Photon upconversion in organic nanoparticles and subsequent amplification by plasmonic silver nanowires

Optimization of a silver-nanoprism conjugated with 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine towards easy-to-make colorimetric analysis of acetaldehyde: a new platform towards rapid analysis of carcinogenic agents and environmental technology

Acetaldehyde acts as an important mediator in the metabolism of plants and animals; however, its abnormal level can cause problems in biological processes. Although acetaldehyde is found naturally in many organisms, exposure to high concentrations can have effects on the eyes, respiratory system, etc. Due to the importance of detecting acetaldehyde in environmental samples and biofluids, determination of its concentration is highly demanded. There are some reports showing exposure to high concentrations of acetaldehyde for a long time can increase the risk of cancer by reacting with DNA. In this work, we presented a novel colorimetric method for rapid and sensitive detection of acetaldehyde with high reproducibility using different AgNPs with various morphologies. The redox reaction between AgNPs, 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) solution, and analytes endows a color change in 15 minutes that is detectable by the naked eye. UV spectrophotometry was further used for quantitative analysis. An iron mold with a hexagonal pattern and liquid paraffin were also used to prepare the paper-based microfluidic substrate, as a low cost, accessible, and rapid detection tool. Different types of AgNPs showed different lower limits of quantification (LLOQ). The AgNPs-Cit and AgNPrs could identify acetaldehyde with linear range of 10^-7 to 10 M and an LLOQ of 10^-7 M. The AgNWs showed the best color change activity with a linear range 10^-5 to 10 M and the lowest diagnostic limit is 10^-5 M. Finally, analysis of human biofluids as real samples were successfully performed using this system.

Enhanced chiroptic properties of nanocomposites of achiral plasmonic nanoparticles decorated with chiral dye-loaded micelles

The development of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL)-active materials with both large luminescence dissymmetry factor (g_lum) and high emission efficiency continues to be a major challenge. Here, we present an approach to improve the overall CPL performance by integrating triplet-triplet annihilation-based photon upconversion (TTA-UC) with localized surface plasmon resonance. Dye-loaded chiral micelles possessing TTA-UC ability are designed and attached on the surface of achiral gold nanorods (AuNRs). The longitudinal and transversal resonance peaks of AuNRs overlap with the absorption and emission of dye-loaded chiral micelles, respectively. Typically, 43-fold amplification of g_lum value accompanied by 3-fold enhancement of upconversion are obtained simultaneously when Au@Ag nanorods are employed in the composites. More importantly, transient absorption spectra reveal a fast accumulation of spin-polarized triplet excitons in the composites. Therefore, the enhancement of chirality-induced spin polarization should be in charge of the amplification of g_lum value. Our design strategy suggests that combining plasmonic nanomaterials with chiral organic materials could aid in the development of chiroptical nanomaterials.

Silica Shell Thickness-Dependent Fluorescence Properties of SiO2@Ag@SiO2@QDs Nanocomposites

Silica shell coatings, which constitute important technology for nanoparticle (NP) developments, are utilized in many applications. The silica shell's thickness greatly affects distance-dependent optical properties, such as metal-enhanced fluorescence (MEF) and fluorescence quenching in plasmonic nanocomposites. However, the precise control of silica-shell thicknesses has been mainly conducted on single metal NPs, and rarely on complex nanocomposites. In this study, silica shell-coated Ag nanoparticle-assembled silica nanoparticles (SiO₂@Ag@SiO₂), with finely controlled silica shell thicknesses (4 nm to 38 nm), were prepared, and quantum dots (QDs) were introduced onto SiO₂@Ag@SiO₂. The dominant effect between plasmonic quenching and MEF was defined depending on the thickness of the silica shell between Ag and QDs. When the distance between Ag NPs to QDs was less than ~10 nm, SiO₂@Ag@SiO₂@QDs showed weaker fluorescence intensities than SiO₂@QD (without metal) due to the quenching effect. On the other hand, when the distance between Ag NPs to QDs was from 10 nm to 14 nm, the fluorescence intensity of SiO₂@Ag@SiO₂@QD was stronger than SiO₂@QDs due to MEF. The results provide background knowledge for controlling the thickness of silica shells in metal-containing nanocomposites and facilitate the development of potential applications utilizing the optimal plasmonic phenomenon.

Amplifying the excited state chirality through self-assembly and subsequent enhancement via plasmonic silver nanowires

The development of circularly polarized luminescent materials with a large luminescence dissymmetry factor (g_lum) is continuing to be a big challenge. Here, we present a general approach for amplifying circular polarization of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) through intergrating molecular self-assembly and surface plasmon resonance (SPR). Molecular self-assembly could amplify the CPL performance. Subsequently, the composites built of nanoassemblies and achiral silver nanowires (AgNWs) show intense CPL activity with an amplified g_lum value. By applying an external magnetic field, the CPL activity of the nanoassemblies/AgNWs composites has been significantly enhanced, confirming a plasmon-enhanced circular polarization. Our design strategy based on SPR-enhanced circular polarization of the chiral emissive systems suggests that combining plasmonic nanomaterials with chiral organic materials could aid in the development of novel CPL active nanomaterials.

Metal-enhancement study of dual functional photosensitizers with aggregation-induced emission and singlet oxygen generation

Photosensitizers with aggregation-induced emission (AIE-PS) are attractive for image-guided photodynamic therapy due to their dual functional role in generating singlet oxygen and producing high fluorescent signal in the aggregated state. However, their brightness and treatment efficiency maybe limited in current practice. Herein we report the first systematic investigation on the metal-enhanced fluorescence (MEF) and singlet oxygen generation (ME-SOG) ability of our newly synthesized AIE-photosensitizers. The Ag@AIE-PS of varied sizes were prepared via layer-by-layer assembly with controlled distance between silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and AIE-PS. A maximum of 6-fold enhancement in fluorescence and 2-fold increment in SOG were observed for the 85nmAg@AIE-PS. Comprehensive characterization and simulation were conducted to unravel the plasmon-enhancement mechanisms of Ag@AIE-PS. Results show that MEF of AIE-PS is determined by the enhanced electric field around AgNPs, while ME-SOG is dictated by the scattering efficiency of the metal core, where bigger AgNPs would result in larger enhancement factor. Furthermore, the optimum distance between AgNPs and AIE-PS to achieve maximum SOG enhancement is shorter than that required for the highest MEF. The correlation of MEF and ME-SOG found in this study is useful for designing new a generation of AIE-photosensitizers with high brightness and treatment efficiency towards practical theranostic application in the future.

Tetraphenylethene 9,10-Diphenylanthracene Derivatives - Synthesis and Photophysical Properties

A series of tetraphenylethene 9,10-diphenylanthracene (TPE-DPA) derivatives have been synthesized, and their photophysical properties studied. Photoluminescence measurements in PMMA, neat films and nanoparticle dispersions reveal that different aggregation states are formed, which leads to different photophysical behavior. The triplet excited state properties were studied using Pt(II) octaethylporphyrin (PtOEP) as triplet sensitizer. Upconverted emission from the DPA moiety is observed in nanoparticle dispersions of each derivative. A higher upconverted emission intensity is observed in aerated (compared to deaerated) solutions of the derivatives following irradiation, which is attributed to oxidation of the TPE moiety. These results provide valuable insight for the design of AIE luminogens for triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion (TTA-UC).
