Programming hierarchical self-assembly of colloids: matching stability and accessibility

Size-encoded hierarchical self-assembly of nanoparticles into chains and tubules

Hierarchical structures with sophisticated patterns allow the emergence of challenging properties. However, the highly cooperative and specific interactions needed for assembly spanning different length scales are typically lacking in inorganic nanoparticles (NPs). Here we show that size can be a common structural driving force for controlling hierarchical assembly of inorganic NPs into anisotropic superstructures. It involves first the self-limiting assembly of small CdS NPs into large supraparticles and their subsequent spontaneous organization into chains and tubules hundreds of nanometers long. Our quantitative calculations based on DLVO theory reveals an intrinsic size effect relating to the dimension change of assembly units in accordance with a negative cooperativity. It is shown that the size increase in building blocks creates an effective kinetic barrier contrast at different attachment sites due to the increase of interparticle electrostatic repulsion, switching the assembly from thermodynamically preferred 3D to kinetically favored 1D pathway. The size-encoded hierarchical assembly is accompanied by the ligand-controlled Oswald ripening process, which is responsible for the variation of hierarchical patterns from chains to tubules. The general principle in governing multistage inorganic NP ordering represents an important guideline toward the complex mesoscale structures that may surpass traditional materials in both design and functionality.

Multifarious colloidal structures: new insight into ternary and quadripartite ordered assemblies

DNA-mediated assembly of colloidal particles can be utilized to produce a variety of structures which may have desirable phononic, photonic, or electronic transport properties. Recent developments in linker-mediated assembly processes allow for interactions to be coordinated between many different types of colloidal particles more easily and with fewer unique sequences than direct hybridization. However, the dynamics of colloidal self-assembly becomes increasingly more complex when coordinating interactions between three or more distinct interacting elements. In such cases particle pairs with similar binding energies are allowed to interact unpredictably, and enthalpically degenerate binding sites will be noticeably more present while numerous secondary phases may also result from the self-assembly process. Therefore, it is necessary to develop procedures for predicting feasible superstructure geometries for these systems before they can be implemented in material design. Here we investigate the formation of multifarious ordered structures through self-assembly of multiple types of spherically symmetrical colloidal particles with a variety of interaction matrices. We utilize Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations to study the growth behavior of systems with different types of interacting elements and different particle sizes, and also predict the formation and stability of the target structures. We also study the phononic spectra of various ternary structures in order to identify the influence of key structural parameters on phonon bandgap frequencies and ranges. Our results provide direct guidelines for designing ternary and quadripartite multifarious colloidal structures, and motivate new directions for future experimental work to target formation of multi-component colloidal superstructures beyond the well-established binary symmetries studied in the past.

Hierarchical self-assembly of polydisperse colloidal bananas into a two-dimensional vortex phase

Hierarchically self-assembled materials—structures with order at multiple length scales—can be found everywhere. Examples range from collagen structures in human bones to engineered photonic materials. These structures usually assemble from monodisperse microscopic building blocks that interact via complex directional interactions. In this work, we show that hierarchical materials can, in fact, also be assembled from polydisperse building blocks and by entropic interactions alone. Our simple yet powerful assembly mechanism opens up avenues toward rationally exploiting the often undesired polydispersity of colloidal building blocks for programming entropy-driven self-assembly of hierarchical materials.

Self-assembly of microscopic building blocks into highly ordered and functional structures is ubiquitous in nature and found at all length scales. Hierarchical structures formed by colloidal building blocks are typically assembled from monodisperse particles interacting via engineered directional interactions. Here, we show that polydisperse colloidal bananas self-assemble into a complex and hierarchical quasi–two-dimensional structure, called the vortex phase, only due to excluded volume interactions and polydispersity in the particle curvature. Using confocal microscopy, we uncover the remarkable formation mechanism of the vortex phase and characterize its exotic structure and dynamics at the single-particle level. These results demonstrate that hierarchical self-assembly of complex materials can be solely driven by entropy and shape polydispersity of the constituting particles.

Simulated clustering dynamics of colloidal magnetic nanoparticles

Magnetically guided self-assembly of nanoparticles is a promising bottom-up method to fabricate novel materials and superstructures, such as, for example, magnetic nanoparticle clusters for biomedical applications. The existence of assembled structures has been verified by numerous experiments, yet a comprehensive theoretical framework to explore design possibilities and predict emerging properties is missing. Here we present a model of magnetic nanoparticle interactions built upon a Langevin dynamics algorithm to simulate the time evolution and aggregation of colloidal suspensions. We recognise three main aggregation regimes: non-aggregated, linear and clustered. Through systematic simulations we have revealed the link between single particle parameters and which aggregates are formed, both in terms of the three regimes and the chance of finding specific aggregates, which we characterise by nanoparticle arrangement and net magnetic moment. Our findings are shown to agree with past experiments and may serve as a stepping stone to guide the design and interpretation of future studies.

Constructing Cross-Linked Nanofibrous Scaffold via Dual-Enzyme-Instructed Hierarchical Assembly

To explore the potential of step-by-step assembly in the fabrication of biological materials, we designed and synthesized two peptide-based molecules for enzyme-instructed hierarchical assembly. Upon the treatment of alkaline phosphatase, one molecule undergoes enzyme-instructed self-assembly forming uniformed nanofibers. The other one that can self-assemble into vesicles undergoes enzyme-induced transformation of self-assembly converting vesicles into irregular aggregates upon the treatment of carboxylesterase. Coadministration of two enzymes to a mixture of these two molecules in a stage-by-stage fashion leads to a physically knotted nanofibrous scaffold that is applicable as a nanostructured matrix for cell culture.

Leveraging Hierarchical Self-Assembly Pathways for Realizing Colloidal Photonic Crystals

Colloidal open crystals are attractive materials, especially for their photonic applications. Self-assembly appeals as a bottom-up route for structure fabrication, but self-assembly of colloidal open crystals has proven to be elusive for their mechanical instability due to being low-coordinated. For such a bottom-up route to yield a desired colloidal open crystal, the target structure is required to be thermodynamically favored for designer building blocks and also kinetically accessible via self-assembly pathways in preference to metastable structures. Additionally, the selection of a particular polymorph poses a challenge for certain much sought-after colloidal open crystals for their applications as photonic crystals. Here, we devise hierarchical self-assembly pathways, which, starting from designer triblock patchy particles, yield in a cascade of well-separated associations first tetrahedral clusters and then tetrastack crystals. The designed pathways avoid trapping into an amorphous phase. Our analysis reveals how such a two-stage self-assembly pathway via tetrahedral clusters promotes crystallization by suppressing five- and seven-membered rings that hinder the emergence of the ordered structure. We also find that slow annealing promotes a bias toward the cubic polymorph relative to the hexagonal counterpart. Finally, we calculate the photonic band structures, showing that the cubic polymorph exhibits a complete photonic band gap for the dielectric filling fraction directly realizable from the designer triblock patchy particles. Unexpectedly, we find that the hexagonal polymorph also supports a complete photonic band gap, albeit only for an increased filling fraction, which can be realized via postassembly processing.

Surface-triggered cascade reactions between DNA linkers direct the self-assembly of colloidal crystals of controllable thickness

Functionalizing colloids with reactive DNA linkers is a versatile way of programming self-assembly. DNA selectivity provides direct control over colloid-colloid interactions allowing the engineering of structures such as complex crystals or gels. However, the self-assembly of localized and finite structures remains an open problem with many potential applications. In this work, we present a system in which functionalized surfaces initiate a cascade reaction between linkers leading to the self-assembly of crystals with a controllable number of layers. Specifically, we consider colloidal particles functionalized by two families of complementary DNA linkers with mobile anchoring points, as found in experiments using emulsions or lipid bilayers. In bulk, intra-particle linkages formed by pairs of complementary linkers prevent the formation of inter-particle bridges and therefore colloid-colloid aggregation. However, colloids interact strongly with the surface given that the latter can destabilize intra-particle linkages. When in direct contact with the surface, colloids are activated, meaning that they feature more unpaired DNA linkers ready to react. Activated colloids can then capture and activate other colloids from the bulk through the formation of inter-particle linkages. Using simulations and theory, validated by existing experiments, we clarify the thermodynamics of the activation and binding process and explain how particle-particle interactions, within the adsorbed phase, weaken as a function of the distance from the surface. The latter observation underlies the possibility of self-assembling finite aggregates with controllable thickness and flat solid-gas interfaces. Our design suggests a new avenue to fabricate heterogeneous and finite structures.

A platform for nanomagnetism - assembled ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic dipolar tubes

We report an interesting case where magnetic phenomena can transcend mesoscopic scales. Our system consists of tubes created by the assembly of dipolar spheres. The cylindrical topology results in the breakup of degeneracy observed in planar square and triangular packings. As far as the ground state is concerned, the tubes switch from circular to axial magnetization with increasing tube length. All magnetostatic properties found in magnetic nanotubes, in which the dipolar interaction is comparable to or dominant over the exchange interaction, are reproduced by the dipolar tubes including an intermediary helically magnetized state. Besides, we discuss the antiferromagnetic phase resulting from the square arrangement of the dipolar spheres and its interesting vortex state.
