bi-Bi2S3 Heterostructure Nanoparticles for Targeting Cancer Theranostics

Recent development of precise nanomedicine has aroused an overwhelming interest in integration of diagnosis and treatment for cancers. Designing renal-clearable and targeting nanoparticles (NPs) has specific cancer theranostic implications and remains a challenging task. In this work, the ultrasmall folic acid (FA) and bovine serum albumin-modified Bi-Bi₂S₃ heterostructure nanoparticles NPs (Bi-Bi₂S₃/BSA&FA NPs) with excellent computed tomography (CT) and photoacoustic imaging abilities and outstanding photothermal performances were synthesized in an aqueous phase route via a simple method. Bi-Bi₂S₃/BSA&FA NPs have the following criteria: (i) Bi-Bi₂S₃/BSA&FA NPs with heterostructure possess better stability than Bi NPs and higher Bi content than Bi₂S₃ NPs, which are conducive to the enhancement of CT imaging effect; (ii) Bi-Bi₂S₃/BSA&FA NPs with FA molecules on the surface could target the tumor site effectively; (iii) Bi-Bi₂S₃/BSA&FA NPs could inhibit tumor growth effectively under 808 nm laser irradiation; (iv) ultrasmall Bi-Bi₂S₃/BSA&FA NPs could be cleared through kidney and liver within a reasonable time, avoiding a long-term retention/toxicity. Therefore, the renal clearable Bi-Bi₂S₃/BSA&FA NPs are a promising agent for targeting cancer theranostics.

Facile Fabrication of Magnetic Microrobots Based on Spirulina Templates for Targeted Delivery and Synergistic Chemo-Photothermal Therapy

Magnetic microrobots can be actuated in fuel-free conditions and are envisioned for biomedical applications related to targeted delivery and therapy in a minimally invasive manner. However, mass fabrication of microrobots with precise propulsion performance and excellent therapeutic efficacy is still challenging, especially in a predictable and controllable manner. Herein, we propose a facile technique for mass production of magnetic microrobots with multiple functions using Spirulina ( Sp.) as biotemplate. Core-shell-structured Pd@Au nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized in Sp. cells by electroless deposition, working as photothermal conversion agents. Subsequently, the Fe₃O₄ NPs were deposited onto the surface of the obtained (Pd@Au)@ Sp. particles via a sol-gel process, enabling them to be magnetically actuated. Moreover, the anticancer drug doxorubicin (DOX) was loaded on the (Pd@Au)/Fe₃O₄@ Sp. microrobots, which endows them with additional chemotherapeutic efficacy. The as-prepared biohybrid (Pd@Au)/Fe₃O₄@ Sp.-DOX microrobots not only possess efficient propulsion performance with the highest speed of 526.2 μm/s under a rotating magnetic field but also have enhanced synergistic chemo-photothermal therapeutic efficacy. Furthermore, they can be structurally disassembled into individual particles under near-infrared (NIR) laser irradiation and exhibit pH- and NIR-triggered drug release. These intriguing properties enable the microrobots to be a very promising and efficient platform for drug loading, targeted delivery, and chemo-photothermal therapy.

Recent Advances in Functional-Polymer-Decorated Transition-Metal Nanomaterials for Bioimaging and Cancer Therapy

In this review, we focus on recent advances in the synthesis of polymer-functionalized transition-metal-based nanomaterials and follow this up by discussing their applications in bioimaging diagnosis and cancer therapy. Transition-metal-based nanomaterials show great potential in cancer therapy owing to their intensive near-IR absorption, excellent photothermal conversion efficiency, strong X-ray attenuation, and magnetic properties. Functional polymers are usually introduced by a one-step or multistep method to further endow these nanomaterials with great biocompatibility and physiological stability. Polymer-decorated transition-metal nanomaterials show great potential in multimodal imaging diagnosis (photoacoustic imaging, computed tomography, photoluminescence imaging, positron emission tomography, etc.) and cancer therapy (chemotherapy, photothermal therapy, microwave therapy, radiotherapy, photodynamic therapy). At the end of this review, the prospects of these polymer-decorated transition-metal-based nanomaterials are also discussed.
