Abstract
Nitroxides, also known as nitroxyl radicals, are long-lived or stable radicals with the general structure R1R2N-O•. The spin distribution over the nitroxide N and O atoms contributes to the thermodynamic stability of these radicals. The presence of bulky N-substituents R1 and R2 prevents nitroxide radical dimerization, ensuring their kinetic stability. Despite their reactivity toward various transient C radicals, some nitroxides can be easily stored under air at room temperature. Furthermore, nitroxides can be oxidized to oxoammonium salts (R1R2N═O+) or reduced to anions (R1R2N-O-), enabling them to act as valuable oxidants or reductants depending on their oxidation state. Therefore, they exhibit interesting reactivity across all three oxidation states. Due to these fascinating properties, nitroxides find extensive applications in diverse fields such as biochemistry, medicinal chemistry, materials science, and organic synthesis. This review focuses on the versatile applications of nitroxides in organic synthesis. For their use in other important fields, we will refer to several review articles. The introductory part provides a brief overview of the history of nitroxide chemistry. Subsequently, the key methods for preparing nitroxides are discussed, followed by an examination of their structural diversity and physical properties. The main portion of this review is dedicated to oxidation reactions, wherein parent nitroxides or their corresponding oxoammonium salts serve as active species. It will be demonstrated that various functional groups (such as alcohols, amines, enolates, and alkanes among others) can be efficiently oxidized. These oxidations can be carried out using nitroxides as catalysts in combination with various stoichiometric terminal oxidants. By reducing nitroxides to their corresponding anions, they become effective reducing reagents with intriguing applications in organic synthesis. Nitroxides possess the ability to selectively react with transient radicals, making them useful for terminating radical cascade reactions by forming alkoxyamines. Depending on their structure, alkoxyamines exhibit weak C-O bonds, allowing for the thermal generation of C radicals through reversible C-O bond cleavage. Such thermally generated C radicals can participate in various radical transformations, as discussed toward the end of this review. Furthermore, the application of this strategy in natural product synthesis will be presented.

Abstract
A direct one-pot alkylation-aminoxidation of styrene derivatives was achieved using in situ-generated alkyl and N-oxyl radicals. The corresponding O-alkylated hydroxylamine derivatives were obtained in moderate to good yields. The reaction features the generation of the alkyl radicals from phenyliodine(III) dicarboxylates via an organocatalytic process, the use of phenyliodine(III) dicarboxylates as the source of the alkyl radicals and oxidants for the generation of N-oxyl radicals, and the first generation of the β-enaminyl radicals via a HAT process and their use as single-electron donors.

Abstract
An electrochemical process of free-radical difunctionalization of vinyl arenes with N-hydroxyphthalimide resulting in vicinal dioxyphthalimides was discovered. The reaction proceeds with the use of pyridinium perchlorate and pyridine as a supporting electrolyte and a base, respectively. The present approach involves the anodic generation of stabilized phthalimide-N-oxyl (PINO) radical, which adds to the carbon-carbon double bond of vinyl arenes and recombines with the subsequently formed benzylic radical. A wide range of dioxyphthalimides were obtained in yields up to 81%.

Abstract
A copper-catalyzed one-pot amine-alkylation of quinones with amines and alkanes in the presence of di-tert-butyl peroxide (DTBP) was developed via a radical reaction process. Various alkanes and aromatic or aliphatic amines with diverse structures and electronic properties are suitable substrates, and the chirality of amines can be maintained for the transformation. This method has high step and atom economy for straightforward access to aminated and alkylated quinones from readily available starting materials.

Abstract
For the convenient introduction of simple linear/branched alkyl groups into biologically important azaspirocyclohexadienones, a practical Fe-catalyzed decarbonylative cascade spiro-cyclization of N-aryl cinnamamides with aliphatic aldehydes to provide alkylated 1-azaspiro-cyclohexadienones was developed. Aliphatic aldehydes were oxidative decarbonylated into primary, secondary and tertiary alkyl radicals conveniently and allows for the subsequent cascade construction of dual C(sp3)-C(sp3) and C=O bonds via radical addition, spirocyclization and oxidation sequence.

Abstract
Cross-dehydrogenative C-O coupling of N-hydroxyimides with ketones, esters, and carboxylic acids was achieved employing the di-tert-butyl peroxide as a source of free radicals and a dehydrogenating agent. The proposed method is experimentally simple and demonstrates the outstanding efficiency for the challenging CH substrates, such as unactivated esters and carboxylic acids. It was shown that N-hydroxyphthalimide drastically affects the oxidative properties of t-BuOOt-Bu by intercepting the t-BuO• radicals with the formation of phthalimide-N-oxyl radicals, a species responsible for both hydrogen atom abstraction from the CH reagent and the selective formation of the C-O coupling product by selective radical cross-recombination. The practical applicability of the developed method was exemplified by the single-stage synthesis of commercial reagent (known as Baran aminating reagent precursor) from isobutyric acid and N-hydroxysuccinimide, whereas in the standard synthetic approach, four stages are necessary.

Abstract
Previously, we described alkoxyamines bearing a pyridine ring as new pro-drugs with low molecular weights and theranostic activity. Upon chemical stimulus, alkoxyamines undergo homolysis and release free radicals, which can, reportedly, enhance magnetic resonance imaging and trigger cancer cell death. In the present study, we describe the synthesis and the anti-cancer activity of sixteen novel alkoxyamines that contain an imidazole ring. Activation of the homolysis was conducted by protonation and/or methylation. These new molecules displayed cytotoxic activities towards human glioblastoma cell lines, including the U251-MG cells that are highly resistant to the conventional chemotherapeutic agent Temozolomide. We further showed that the biological activities of the alkoxyamines were not only related to their half-life times of homolysis. We lastly identified the alkoxyamine (RS/SR)-4a, with both a high antitumour activity and favourable logD7.4 and pKa values, which make it a robust candidate for blood-brain barrier penetrating therapeutics against brain neoplasia.

Abstract
The iodo-oxyimidation of styrenes with the N-hydroxyimide/I2/hypervalent iodine oxidant system was proposed. Among the examined hypervalent iodine oxidants (PIDA, PIFA, IBX, DMP) PhI(OAc)2 proved to be the most effective; yields of iodo-oxyimides are 34-91%. A plausible reaction pathway includes the addition of an imide-N-oxyl radical to the double C=C bond and trapping of the resultant benzylic radical by iodine. It was shown that the iodine atom in the prepared iodo-oxyimides can be substituted by various nucleophiles.

Abstract
Iron out the difference. Carboazidation of alkenes using cycloalkanes, CH2Cl2, CHCl3 and CCl4 as alkylating reagents proceeded smoothly in the presence of TMSN3, DTBP and a catalytic amount of Fe(acac)3 to afford chain extended alkyl azides and γ-azido chloroalkanes in good to high yields.
