Switchable ferroelectric photovoltaic effects in epitaxial h-RFeO3 thin films

Coherent charge hopping suppresses photoexcited small polarons in ErFeO3 by antiadiabatic formation mechanism

Polarons are prevalent in condensed matter systems with strong electron-phonon coupling. The adiabaticity of the polaron relates to its transport properties and spatial extent. To date, only adiabatic small polaron formation has been measured following photoexcitation. The lattice reorganization energy is large enough that the first electron-optical phonon scattering event creates a small polaron without requiring substantial carrier thermalization. We measure that frustrating the iron-centered octahedra in the rare-earth orthoferrite ErFeO3 leads to antiadiabatic polaron formation. Coherent charge hopping between neighboring Fe3+─Fe2+ sites is measured with transient extreme ultraviolet spectroscopy and lasts several picoseconds before the polaron forms. The resulting small polaron formation time is an order of magnitude longer than previous measurements and indicates a shallow potential well, even in the excited state. The results emphasize the importance of considering dynamic electron-electron correlations, not just electron-phonon-induced lattice changes, for small polarons for transport, catalysis, and photoexcited applications.

Revisiting the Ferroelectric Photovoltaic Properties of Vertical BiFeO3 Capacitors: A Comprehensive Study

The ferroelectric photovoltaic effect has been extensively studied for possible applications in energy conversion and photo-electrics. The reversible spontaneous polarization gives rise to a switchable photovoltaic behavior. However, despite its long history, the origin of the ferroelectric photovoltaic effect still lacks a full understanding since multiple mechanisms such as bulk and Schottky-barrier-related interface effects are involved. Herein, we report a comprehensive study on the photovoltaic response of BiFeO₃-based vertical heterostructures, using multiple strategies to clarify its origin. We found that, under white light illumination, polarization-modulated Schottky barrier at the interface is the dominating mechanism. By varying the top metal contacts, only the photovoltaic effect of the polarization downward state is strongly modulated, suggesting selective interface contribution in different polarization states. A Schottky-barrier-free device shows negligible photovoltaic effect, suggesting the lack of bulk photovoltaic effect in vertical heterostructures under white light illumination.

A bio-analytic nanoplatform based on Au post-functionalized CeFeO3 for the simultaneous determination of melatonin and ascorbic acid through photo-assisted electrochemical technology

Both melatonin and ascorbic acid could perform an irreplaceable role in maintaining the ecological balance of the human body and fighting cardiovascular diseases. Herein, a dual-channel photo-assisted electrochemical sensor has been fabricated based on Au post-functionalized CeFeO₃ nanospheres to simultaneously monitor melatonin and ascorbic acid for the first time. Briefly, CeFeO₃ nanospheres are prepared through a hydrothermal and annealing process, and then the reduced Au nanoclusters are anchored on the surface of spheres to afford the CeFeO₃@Au bi-nanospherical sensing probe. Impressively, the pre-fabricated sensor can produce a current signal 11% higher under light than that produced in a dark environment during the electrochemical measurements. Subsequently, the sensor fabricated by our strategy has achieved the simultaneous determination of melatonin and ascorbic acid with the wide detecting ranges of 1 nM-5 μM and 1 nM to 2 μM, and low detection limits of 0.8 nM and 0.4 nM by electrochemical measurements with the presence of the sunlight, and has shown satisfactory recoveries in the real sample measurements, demonstrating that the CeFeO₃@Au bi-nanospherical sensing probe will be an auspicious candidate of advanced electrode material in photo-assisted electrochemical sensing applications.

Exploring a Fatigue-Free Layered Hybrid Perovskite Ferroelectric for Photovoltaic Non-Volatile Memories

Through a functional unit-transmutation strategy, a fatigue-free layered hybrid perovskite ferroelectric (C₆ H₅ CH₂ NH₃ )₂ CsPb₂ Br₇ (BCPB) has been developed, which demonstrates stable spontaneous polarization (P_s ) of 6.5 μC cm^-2 and high Curie temperature up to 425 K. Meanwhile, BCPB shows splendid bulk photovoltaic effect (BPVE) properties with noticeable zero-bias photocurrent density (5 μA cm^-2 ), and high on/off switching ratio of current (over 3×10⁵ ); these merits even overmatch the most known ferroelectric semiconductor BiFeO₃ . The unique structure with self-regulated net electrical charged layers gives rise to the fatigue-free feature of P_s and BPVE (no significant fatigue after 10⁸ polarity switching cycles), promoting the potential applications of BCPB in photovoltaic non-volatile memories. This work offers an efficient approach for exploring fatigue-free semiconducting ferroelectrics as well as excavates their further applications in next-generation electronic devices.

Negative differential resistance effect in resistive switching devices based on h-LuFeO3/CoFe2O4 heterojunctions

The negative differential resistance (NDR) effect enables multilevel storage and gradual resistance modulation in resistive switching (RS) devices to be achieved. However, the poor reproducibility of NDR is the obstacle that restricts their application because the appearance of the NDR effect in RS devices is usually accidental or unstable at room temperature. In this report, we demonstrate a polarization and interfacial defect modulated NDR effect in h-LuFeO₃/CoFe₂O₄ heterojunction-based RS devices; especially, the NDR is reproducible after hundreds of cycles at room temperature. This research provides an effective way for realizing the reproducible NDR effect in ferroelectric RS devices, and it may promote the development and application of RS devices with the NDR effect.

Rare-earth-containing perovskite nanomaterials: design, synthesis, properties and applications

As star material, perovskites have been widely used in the fields of optics, photovoltaics, electronics, magnetics, catalysis, sensing, etc. However, some inherent shortcomings, such as low efficiency (power conversion efficiency, external quantum efficiency, etc.) and poor stability (against water, oxygen, ultraviolet light, etc.), limit their practical applications. Downsizing the materials into nanostructures and incorporating rare earth (RE) ions are effective means to improve their properties and broaden their applications. This review will systematically summarize the key points in the design, synthesis, property improvements and application expansion of RE-containing (including both RE-based and RE-doped) halide and oxide perovskite nanomaterials (PNMs). The critical factors of incorporating RE elements into different perovskite structures and the rational design of functional materials will be discussed in detail. The advantages and disadvantages of different synthesis methods for PNMs will be reviewed. This paper will also summarize some practical experiences in selecting suitable RE elements and designing multi-functional materials according to the mechanisms and principles of REs promoting the properties of perovskites. At the end of this review, we will provide an outlook on the opportunities and challenges of RE-containing PNMs in various fields.

Single-phase multiferroics: new materials, phenomena, and physics

Multiferroics, where multiple ferroic orders coexist and are intimately coupled, promise novel applications in conceptually new devices on one hand, and on the other hand provide fascinating physics that is distinctly different from the physics of high-T_C superconductors and colossal magnetoresistance manganites. In this mini-review, we highlight the recent progress of single-phase multiferroics in the exploration of new materials, efficient roadmaps for functionality enhancement, new phenomena beyond magnetoelectric coupling, and underlying novel physics. In the meantime, a slightly more detailed description is given of several multiferroics with ferrimagnetic orders and double-layered perovskite structure and also of recently emerging 2D multiferroics. Some emergent phenomena such as topological vortex domain structure, non-reciprocal response, and hybrid mechanisms for multiferroicity engineering and magnetoelectric coupling in various types of multiferroics will be briefly reviewed.

Perovskites with d-block metals for solar energy applications

Pb2+ halide organic-inorganic perovskites are excellent semiconductors for use in solar energy applications, but at the expense of robustness and environmental compatibility. Tin (Sn), which sits just above lead in the periodic table, forms pure (or mixed with lead) perovskites when at the 2+ or 4+ oxidation state. It can act as a promising alternative; however, there are still some serious concerns regarding its suitability. This presents a major challenge; viable metal cations have to be identified. A good number of elements, originating from a large range of d-block metal ions, with adequate oxidation states, moderate toxicity, and relative abundance, seem ideal for this purpose. In this review, we present the most characteristic perovskites (conventional perovskites, layered, or double perovskites) that can be formed with the help of these metals. We focus on d-block metal ions with stable oxidation states, such as Ag+ or Ti4+, which have exhibited satisfactory photovoltaic properties until now. Further, we highlight the results involving compounds other than halide perovskites, such as oxides, chalcogenides, and nitrides (as well as oxyhalides, oxysulfides, and oxynitrides); a few of them are ferroelectric (based on Ti4+, Zr4+, Fe3+, and Cr3+) and can yield a photovoltage that exceeds the bandgap of the material. Finally, we present the critical challenges that currently limit the efficiency of these systems and propose prospects for future directions.
